Message From the Chairman It’s been 10 months since SVP Calgary held its launch event in November. As an organization, we have steadily advanced toward our two goals, achieving positive social change in Calgary and providing an entry point for a new wave of local philanthropists. While we’re early in our growth and encouraged about our success, most of our work still lies ahead.

Celebrating our first investments: Pamela Scott, CCSYP; Brad Zumwalt; Lorraine Melchior, CUPS; Tanya Zumwalt.

The Social Venture Partners’ concept is about giving time, money and expertise to non profit organizations. All of the Partners have contributed in each of these ways to make SVP Calgary a reality and the first organization of its kind in Canada. We could not have accomplished this without the support of the existing philanthropic sector in Calgary.

“In ten short months we took SVP Calgary from an idea to an engaged philanthropy reality!”

Since our inception, the organization has accomplished a great deal. We selected our initial funding focus: Children and Education. We drafted a set of Grant Guidelines and mailed and faxed every charity in Calgary we could find. We received over 60 Letters of Inquiry seeking funding from SVP Calgary. Our inaugural Grant Committee spent four months narrowing down the list to the final two charities. We granted a total of $80,000 to our first two Investees. We have two Lead Partners who drafted the work plans and are now coordinating the Volunteer Team efforts with our Investees. In 10 short months, we took SVP Calgary from an idea to an engaged philanthropic reality! Many people helped make this happen. The Partners who believed and invested; the working groups building SVP Calgary, the first Grant Committee led by Lena; the Volunteer Teams led by Terri and Ruth; the staff, Jane & Diane; and the support of the Marigold Foundation, The Calgary Foundation and The United Way. I am thrilled every time a group of Partners come together for any type of meeting. One of the questions the first Grant Committee asked was “Is this lives changed vs. lives served?” In the case of SVP Calgary, I am confident that we are successfully changing the lives of a new wave of Calgarians who want to give back to this great city. Here’s to “lives changed…”

SVP Calgary’s First Investees Calgary Community Support for Young Parents Lead Partner: Ruth Capindale Founded in 1992, Calgary Community Support for Young Parents (CCSYP) enhances the future for children by providing support and education to young families. These families have one or more children under the age of three and are faced with the challenges of poverty, lack of education, single-parent status and/ or social isolation. Believing in early intervention, this not-for-profit is committed to taking a proactive approach to limiting the abuse and neglect of children. Today, the agency offers 36 spaces in its Parenting Consultant Program. With the financial support of Social Venture Partners Calgary, seven more spaces will be added, increasing the capacity of the program by 20 per cent. The need for CCSYP services far exceeds their ability to respond.

Grant Amount: $50,000

CUPS One World Child Development Centre Lead Partner: Terri Adair Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) was founded in 1988 by the downtown churches to serve the socially and economically marginalized people who were turning to them for assistance. Services include an interdisciplinary health care clinic, outreach program that includes a housing worker, family resource centre, referral services and basic need supports. The One World, Child Development Centre will be a comprehensive licensed day care, nursery and kindergarten facility for children of parents who live in poverty and are often homeless. The Centre will welcome the participation of parents in a family-centered approach. The Centre will also offer a prenatal program to mothers to promote the development of healthy infants that can reach their potential through One World.

Quotes from 2000 — 2001 “I have just received your letter regarding Social Venture Partners Calgary. What a wonderful organization. This is definitely the granting process of the future. More in depth investment in the organization and dedicated giving. Partnerships being the key word. Congratulations on such an innovative creation!” “I’m very pleased with the two grant recipients. The grant committee did an awesome job. I need to contact Ruth/Diane to let them know that I want to be on the volunteer team for the Calgary Community Support for Young Parents.” “I think everyone has a good understanding of the process and some appreciation of how difficult it is to award the grants.” “SVP’s grant making process is most impressive—by far the most thorough we have seen. It is so refreshing to meet with donors face-to-face and to talk with them on-site about our programs and services. We appreciate the opportunity to share our experiences with SVP.” “I view your education strategy in particular, as likely having the greatest capacity building potential in Calgary. Educated donors will ensure that the funding relationship is results based and meaningful. I have a strong sense that a new spirit of community was born on Friday, June 15, 2001. Success breeds success and I’m looking forward to hearing great things in years ahead!” “… all I can say is that I wish I were a Partner. What golden opportunities for volunteering and involvement.”
