Photo Art Blends | Lesson 9 Lesson 9: Using Word Art If you want to make a poster, greeting card, desktop wallpaper, or just something pretty with your photography, you can simply add a piece of beautiful, one-of-a-kind word art. We’re going to go through 3 different techniques that will help you alter the word art from the class kit to complement your imagery • • • • • • • •

Open Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop. Select File > Open and select a photo from your system to add word art to. Select File > Open. Browse your system for the class kit and select a piece of Word Art. Click and drag the word art onto the photo using the move tool. Size and position as needed. You can finish here and skip ahead to step 9, or you can follow some of the following techniques to achieve a different look with the word art. Change the color of the word art to better match your photo or to stand out better. Select Enhance > Adjust Color > Adjust Hue/Saturation (Photoshop: Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation). To turn the color white so it will stand out against a dark background, move the Lightness slider all the way to the right. Slide it all the way to the left to turn it black. To change the color, adjust the Hue slider left to make it more red or purple, or right to make it more green or blue. You can change how dull or bright the color is by adjusting the Saturation slider. Then move the Lightness slider right to lighten the color and left to darken it. Experiment with all 3 sliders until you find the perfect color.

Use blend modes to incorporate the word art into the photo • Set the blend mode of the word art to any blend mode you choose. (Look at our Blend Mode Basics lesson to learn more about blending). Experiment to find the look you want for your photo. Here we went with “Linear Dodge (Add).” • Try duplicating the layer for a bit more pop (decrease the opacity if necessary). • Combine a color change with a blend mode. Follow step 6c, then step 7a for a look that will give your piece of art a really unique touch! For this example, we turned the color of the word art to a bright yellow (seen in step 6c) then set the blend mode to “Overlay” at 100% opacity.

• Save in .psd format to retain layers and allow for future editing. • Save as high quality .jpg to upload to preferred print vendor for printing. See Printing Tips for print vendor suggestions and other printing advice. Here’s another sample of Word Art, along with the Layers Panel.

And don’t forget the word art is fitting for your digital layouts, too! Here is one re-colored and made mini.
