MATT LARKINS UC Riverside hurler Matt Larkins struck out 11 batters on Saturday, February 19 against Loyola Marymount becoming just the sixth member of the Highlanders to K that many in the program’s Division I history. He also didn’t issue any walks in the game which the Highlanders won, 3-0. For his efforts, Larkins was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week. Ks 15 15 14 11 11 11 11 11

TREVOR FRANK One day after Matt Larkins struck out 11 members of the LMU Lions, Travor Frank punched out a career-high 10 in his eight-inning, five-hit performance. Unfortunately, the Highlanders offense didn’t deliver on that day, and Frank left with a no-decision in a game UCR eventually lost 2-1. MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH The Highlanders have been on the bubble the past two seasons when the NCAA Tournament came calling finishing 74th in RPI in 2010 and 77th in 2009.

2011 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 10, No. 2.1 GREAT EXPECATIONS The Big West released its 2011 Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll on Tuesday, January 25, and the conference’s nine field generals are predicting that the Highlanders and UC Irvine will battle for second place this season behind last year’s Big West Champions, the Cal State Fullerton Titans. That is the second time Big West coaches predicted a second place finish for UC Riverside, although back in 2007, they didn’t have to share the spot with the Anteaters. GREAT EXPECTATIONS, THE SEQUAL The College Baseball Newspaper poll had the Highlanders ranked 43rd in the nation in the publication’s preseason poll. GREATER EXPECTATIONS Baseball America released its College Top 50 By Class in its late February/early March issue, and they rank UC Riverside first baseman/designated hitter Justin Shults as the 39th best senior in the nation. The Baseball Bible also projected the field of 64 for the 2011 NCAA Tournament, and have the Highlanders receiving a bid to their third-ever Division I-era tourney following a third-place Big West finish.

A WEEK TO REMEMBER Center fielder Tony Nix did his best Babe Ruth impersonation in the second week of May last year, hitting .654 with nine extra base hits, 11 runs scored, 15 RBIs, 33 total bases and a 1.269 slugging percentage, which earned him the Big West Baseball Player of the Week Award as well as the NCBWA Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week Award. On the week, Nix raised his batting average from .266 to .341, doubled his season RBI output from 15 to 30, increased his total bases from 51 to 84, increased his extra base hits from 13 to 22 and increased his slugging percentage from .468 to .622. THREE-BAG BONANZA The Highlanders banged out 23 triples last season breaking the Division I-era record of 19 set by the 2003 squad, and placing them in a tie for seventh in the program’s all-time Top-10. The school record for triples in a season is 45 set in 1979. TRIPLE ROUND TRIPPER Justin Shults connected on three home runs in the UCR’s 18-10 win at UNLV on Apr. 27, 2010 tying the school record and setting the Division I record for most home runs in a game.

2011 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 10, No. 2.1
DOUG SMITH
UC Riverside Head Baseball Coach Doug Smith was appointed as the fourth head baseball coach in UC Riverside history in September 2004, following 25 years as the top assistant and hitting coach at his alma mater. Entering his seventh season, Smith has compiled an overall record of 181149 including a 75-60 mark in Big West competition. That includes UC Riverside’s first Big West Conference Baseball Championship in 2007 and a trip to the NCAA Regionals that same year. After the season, with a program-best conference record of 16-5 in tow, Smith was named Big West Coach of the Year. In a collegiate career spanning over 1,600 games, Smith has helped the Highlanders to 10 postseason appearances, including one Division II National Championship, one Big West Conference Title, and two NCAA Division I West Regional appearances. As the Highlanders’ hitting coach, Smith has seen his teams set nearly every significant offensive school record, including batting average, home runs, runs, RBI and extra base hits. In addition, the 2003 Highlanders led the Big West in batting average and homers and had the fourth highest team batting average in Division I. In his career, Smith has coached over 150 all-conference selections and 34 All-America selections. During that time, nearly 100 of his players have
been signed to professional contracts, and three former Highlanders—Dan Runzler (Giants), Marc Rzepczynski (Blue Jays) and Chris Smith (Brewers)—saw action in the major leagues in 2010 with RUnzler earning a World Series Championship Ring with San Francisco. Smith graduated from UC Riverside in 1975 with bachelor’s degrees in sociology and political science. An outstanding catcher, his senior year was highlighted by his performance in the All-Riverside Baseball Invitational Tournament, where he helped lead the Highlanders to their first-ever title and was the leading hitter at .471. Following the season he was named All-CCAA First Team. Smith served as a part-time assistant coach from 1976 through 1980 while he pursued a master’s degree in Physical Education from Cal Poly Pomona. After taking three years off to venture into private business, Smith returned to the Highlanders in 1983 and has been on the staff ever since. In 1989 Smith led the Kenai Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Summer Baseball League to a third-place finish at the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita, KS. Smith is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and enjoys playing golf in his free time. He and his wife, Ruthan, reside in Riverside with their daughters, Traci and Kelly.
POWER SURGE The Highlanders’ 58 home runs in 2010 are the fifth most in the history of the program and the second most since the transition to Division I. The 1986 squad hit a Highlanders best 72 long balls while the 2003 team set the DI standard with 63. The 2010 team also had a .491 slugging percentage which is the eighth highest in the history of the program and second behind the 2003 team (.501) for tops in the Division I era. The 1997 squad slugged a record .536 for the season.
LICENSE TO DRIVE Shults also shattered the Division I-era mark for total bases in a game at UNLV adding two doubles to his three round-trippers for a total of 16 besting the previous high-water mark of 11 established on two occasions.
POWER SURGE II Tony Nix and Justin Shults both smashed the UCR Division I-era record for slugging percentage in a season which was held by Brian Wahlbrink at .612 in 2003. Nix finished the year at .699 while Shults ended up at .695. The program record for single-season slugging percentage is Jack Clark’s .722 set in 1997. The only other member of the Highlanders to top the .700 mark is Rick Rodriguez who checked in at .712 in the 1982 season
BINARY BASEBALL UC Riverside starter Dustin Emmons threw a complete-game 1-0 shutout at Saint Mary’s on March 27, 2010. It was the first 1-0 win for the Highlanders since James Simmons and Daniel Stange combined on a fivehitter against Santa Clara on February 18, 2006, and just the fourth in the Division I history of the program.
OPS, THERE IT IS. Shults and Nix also both broke the UCR Division I-era mark for highest single-season OPS (on base plus slugging). Ryan Harvey had top billing with a 2003 season that saw him record a .462 obp and a .602 slg% (1.064). Shults finished with a .458 obp and .695 slg%(1,153) while Nix ended the season with a .425 obp and a .699 slg% (1.124).
DOUBLE DIGIT DOH! The Highlanders allowed 11 opponents in 2010 to score in double figures. In 2009, the team allowed the opposition that many runs in a game on just four occasions all year.
HOME COOKING The Highlanders won their first seven home games of the 2010 season which is the longest such season-opening streak since the team made the transition to Division I. The team’s 22-6 mark at the Riverside Sports Complex was the second best of the Division I era behind only the 2003 squad which went 27-4.

2011 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 10, No. 2.1
RANDOM BITS OF INFORMATION
affectionately stolen from www.boydsworld.com, so go support Boyd by visiting his website EXPECTED RUNS TABLES for NCAA Division I The tables below were created from analysis of play-by-play data for roughly 93% of all D1 games from 2005 to 2008. The first table represents the average runs scored after the given situation occurred. Outs Empty 1st 2nd 1st and 2nd 3rd 1st and 3rd 2nd and 3rd Loaded
0 0.63 1.10 1.39 1.83 1.62 2.07 2.32 2.70
1 0.32 0.65 0.84 1.16 1.08 1.40 1.59 1.88
2 0.11 0.28 0.39 0.57 0.44 0.65 0.73 0.98
Quantifying team defense is a bit easier, however, and Defensive Efficiency is one of the more useful ways to measure it. Defensive Efficiency is just the percentage of balls put into play (no strikeouts and home runs - those are on the pitcher) that a defense turns into outs.
The second table presents the percentage of the time that a team will score at least one run from a given situation. Outs Empty 1st 2nd 1st and 2nd 3rd 1st and 3rd 2nd and 3rd Loaded
0 32% 52% 69% 72% 85% 89% 90% 90%
1 18% 34% 48% 51% 70% 71% 75% 74%
2 07% 17% 27% 30% 31% 36% 35% 42%
PARK FACTORS Park Factors help put baseball statistics into context by identifying the impact a particular stadium has on offense and defense. The outfield dimensions, amount of foul ground territory, weather, etc. can all impact whether a stadium is a “pitcher’s” or “hitter’s” park. From 2006-2009, the Riverside Sports Complex played as a very slight hitter’s park. Below are the 2006-09 Park Factors for all Big West Conference Teams. A Park Factor of 100 represents an average park in terms of runs scoring. A number greater than 100 benefits the offense, and a number smaller than 100 benefits the defense. Cal State Northridge UC Riverside Cal State Fullerton UC Santa Barbara UC Irvine

DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY Quantifying individual defensive contributions is as difficult a job as there is when it comes to baseball analysis. If you don’t believe us, do a quick google search for “Derek Jeter Defense” to view the wide range of opinions about the Yankees’ multiple Gold-Glove award winner.

In 2007, the Highlanders’ Defensive Efficiency was .671 - 88th in the country. In 2008 UCR’s DE dropped to .618. Last season, that figure was back up to .673, and in 2010 it was down to .635. UCR BOYDSWORLD RANKINGS Boyd Nation, the owner and operator of the website, ranks teams using what he refers to as a “Pseudo-RPI” which closely matches the official RPI (Ratings Power Index) used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee at the end of the season. On March 28, 2009 UC Riverside ranked 14th in the nation using this metric—the highest ranking ever for the program. Prior to 2009, the highest the Highlanders ranked in the Pseudo-RPI was 36th back during the 2003 season. They finished the 2009 season ranked 77th. Boydsworld.com website also tracks a team’s Iterative Strength Rating (ISR) “designed to measure the quality of a team’s season to date by combining their winning percentage with the difficulty of their schedule.” The Highlanders reached their highest position ever in ISR on March 29, 2009 when they were ranked second in the country behind Cal State Fullerton.
