INEE Global Meet-up Feedback Report I provide a short description of our meet-up event (including type of location, number of attendees, time and date, etc.). ° The meet up event in the rural territory of Mwenga, Kitutu district took place from 12 to 4 pm on 29 October, 2011. 51 persons were invited but only 40 attended among whom 5 women. The attendees were mainly primary and secondary school teachers, members from parents’ committees and 2 inspectors from the local teaching division. The moderator, Jack BANTU (an education supervisor) described INEE going through the minimum standards of education, concepts which were totally new to the attendees. Going through the standards, the attendees put much emphasis on the role of the government, the local communities and the international community: -

In the maintenance of school buildings that attract children and make their pride,

- In the increase of strategies to assure the equal access of girls and boys to quality education (Many children still cannot attend neither formal education nor informal, especially in the post conflict reality. The great number of unemployed youth due the lack of training in life skills, fact that restricts such people to participate to the society welfare but who are easily enrolled into armed groups) -

To discourage early marriages by sensitization and other legal procedures,

- To assure equal opportunities in hiring qualified women and girls(practical cases were given where school authorities are reticent to hire women due to their family loads such as domestic chores, they have many days out of schools when pregnant, the delivery period or when a child is sick. As schools don’t have additional staffs to take over in these circumstances, they always get into troubles, -

To assure a continuous teacher retraining though few NGOs act in education and select very schools,

-

To provide teachers with adequate teaching aids so that they can be more practical and precise,

-

To provide schools with income generating activities to cover the gaps the government can’t cover,

On a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest), this how successful our meet-up event was appreciated by participants.

1 is obtained once; 2 is obtained 6 times; 3 is obtained 18 times; 4 is obtained 10 times and 5 is obtained 5 times What went well is:

-

The participants were happy to learn about INEE and the minimum standards,

-

The participants were active in group work and reported the interaction findings,

-

The local inspectors helped the groups discus the standards,

-

The director of Twabenga primary school availed a classroom for the issue free of charge,

-

Some attendees came at thirty kilometers away from Kitutu by foot without any complaint,

What could be improved is the following:

-

The participants should have resources about INEE standards to guide them,

- The community should be sensitized to avail a room appropriate for meetings, not a classroom or INEE has to behave accordingly Attendees should be more prepared to devote time to think deeply of the welfare of education in post conflict areas, the case of Kitutu, - The moderator as well as participants should have INEE visibilities and official documents allowing them to hold the meet-up event, -

Moderators of INEE meet –ups should be trained ‘’capacity building’’

-

Other humanitarian actors such NRC,UNICEF should facilitate with logistic items,

- Many education partners need to be involved in such events, but the information about INEE is limited to those with internet accessibility, - Women and disabled should play an important role in such event to serve as models to the communities

Our recommendations for future INEE Global Meet-ups are: - To have official documents from INEE authorizing to hold the meet up to avoid getting into trouble with local partners when looking for the event setting for free or to avoid being accused of organizing illegal meetings, -

To debate on a common topic given by INEE in time

To have a focal point for the coordination of the event instead of addressing to INEE for any misunderstanding

Some photos available from the Meet-up :(we include some other pictures giving the idea of the areas we work in, but it doesn’t mean all schools look like these, there some viable though very few, others attached.

Sincerely, Jack BANTU RUSAGARAhe Education Supervisor of People In Need & Chairman founder of SOS EDUCATION DR Congo Note that the meetup event was organized just after a teacher capacity building seminar held by People In Need with the cofinance of RESCATE,AECID and Peop
