THIS WEEK: The top-ranked Trojans takes a nine-game winning streak into this weekend’s final home regular-season conference action starting with an important clash against another undefeated MPSF team, No. 3 Stanford, at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 5) followed by a MPSF rematch with No. 5 Pepperdine at noon on Sunday (Nov. 6) at McDonald’s Swim Stadium. ••• RANKINGS: USC (16-1, 3-0 MPSF) is ranked No. 1 in the national rankings for the second straight week. Stanford (15-3, 4-0) is ranked No. 3, and Pepperdine (15-6, 1-2) is No. 5. ••• WEEKEND RECAP: The Trojan Tro s hosted their first MPSF games of the season when No. 8 Long Beach State and No. 7 UC Irvine came to town last week. On Saturday, USC got its second look of the year at the 49ers and managed to take care of business with a 13-9 win over then-No. 8 LBSU. En route to the win, Juraj Zatovic pinned up his second five-goal performance of the year. The next day, the Trojans faced the Anteaters for the third time this season and posted their third win with a tight 5-4 decision. USC goalie Adam Shilling notched 11 saves in the win that was due in large part to another stiff defensive effort from the Trojans. Zatovic again had a multiple-goal game with two goals to lead USC in scoring. ••• STANFORD NOTES: No. 3 Stanford is the only other team besides the Trojans to still stand undefeated in MPSF play. The Cardinal is on a four-game winning streak after posting a 9-8 win over UCLA and a 11-9 win over Pepperdine last weekend. Stanford is led in scoring this season by Peter Varellas and Thomas Hopkins with 40 and 38 goals, respectively. ••• TROJAN-CARDINAL RIVALRY RIV : USC is 32-54 all-time against Stanford after breaking a two-game slump against the Cardinal with the Trojans’ 6-5 win earlier this season the Southern California Tournament championship game. ••• PEPPERDINE NOTES: No. 5 Pepperdine posted a big win last weekend with an 8-6 win over No. 2 California, and then lost 11-9 to Stanford. The Trojans’ only loss of the season came to the Waves in nonconference play on Oct. --more--

2005 University of Southern California Men’s Water Polo 1 when Pepperdine posted a 5-4 victory after a late four-meter penalty shot. The Waves are led in scoring by 2004 Olympian Jesse Smith with 42 goals this season. ••• TROJAN-WAVES RIVALRY RIV : USC is 46-18-1 all-time against Pepperdine, having had its threegame winning streak against the Waves snapped with this seasons’ 5-4 loss. ••• BEST EVER: USC senior Juraj Zatovic chiseled his place in USC men’s water polo history on Oct. 23 when the two-meter defender rifled in five goals against UC Santa Barbara to become the Trojans’ all-time leading scorer. Zatovic needed just two goals to move into a tie with Robert Lynn at the top of the USC charts, but the senior made sure to pass up the mark with a five-goal outburst that pumps up his career total to 193 goals. Zatovic made his mark in the second quarter of the game with his 189th and 190th career goals, while the No. 1 Trojans were working their way well past the host Gauchos on the way to a 10-3 victory in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener. ••• DOUBLING UP: The Trojans’ overall offensive production and defensive control have become glaringly apparent. After running up its winning streak to nine games with last weekend’s wins, USC has maintained its scoring output at more than double its goals allowed, outscoring all opponents 163-81 this season. On the attacking end of the pool, USC is averaging 9.6 goals per game, while allowing a mere 4.8 per game. That offensive number ranks the Trojans No. 9 in the nation and fifth in the conference. Defensively, USC not only leads the MPSF, but also the nation. The Trojan defense had not allowed more than five goals for eight straight games before coming up against UC Irvine in NorCal play on Oct. 15. ••• HOME POOL ADVANTAGE: After battling through regular-season competition, USC will play host to the crucial MPSF tournament (Nov. 25-27), where conference teams will vie for the championship title and an automatic bid into the eight-team NCAA Tournament. All the action is set to go down at McDonald’s Swim Stadium. ••• SPRINT SPECIALIST: Junior utility Pavol Valovic has yet to lose a starting sprint for the Trojans. The speedster has taken the majority of USC’s opening sprints, and has come out ahead on every one. In the SoCal Tournament championship game against Stanford on Sept. 18, Valovic was a perfect 4-for-4 off the lane line. He did the same against Pepperdine, didn’t miss a beat at the Northern California Tournament, and aside from being called for leaving early on a sprint last weekend, Valovic has still outraced all comers.
