Dear Parent/Carer As we come to the end of the first year of Thornaby Academy I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to our summer results and expect to see many further successes for our students. Attendance continues to improve, and beginning in September 2011 we will not authorise holidays taken during term time in a drive to improve this further and also to impact more positively on student progress. Every day counts and we encourage all students to attend at all times. What is your child’s current attendance? If it is 100% - well done! If it is 95% - they have missed the equivalent of 1 day every month If it is 90% - they have missed the equivalent of 1 day every fortnight If it is 80% - they have missed the equivalent of 1 day every week. If this continued throughout their 5 years at the Academy they would have missed one whole year of their secondary education. The start of a new term is a fresh start for your son/daughter so now is the time to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality! The summer term has been a busy one. We have successfully introduced new curriculum pathway’s which have seen all students have the opportunity to walk their pathway, all students began a new timetable in June, year 6 enjoyed a full week transition programme, all students have had further HumanUtopia days and our growing number of Academy Heroes continue to support and inspire the younger students. Vivo Miles has been successfully introduced as an exciting reward system – please encourage your son/daughter to keep collecting these for exciting prizes. We have new staff who have joined us this term: Mr Riley and Mr Gaston have joined us as Learning Mentors to lead work in our Compass Centre, Mr Newham is our new TASC (Thornaby Academy Sports Centre) co-ordinator and Mr Leech is working with the students on Lunchtime activities.
As with every end of year we also say a sad goodbye to those staff who are leaving us. Mr Proctor is retiring following a long service to the education of young people in Thornaby. Ms Dowson and Mr Patrick are also leaving us to pursue new positions in different schools. We all wish them luck, best wishes and happy memories of their time in the Academy. As our last week approaches and I am including some important information about our final days of this term, and the return to school in September. Information about the last week of term: Monday 18th July 6pm – Thornaby’s Got Talent – our own talent show is taken to the public. Thursday 21st July – School closes to students at 1.30pm. Uniform collection: The academy is open for collection of uniform on Wednesday 10th & 17th August from 10am until 3pm. Can I remind all parents/carers that full Academy uniform is essential. Can I ask that all uniform adheres to the uniform policy. Please ensure that shoes are completely black, are not trainers, plimsolls or boots. Socks are also required to be black. I also ask that any piercings over the summer break are removed before returning in September. They will be required to be removed as the academy has a strict no jewellery policy. GCSE Exam results are available on Thursday 25th August 2011 from 10am. The Academy re-opens to all student on Monday 5th September at 8.25am. An updated calendar will be available on the academy website. I wish all of our students a good, safe holiday and look forward to welcoming them back in September. Yours sincerely
