MENTORSHIP OHS has been working in partnership with a local, non-fee government school in Hout Bay since 2012 called Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School. This school primarily serves students from the township Imizamo Yethu. Government schools such as Moravian that serve underprivileged communities are predominantly attended by students of color whose parents were denied access to higher
These schools often suffer from a lack of resources, insufficient teacher training, and high student-to-teacher ratios, all of which contribute to poor academic performance. education under the apartheid system.
The G.I.F.T.E.D. Community Greatness Initiative For Township Educational Development The G.I.F.T.E.D Community is an education initiative designed to empower young people through education. Our model is focused on providing low student-mentor ratios (1-on-1 to 4-on-1) to provide tailored instruction while setting measurable academic goals, and creating an environment where life-long relationship can be built. Mentorship occurs after school Monday-Thursday and is focused on math and English, with extra-curriculars and outings also provided.
CULTURAL IMMERSION OHS partners with local entrepreneurs, artists, activists, historians, and community leaders who share their stories, struggles, successes, and perspective on their work and of their communities. These half-day and full-day opportunities are designed to
We believe that when you engage with the local culture in an immersive and intimate way, walls begin to break down and bridges begin to be built. provide a deeper cultural experience than what one might get as a tourist visiting Cape Town.
Immersion: Community Walk
We believe this is an important first experience so that the volunteers can begin integrating into the community and build an understanding of the context in which the students whom they will be working with live. One of the first immersion opportunities is a guided walk of Imizamo Yethu--the community in which our students live.
Immersion: Slave History Tour
Lucy Campbell offers reflection of and insight into slavery at the Cape

through intimate walking tours of the city, stopping at historical sites and interpreting them through the telling of history and memory. Her interpretation of the Indian Ocean Slave Trade emphasizes the historical representation of slaves, bringing forth suppressed history and memory that are vital towards understanding the current social struggles of Cape Town and much of the world.
