#4/4

SEPT. 12, 2015 • GERALD J. FORD STADIUM • DALLAS, TEXAS

56 21

DALLAS -- Seth Russell threw for 376 yards with three of his five touchdowns to Jay Lee, and also ran for a score as fourth-ranked Baylor scored a 56-21 victory at SMU. Played its first game for new coach Chad Morris, the Mustangs, who scored only 12 total points their first four games last season including a 45-0 loss at Baylor, had 21 points in the first 1 1-2 quarters. They were still in the game until two impressive TD catches by Lee in the third quarter. Russell hit Corey Coleman for a 42-yard gain on the game’s first play and Baylor got in the end zone on all four of its possessions in the first quarter. With dual-threat quarterback Matt Davis, the Mustangs immediately responded with touchdowns on their first two drives. Davis threw a 46-yard TD to Courtland Sutton on their first offensive play of the season, and they later connected on a 31-yard score. Davis finished 16 of 23 passing for 166 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran 24 times for 115 yards. But with SMU at the 3 and within 28-21, Davis was sacked on the final play of the first half. The Mustangs were out of timeouts and couldn’t get lined back up for another play. DALLAS -- Matt Davis passed for 171 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 125 yards and two more scores on Saturday night to lead SMU past North Texas 31-13. The win was the first victory for first year head coach Chad Morris. Xavier Jones had 94 yards on 13 carries and Courtland Sutton had 65 yards receiving and a touchdown for SMU (1-1). Antoinne Jimmerson’s 25-yard touchdown run capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive that gave North Texas (0-1) a 13-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. Davis connected with Jeremiah Gaines on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 14:15 remaining to give the Mustangs a four-point lead. On the ensuing drive, SMU’s Jonathan Yenga recovered a fumble forced by Andrew McCleneghen and, four plays later, Davis scored on a 50-yard run to make it 24-13. North Texas then went three-and-out and a 14-yard touchdown run by Davis capped an eightplay, 62-yard drive nearly five minutes later. FORT WORTH -- Trevone Boykin threw for 454 yards and five touchdowns and added a scoring run as No. 3 TCU held on for a 56-37 victory over SMU. TCU was up 42-17 when Boykin threw a 31-yard TD pass to Kolby Listenbee on the first series after halftime, but SMU, with its own dual-threat quarterback in Matt Davis, scored the next 20 points before Boykin’s 42-yard scoring strike to Josh Doctson with 6:32 left. Davis, who began his college career as a freshman at Texas A&M, was 18-of-32 passing for 334 yards with a touchdown, and ran 17 times for 62 yards and two scores. Both of Davis’ TD runs came in a 79-second span of the third quarter. He scored on a 4-yarder and added a 1-yard plunge three plays after Horace Richardson intercepted Boykin’s pass. SMU, playing its first road game for new coach Chad Morris, was within 42-34 when Chad Hedlund kicked a 21-yard field goal on the final play of the third quarter. After Green was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the TCU 23 on the ensuing possession, Davis scrambled 19 yards and then threw a 42-yard pass to freshman Cortland Sutton, who made a tremendous catch at the 15 between two defenders called for pass interference. The Mustangs then lost yards on three plays in a row before Hedlund made a 32-yard field goal to make it 42-37.

DALLAS -- Vad Lee found John Miller with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds left to rally James Madison past SMU, 48-45, Saturday night. The Mustangs (1-3) rallied from 10-points down on a pair of Matt Davis touchdowns in the final 4 minutes, but left 2:04 for James Madison (4-0), the top Football Championship Subdivision offense in three categories (scoring offense, total offense and first downs), enough time for the go-ahead rally and Lee led the Dukes 75 yards in 8 plays. Lee hit Deane Cheatham with a 52-yard strike early in the fourth quarter to give James Madison a 41-31 lead, but was picked off by Jordan Wyatt at the SMU 1-yard line. Wyatt returned it 27 yards to give the Mustangs a first down at the 28. Davis drove SMU 72 yards for a touchdown and the Mustangs recovered an on-side kick and drove 52 yards for the lead.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Quinton Flowers rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, helping South Florida defeat SMU 38-14. USF (4-3, 2-1 American Athletic Conference) also matched its victory total for all of last season. SMU fell to 1-6, 0-3 in conference play. With leading rusher Marlon Mack sitting out with a hamstring injury, Flowers broke USF’s single-game rushing record for a quarterback on his first carry of the second half. Matt Grothe ran 146 yards against Connecticut in 2007, and Flowers nearly matched that with 142 on 13 attempts while building a 17-7 halftime lead. The sophomore carried 10 more times in the second half to become the eighth player in USF history to top 200 yards rushing. The Mustangs led 7-3 early on after a Xavier Jones one-yard run in the first quarter. SMU next scoring play came at 7:39 mark of the fourth quarter when Darrel Colbert Jr. connected with Courtland Sutton on a 37-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown pass was the first career TD pass for Colbert Jr. who finished the game 11-of-13 for 120 yards through the air. DALLAS -- D’Angelo Brewer ran for 119 yards and a touchdown and Zack Langer scored on three short runs as Tulsa handed SMU a 40-31 loss on Saturday. Brewer’s touchdown, a 23-yard run, capped a five-play, 75-yard drive 19 seconds before the half to put the Golden Hurricane (4-4, 1-4 American Conference) up after the Mustangs (1-7, 0-4) had taken a 21-16 lead 53 seconds earlier. Matt Davis threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter to put SMU up 14-3. Langer’s first touchdown-and Kerwin Thomas’ 31-yard pick-6- gave Tulsa a 16-14 lead. But SMU regained the lead when running back Xavier Jones hit Xavier Castille for a 39-yard score 1:12 before the half. Langer had a 1-yard TD in the third quarter and after Davis threw his third touchdown pass early in the fourth, Langer finished the scoring on the next drive. Davis was 19 of 39 for 236 yards with Courtland Sutton catching eight for 165 yards and two TDs. DALLAS -- P.J. Walker threw four touchdowns passes and ran for another score, freshman Jager Gardner had a 94-yard scoring run on Temple’s second play and the 23rd-ranked Owls beat SMU, 60-40. Walker’s final touchdown pass was a 75-yarder to Ventell Bryant the first play after Matt Davis pulled the Mustangs to 38-31 on a 30-yard scoring toss to Jeremiah Gaines early in the fourth quarter. Temple went ahead for good at 21-17 when Walker found Romond Deloatch for a 16-yard touchdown strike with 24 seconds left in the first half. SMU was competitive for third time in three games against ranked teams under first-year coach Chad Morris, and made things really interesting with nine quick points to get within 45-40 midway through the fourth quarter. After Temple’s Nick Sharga was called for holding in the end zone on a punt to give the Mustangs a safety, Braeden West returned the subsequent free kick 80 yards for a touchdown, weaving between tacklers before breaking free near midfield. The Mustangs had one chance for a go-ahead score, but linebacker Tyler Matakevich knocked down Davis’ fourth-down pass in SMU territory with 2:41 remaining. Walker followed with a clinching 36-yard touchdown run, and Sean Chandler finished the scoring with a 41-yard interception return in the final minute. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Keenan Reynolds broke the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns, upping his total to 81 with four scores as No. 22/23 Navy beat SMU, 55-14, to remain undefeated in the American Athletic Conference. Reynolds shattered the mark held by Montee Ball, who ran for 77 TDs with Wisconsin from 2009-12. Ball holds the record for total touchdowns with 83. Reynolds scored on runs of 4, 43 and 8 yards on Navy’s first three series and added a 32yard touchdown with 14:19 left to make it 41-14. In a sentimental move, SMU coach Chad Morris started third-string quarterback Garrett Krstich, whose late father was co-captain of the 1969 Navy team. After Krstich completed a pass for no gain on the game’s first play from scrimmage, Morris called a timeout to allow the senior to savor the moment. SMU quarterback Matt Davis ran for a touchdown and threw for a score, but the junior never had a chance of keeping pace with Navy’s prolific triple-option attack. After failing to get into the end zone last week against Memphis, Reynolds got the recordbreaker on Navy’s opening drive with a run up the middle. Before being embraced by his teammates, Reynolds bent down to one knee, lowered his head and pointed skyward. Reynolds ran for two more scores to make it 21-0, and then lofted a pass to a wide-open Jamir Tillman that gave Navy four touchdowns in four possessions. Davis scored on a 1-yard run late in the half, but Navy went up 34-7 when Demond Brown scored on 32-yard run to close out a 78-yard drive. DALLAS -- Xavier Jones ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns, Matt Davis added 156 yards rushing and a score, and SMU beat Tulane, 49-21, on Senior Night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. SMU had a season-high 323 yards on the ground with a season-high six rushing touchdowns. Jones and Davis were also the first multiple 100-yard rushers in a game since 2002 for SMU. Prescott Line and Braeden West added rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for SMU. SMU took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Zach Wood blocked a field goal and R.C. Cox returned it 66 yards for his first-career score. Davis had a 13-yard touchdown on a run later in the quarter and SMU scored 21 straight in the second quarter for a 35-7 halftime lead. Jones had touchdown runs of 1, 5 and 35 yards in the second quarter. Tanner Lee was 9-of-22 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown for Tulane.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Paxton Lynch tied the FBS record with seven touchdown passes in a half, and Memphis set single-season records for yards and points in a 63-0 win over SMU on Saturday. Lynch hit seven different receivers on his scoring passes and finished 9 of 14 for 222 yards -- all in the first half -- as the Tigers raced to a 56-0 lead. His seven passing TDs set an American Conference single-game record, and his 28 passing TDs on the season are best in school history. Lynch’s previous single-game high for TD passes was four. Memphis (9-3, 5-3) had lost three in a row after an 8-0 start. The Tigers gained 6,125 yards and scored 512 points for the season. SMU (2-10, 1-7) struggled to muster any offense, totaling 97 yards and committing five turnovers. The Mustangs lost four fumbles, including two returned by the Tigers for touchdowns.
