STREAKLESS STREAK SNAPPED The Highlanders streak of not having a losing streak this season ended on March 29 when Cal State Fullerton beat them for the second straight game. Their second two-game losing streak of the year came on April 3-4 in losses at Long Beach State. SLUMBERING LUMBER UC Riverside’s bats have gone silent in conference play thus far this season as the team is hitting just .187/.214/.238 (avg/obp/slg) through its first six Big West games. PAUL BARGAS, BASEBALL COP On paper, Highlanders starting pitcher Paul Bargas was perhaps one of the least likely candidates to hold the No. 1 team in the country to just one run over eightplus inning. Afterall, he entered UCR’s March 27 meeting against top-ranked Cal State Fullerton with 4.32 earned run average, and a year ago lasted just 2.2 innings against the Titans allowing 7 earned runs over that time in a 12-1 UCR loss. However, shut down the Titans he did, scattering nine hits over those eight innings and giving up just one first-inning run in the Highlanders’ 3-1 win over Fullerton. That performance earned him Big West Pitcher of the Week honors on March 30.

DIMAGGIO, HARVEY, MURPHY REST EASY Highlanders rightfielder Tony Nix had his 17-game hitting streak ended on Friday, March 27 against Cal State Fullerton. Ryan Harvey established the Highlanders’ Division-I era record hitting safely in 20 straight in 2003, while Ty Murphy set the alltime UCR hitting-streak record with 28 in 1988. SIX PACK RUNS DRY Oregon State put an end to the Highlanders six-game winning streak March 7 with a 5-1 win. It was the longest streak for UCR since the 2007 season when they put together two seven-game winning streaks late in the year - April 22 - May 4, and May 6-20. The only thing preventing those two seven gamers from becoming one 15-game streak was a 5-3 loss vs. Pacific on May 5. The longest winning streak in the Division I history of the program is nine games from March 12-28, 2004. EATING GOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD Paul Applebee has five wins in his first eight starts so far this season. Last year, the left-hander posted just three wins for the entire campaign. To start the 2009 season, Applebee threw a complete-game, four-hitter at Cal striking out eight and picking up the 5-2 win in the process. His third outing of the year was even better as he threw a complete-game three-hit shutout against No. 23 Oklahoma State. NFL CAREER RECEPTIONS LEADERS The Highlanders baseball team now has 1,204 wins in the history of the program. That puts them ahead of Marvin Harrison (1,102) on the NFL’s career receptions leaderboard, but still quite a ways away from all-time leader Jerry Rice (1,549). MULTIPLICATION TABLES Senior outfielder Carl Uhl has 13 multi-hit games on the year for the Highlanders. He still has a way to go to best last year’s leader in that category, Drew Garcia, who had 26 multi-hit games. FIRING BLANKS Freshman Matt Andriese threw a complete-game three-hit shutout on Friday, March 6 against Gonzaga at the Palm Springs Invitational. It was the first completegame shutout for the Highlanders since Marc Rzepczynski picked up a 3-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on April 28, 2007. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE Tony Nix has 13 doubles through the team’s first 29 games this season. Nobody on last year’s squad had more than 14. UCR’s Division I-era record is 25 set by Adam Seuss in 2002, and the all-time mark is 28 by Jeff Stevens in 1999.

2009 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 8, No. 9.1
DOUG SMITH UC Riverside Head Baseball Coach Doug Smith was appointed as the fourth head baseball coach in UC Riverside history in September of 2004, following 25 years as the top assistant and hitting coach at his alma mater. Entering his fifth season, Smith has raised expectations after winning the schools first ever Big West Conference title and earning a trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2007. After finishing the season with a program best 16-5 in conference, Smith was awarded Big West Coach of the Year honors. In his first season at the helm, UCR posted a 28-27 record, the program’s fourth consecutive winning season. The team improved upon that record the next year, going 29-25. In 2008, the Highlanders finished the season with their third straight 20-plus-win campaign against the 10th strongest schedule in the country according to the Collegiate Baseball Website Boyd’s World. In a collegiate coaching career spanning over 1,500 games, Smith has helped the Highlanders to 10 postseason appearances, including one Division II National Championship, one Big West Conference Title, and two NCAA Division I West Regional appearances.
As the Highlanders’ hitting coach, Smith has seen his teams set nearly every significant offensive school record. In addition, the 2003 Highlanders led the Big West in batting average and homers and had the fourth highest team batting average in Division I. In his career, Smith has coached over 150 allconference selections and 34 All-America selections. During that time, nearly 100 of his players have been signed to professional contracts including 2007 Oakland A’s first round pick, James Simmons. Smith graduated from UC Riverside in 1975 with degrees in sociology and political science. An outstanding catcher, his senior year was highlighted by his performance in the All-Riverside Baseball Invitational Tournament, where he helped the Highlanders to their first-ever title and was the leading hitter at .471. Following the season he was named AllCCAA First Team. Smith served as a part-time assistant coach from 1976 through 1980 while he pursued a master’s degree in physical education from Cal Poly Pomona. After taking three years off to venture into private business, Smith returned to the Highlanders in 1983 and has been on the staff ever since. In 1989 Smith led the Kenai Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Summer Baseball League to a third-place finish at the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita, KS. Smith is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and enjoys playing golf in his free time. He and his wife, Ruthan, reside in Riverside with their daughters, Traci and Kelly.
SAVING DURING DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIMES The current economic downturn has many financial advisors in this country urging their clients to save more. Highlanders closer Joseph Kelly is taking that advice to heart as he has six saves already this season. He had six saves in each of his first two campaigns for UCR, and his 18 career saves are tied for the second most on the Highlanders’ career charts.
WHATEVER RYAN WANTS, RYAN GOETZ UC Riverside junior Ryan Goetz picked up his second career Big West Conference Player of the Week Award on March 2 following a five-game performance that saw him hit .389 with five runs scored and seven RBIs in the Highlanders 4-1 week. On Wednesday, UCR traveled to No. 10 UCLA, and Goetz banged out two hits in three at bats, scoring three runs and driving in a pair in an 11-1 win. Against San Francisco on Friday evening, Goetz went three for six with a run scored and two ribbies while stealing his second base of the year in the Highlanders’ 5-4 come-from-behind 13-inning win over the Dons. He followed that up with a one for three day in Saturday’s 8-2 win over San Francisco, and in Sunday’s finale against the Dons, Goetz turned on a 1-0 offering in the first crushing his first home run of the year to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead in a game they would go on to win, 7-4. For the week, Goetz posted an OBP of .500 and a .611 slugging percentage - all tops on the team.

2009 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 8, No. 9.1 PATIENCE GRASSHOPPER The Highlanders have drawn 107 walks this season while the opposition has worked 68 free passes from UCR pitchers. In conference play, however, that ratio is reveresed as the Highlanders have drawn just seven walks compared to 15 for the oppotision. MEN OF STEAL UC Riverside is stealing bases at a 79.0-percent clip this season and were successful on 13 consecutive attempts earlier in the year. RBI VIGILANTES Michael Hur and Ryan Goetz each have 23 RBIs in the team’s first 29 games. UC Riverside has never had a regular average an RBI per game in a season since the team made the transition to Division I. Drew Garcia came close a year ago driving in 51 in 54 games. THE KING AND I Senior outfielder Carl Uhl has 29 runs scored in UCR’s first 29 games of the season. In each of the past two years, Uhl has averaged more than a run scored per game (54 runs in 53 games in 2008 and 60 runs in 57 games in 2007.). EIGHT ISN’T ENOUGH During the 2008 season, the Highlanders managed to win just eight games away from the friendly confines of the Riverside Sports Complex in compiling an 8-21 road record. They already have 11 wins away from the RSC this season in 17 tries. MEDIC!!! UCR was the benefactor of four hit batsmen in the second inning of their 11-1 win over No. 10 UCLA on February 25. The NCAA record for hit batsmen in an inning is six by Hawaii vs Hawaii Hilo on Feb. 8, 1998. BONUS BASEBALL The Highlanders and CSUB Roadrunners played 15 innings on April 11 in a 9-7 UCR loss. It was the longest game for UCR since a 16-inning affair on
March 28, 2008 at No. 21 Cal State Fullerton that saw the Highlanders come up on the short end of a 7-6 decision. The last time UC Riverside won a game of 13 or more innings was on March 26, 2004 in a 6-4 victory in 13 innings at Hawaii-Hilo. MICHAEL HUR - A TALE OF THE TAPE Junior Michael Hur saw action in 11 games for the Highlanders during his freshman year of 2007 before attending Riverside Community College during the 2008 season. Now back in UCR blue and gold, the junior made his triumphant return by going 4 for 8 in his first three games with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. SCORING DROUGHT The Highlanders 7-0 loss to San Francisco on Feb. 26 marked the first time the team has been shut out since a 5-0 loss to No. 10 UC Irvine on May 25, 2007 - a span of 63 games. THESE GO TO 11 The Highlanders scored 11 runs against No. 10 UCLA on Feb. 25. The 2008 squad matched or bettered that mark on just two occasions - vs. UNLV on May 13 (12 runs) and at Pacific on May 3 (19 runs). It is the most runs the Highlanders have scored against a Top-25 opponent since the 2006 team plated 11 against No. 19 San Diego on April 18, 2006. EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICAN Baseball America released its 2009 Preseason All-America Teams on Monday, February 16, and Highlanders relief pitcher Joseph Kelly was honored with a Third Team selection. The Preseason AllAmerica Teams are voted on by Major League Baseball scouting directors. Kelly enters his junior season with UC Riverside tapped as the team’s primary closer for the third straight year. His 12 career saves entering the season rank fourth on the Highlanders’ list, and the Corona, CA native has a 5-1 record in 39 career appearances. As a freshman, Kelly appeared in 22 games, posting a 1.32 earned run average with six saves earning Freshman All-American honors in the process from both Collegiate Baseball and Ping!. Rivals.com named him to its All-America Second Team, and the Big West named him Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year.

2009 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 8, No. 9.1
RANDOM BITS OF INFORMATION affectionately stolen from www.boydsworld.com, so go support Boyd by visiting his website EXPECTED RUNS TABLES for NCAA Division I The tables below were created from analysis of playby-play data for roughly 93% of all D1 games from 2005 to 2008. The first table represents the average runs scored after the given situation occurred. Outs Empty 1st 2nd 1st and 2nd 3rd 1st and 3rd 2nd and 3rd Loaded
0 0.63 1.10 1.39 1.83 1.62 2.07 2.32 2.70
1 0.32 0.65 0.84 1.16 1.08 1.40 1.59 1.88
2 0.11 0.28 0.39 0.57 0.44 0.65 0.73 0.98
Quantifying team defense is a bit easier, however, and Defensive Efficiency is one of the more useful ways to measure it. Defensive Efficiency is just the percentage of balls put into play (no strikeouts and home runs those are on the pitcher) that a defense turns into outs.
The second table presents the percentage of the time that a team will score at least one run from a given situation. Outs Empty 1st 2nd 1st and 2nd 3rd 1st and 3rd 2nd and 3rd Loaded
0 32% 52% 69% 72% 85% 89% 90% 90%
1 18% 34% 48% 51% 70% 71% 75% 74%
From 2005-2008, the Riverside Sports Complex played as a very slight hitter’s park. Below are the 2005-08 Park Factors for all Big West Conference Teams. A Park Factor of 100 represents an average park in terms of runs scoring. A number greater than 100 benefits the offense, and a number smaller than 100 benefits the defense. 105 104 102 100
UC Irvine Cal Poly Pacific Long Beach State UC Davis
In 2007, the Highlanders’ Defensive Efficiency was .671 - 88th in the country. Boyd hasn’t published 2008 figures yet, but last year UCR’s DE dropped to .618. This season, that figure is back up to .690. UCR BOYDSWORLD RANKINGS The UC Riverside Baseball team, off to its secondbest start in the Division I history of the program began entering a number of the national polls and ranking systems in mid to late March. Following the split of the first two-games of their three-game series with top ranked Cal State Fullerton, the Highlanders found themselves in some rarified air on the collegiate baseball website boydsworld.com.
2 07% 17% 27% 30% 31% 36% 35% 42%
PARK FACTORS Park Factors help put baseball statistics into context by identifying the impact a particular stadium has on offense and defense. The outfield dimensions, amount of foul ground territory, weather, etc. can all impact whether a stadium is a “pitcher’s” or “hitter’s” park.
UC Santa Barbara Cal State Fullerton UC Riverside Cal State Northridge
DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY Quantifying individual defensive contributions is as difficult a job as there is when it comes to baseball analysis. If you don’t believe us, do a quick google search for “Derek Jeter Defense” to view the wide range of opinions about the Yankees’ multiple GoldGlove award winner.

Boyd Nation, the owner and operator of the website, ranks teams using what he refers to as a “PseudoRPI” which closely matches the official RPI (Ratings Power Index) used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee at the end of the season. On March 28, UC Riverside ranked 14th in the nation using this metric - the highest ranking ever for the program. Prior to this season, the highest the Highlanders ranked in the Pseudo-RPI was 36th back during the 2003 season. The boydsworld.com website also tracks a team’s Iterative Strength Rating (ISR) “designed to measure the quality of a team’s season to date by combining their winning percentage with the difficulty of their schedule.” On March 29, the Highlanders were second in the country behind Cal State Fullerton in this measure. The program’s previous ISR high-water mark was ninth back in April of 2003. The Big West is ranked fourth in the nation in Conference Pseudo-RPI rankings and second in ISR.
