UC Riverside (0-0) at No. 25 Stanford (0-0) - Feb. 22, ~ 3:00 pm PT TBD vs. TBD TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST One year after finishing the season with the 10th most difficult schedule in the nation, the Highlanders have done it again entering the 2009 season with the 14th strongest schedule in the country as ranked by www.boydsworld.com. The 2009 UCR Baseball schedule features 13 games against teams ranked in Baseball America’s preseason Top-25 poll released in January including eight at the Riverside Sports Complex. No. 5 Cal State Fullerton comes to Riverside from March 27-29 for a three-game Big West series to start conference play, and No. 9 UC Irvine heads up I-91 for a three-game set from April 17-19. The Highlanders play single-game, home-and-home series with No. 11 San Diego (at UCR on March 31) and No. 12 UCLA (at UCR on April 21), while facing No. 15 Stanford on the road in a February 22 doubleheader and taking on No. 25 Oregon State at the Palm Springs Baseball Invitational on March 7. EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICAN Baseball America released its 2009 Preseason All-America Teams on Monday, February 16, and Highlanders relief pitcher Joseph Kelly was honored with a Third Team selection. The Preseason All-America Teams are voted on by Major League Baseball scouting directors. Kelly enters his junior season with UC Riverside tapped as the team’s primary closer for the third straight year. His 12 career saves rank fourth on the Highlanders’ list, and the Corona, CA native has a 5-1 record in 39 career appearances. As a freshman, Kelly appeared in 22 games, posting a 1.32 earned run average with six saves earning Freshman All-American honors in the process from both Collegiate Baseball and Ping!. Rivals.com named him to its All-America Second Team, and the Big West named him Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year. . . . continued

2009 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 8, No. 1
DOUG SMITH UC Riverside Head Baseball Coach Doug Smith was appointed as the fourth head baseball coach in UC Riverside history in September of 2004, following 25 years as the top assistant and hitting coach at his alma mater. Entering his fifth season, Smith has raised expectations after winning the schools first ever Big West Conference title and earning a trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2007. After finishing the season with a program best 16-5 in conference, Smith was awarded Big West Coach of the Year honors. In his first season at the helm, UCR posted a 28-27 record, the program’s fourth consecutive winning season. The team improved upon that record the next year, going 29-25. In 2008, the Highlanders finished the season with their third straight 20-pluswin campaign against the 10th strongest schedule in the country according to the Collegiate Baseball Website Boyd’s World. In a collegiate coaching career spanning over 1,500 games, Smith has helped the Highlanders to 10 postseason appearances, including one Division II National Championship, one Big West Conference Title, and two NCAA Division I West Regional appearances. As the Highlanders’ hitting coach, Smith has seen his teams set nearly every significant offensive school record. In addition, the 2003 Highlanders led the Big West in batting average and homers and had the fourth highest team batting average in Division I. In his career, Smith has coached over 150 all-conference selections and 34 AllAmerica selections. During that time, nearly 100 of his players have been signed to professional contracts including 2007 Oakland A’s first round pick, James Simmons. Smith graduated from UC Riverside in 1975 with degrees in sociology and political science. An outstanding catcher, his senior year was highlighted by his performance in the All-Riverside Baseball Invitational Tournament, where he helped the Highlanders to their first-ever title and was the leading hitter at .471. Following the season he was named All-CCAA First Team. Smith served as a part-time assistant coach from 1976 through 1980 while he pursued a master’s degree in physical education from Cal Poly Pomona. After taking three years off to venture into private business, Smith returned to the Highlanders in 1983 and has been on the staff ever since. In 1989 Smith led the Kenai Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Summer Baseball League to a third-place finish at the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita, KS. Smith is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and enjoys playing golf in his free time. He and his wife, Ruthan, reside in Riverside with their daughters, Traci and Kelly.
