Northwest Nazarene Natalie Knauf (left) and Kendra Bodine record a block for a point int he Crusaders’ straightset win over Concordia on Saturday. The Crusaders have won 10 in a row and are tied for the GNAC lead.
News:
It proved to be a “Happy Halloween” for the Crusader volleyball team, which stretched its win streak to 10 straight matches, beating visiting Western Oregon in four sets on Thursday at the Johnson Sports Center, and Concordia in straight sets Saturday night. The Northwest Nazarene spikers capped a busy day of Halloween “athletic treats” on the NNU campus as the men’s basketball team put on a show for fans in the morning with their “Red-White” scrimmage, then the NNU women’s basketball team tipped off its exhibition schedule with a 75-43 win over Eastern Oregon. Action then moved outside for “Senior Day” for men’s soccer, which had a tough day in a 2-0 loss to Simon Fraser, capping a week of mixed emotions as the Crusaders posted a 4-2 victory over Western Washington on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Crusader women’s soccer team wrapped up its 2015 campaign on the road, falling 4-0 at 5th-ranked Western Washington, and 1-0 at St. Martin’s. VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders maintained their status as 1-of-4 teams tied for the GNAC lead by topping Western Oregon, 29-27, 23-25, 25-13, 25-15, on Thursday night, then sweeping Concordia, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15, on Saturday. Kendra Bodine and Madi Farrell each had 15 kills against the Wolves, while senior outside hitter Elayna Rice led the defense for the third straight match, recording 17 digs. Linnea Phillips added 14 digs, Jacquelyn Johnson had 11 digs, Bodine added 10 digs for a double-double, and Hailey Cook continued her rock-solid play at setter with 47 assists. Saturday, Rice returned to her ball-pounding ways as she led NNU in kills with a match-high 13, and continued to play great defense, adding in 10 digs. Phillips chipped in 15 digs, Bodine had 11 digs and 9 kills, Madi Farrell had 6 kills

and 8 blocks, and Cook dished out 33 assists and had 8 digs in the win. ON TAP: The Crusaders continue to hold their GNAC title repeat hopes in their own hands as NNU plays two of its fellow first-place foes down the stretch. That includes this weekend, as NNU makes its final road trip, playing at Alaska on Thursday before one of the biggest clashes of the year at No. 11 Alaska Anchorage on Saturday. NNU’s won four straight against the Seawolves, including handing UAA its first loss of the season in 4 sets in Nampa, Idaho, on Oct. 8. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The NNU women looked sharp in their first tune-up for the new season, topping Eastern Oregon, 75-43. The Crusaders shot 45.1 percent from the field, saw all 13 players score, held the Mountaineers to 28.3 percent shooting and forced 36 turnovers. ON TAP: It’s the last chance for fans to get a peak at NNU before a 7-game, 4-week road trip to open the season as the Crusaders host TVCC in a scrimmage on Thursday at 7 pm. MEN’S SOCCER: The week started great for the Crusaders as senior Erik Anderson was named to the CoSIDA District 8 All-Academic Team, making him eligible for Academic All-American honors. Riding that off-field good news, Anderson led the way in a 4-2 win over Western Washington, scoring 1 goal and assisting on 2 others. Julio Castillo did the same (1 goal, 2 assists), while Michael Mollay and Dennis Vivar-Diaz each added a goal in the win. Mollay also had an assist and Jaime Verdin added another assist for the Crusaders. Ryan Foo made 2 saves in the win. Saturday’s outcome proved much different as back-to-back controversial calls led to a penalty kick, stopped by Foo, then a re-do PK which gave Simon Fraser the win. Foo made 7 saves in the disheartening “Senior Day” setback. ON TAP: The Crusaders cap the 2015 regular season at Concordia on Saturday, a team NNU blanked 3-0 in Nampa in September. Then it’s wait and see time as invites to the NCAA Tournament are announced at 4 pm. (MT) on Monday, Nov. 9. WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Crusaders wrapped up the season with a 4-0 loss at 5th-ranked and GNAC regular-season champion Western Washington on Thursday, then a soggy 1-0 setback at rainy St. Martin’s on Saturday. Daniele Ortiz had 7 saves in Thursday’s game and 4 against the Saints, giving her a GNAC best 116 saves on the year, and a 6.82 saves per game average. MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders got in some work Saturday morning with an intra-squad scrimmage, then treated fans to lunch in the Dillabaugh Suite. ON TAP: The NNU men are back in action Tuesday at 4:30 pm, scrimmaging the College of Southern Idaho, then tip off their season next Tuesday, Nov. 10, hosting long-time rival The College of Idaho in an exhibition at 7 pm.
