Creighton never trailed in a 79-44 win over San Diego to open the 2003-04 season and the $291 million Qwest Center OMAHA™. Creighton opened up an early 13-2 lead and used separate runs of 9-0, 8-0 and 10-0 to build a 33-8 lead with 3:20 left in the opening half to put the Toreros away for good. Kellen Miliner and Johnny Mathies each scored 13 points, while Brody Deren snared a career-best 12 rebounds. A record home crowd of 12,255, including more than 80 former Bluejay basketball alumni, were on hand to witness the first game at Omaha’s new arena.

Creighton built an early 19-4 lead and never trailed while beating St. Bonaventure, 83-63. Creighton held All-American guard Marques Green scoreless in the first half while building a 41-18 halftime lead. The Bonnies went on a 20-6 run in the opening five minutes of the second half to close within nine points, only to see the Bluejays gradually pull away for the win. Brody Deren paced five Bluejays in double-figures with 18 points and eight rebounds. Creighton shot 53.7 percent for the game and outrebounded St. Bonaventure 41-26 on the glass. Ahmad Smith led the Bonnies with 16 points. Green finished with just nine points, snapping a streak of 32 consecutive games in double-figures.

Creighton used a 19-0 run midway through the first half to pull away for a 69-49 victory over visiting Bethune-Cookman. The win was Creighton’s 20th straight at home, matching the school-record they first set two years ago. Creighton took a 42-21 lead into intermission as they scored 19 points off 13 Bethune turnovers in the opening half. Only a lay-up in the closing seconds prevented the Jays from holding a third straight opponent under 20 first-half points. Brody Deren led all players with 15 points while Nate Funk chipped in with 11. Pape Ba paced BethuneCookman with 12 points.

Nate Funk had a career-high 17 points as Creighton beat Delaware State 77-48 to win its school-record 21st straight home game. The win was also CU’s fourth in a row by at least 20 points, something that hadn’t happened since 1918-19. Creighton forced 16 first-half turnovers and took a 35-19 lead into halftime. After the break, CU led by at least 14 the rest of the way and shot 60.9 percent in the second stanza. In addition to Funk’s 17 points, Mike Grimes added 12 points and a career-best three assists for the victors. Delaware State was paced by 11 points each from Miles Davis and Terrance Hunter.

Creighton won its fifth-straight game over in-state rival Nebraska with a 61-54 victory in front of 15,561 fans at Qwest Center OMAHA™. The crowd was a new Creighton record as well as the largest crowd to ever witness a basketball game in the state of Nebraska. Creighton scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 33-23 lead into intermission. In the second-half, Creighton held the Huskers without a field goal for an eight minute stretch and led by 10 with three minutes left. A late rally by Nebraska got them within three with 18 seconds left, but Nate Funk hit two free throws and Johnny Mathies’ steal and lay-up gave the Jays the 61-54 win. Funk and Brody Deren each scored 13 points to lead the victors, while NU’s Andrew Drevo led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Creighton made its final six field goal attempts, including Nate Funk’s three-pointer at the second-half buzzer, to rally and beat Fresno State 70-62 in overtime. The Bluejays overcame a 52-44 deficit in the final 4:20 to pull out the win. With the Jays down 5451 and 5.1 seconds left in overtime, Tyler McKinney brought the ball upcourt and found an open Funk in the corner, who dribbled once and drained the gametying bucket. In the overtime, Creighton was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, as Brody Deren had three baskets in the extra session. Michael Lindeman led Creighton with 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting, while Mike Grimes tied his career-best with 17 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes. Marcus West led Fresno State with 16 points.

Nate Funk led five players in double-figures as Creighton beat Arkansas-Little Rock, 91-66 on Saturday. The win was CU’s 23rd consecutive home win. Creighton led 44-33 at the half and were never seriously threatened after the break. In addition to 17 from Funk, Brody Deren (14 points, 12 rebounds), Mike Grimes (12), Johnny Mathies (12) and Michael Lindeman (10) also scored in double-figures. UALR was paced by 15 points from Zack Wright.

Joe Dabbert had a career-high 19 points as Creighton improved to 8-0 with a 66-61 win at Wyoming. After taking a 33-23 lead into the half, Creighton extended its lead to 49-28 with 13:30 to play before Wyoming staged a comeback. The Cowboys got within three points on two occasions in the final two minutes but Johnny Mathies and Tyler McKinney drained key free throws down the stretch to secure the win. In addition to 19 from Dabbert, Michael Lindeman had 14 points and Mathies added 12. Alex Dunn had 16 points and nine rebounds for Wyoming.

Michael Lindeman scored all four of his points in the final 76 seconds as Creighton (9-0, 1-0 MVC) rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat SMS (7-5, 0-2 MVC). Creighton improved to 10-0 for the second straight season with a 66-49 road win at Bradley. Brody Deren led four Bluejays in double-figures with 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. The Jays jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never trailed. CU’s defense held BU without a field goal for the first 6:09 and without a two-point basket until 6:32 remained in the half. BU would fight back to tie it at 23 but the Jays regained the lead at 33-28 at the half. Holding a 41-31 lead, CU went on an 11-2 run to put the Braves away. BU was led by 12 points from Marcellus Sommerville.

Johnny Mathies made 1-of-2 free throws with 1.4 seconds left to lift Creighton to a 56-55 road win at Illinois State on Wednesday. The win elevated Creighton to an 11-0 start for the first time since 194243. Creighton won despite trailing 20-19 at the half and 50-38 with 7:25 to play. However, a 12-0 run allowed the Bluejays to tie the game at 50 with 3:47 to play. A Nate Funk three-pointer put CU ahead by three with 56 seconds left. However, ISU guard Trey Guidry answered with a trey to even it up. Mathies held the ball for a final shot but was fouled on his drive to the basket, setting up the winning free throw. Brody Deren led Creighton with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Marcus Arnold had 12 points and 12 rebounds for ISU.

Johnny Mathies scored a career-high 20 points as Creighton remained one of seven unbeaten teams nationally with a 78-67 win over Drake. Despite 15 first-half turnovers, Creighton took a 38-30 lead into the intermission. The Bluejays then steadily built its lead as large as 18 in the second half. In addition to 20 points from Mathies, Kellen Miliner had a careerhigh 16 points off the CU bench, while Mike Grimes and Nate Funk each added 11 points. Drake was led by 12 points from Josh Powell and 10 from Nick Grant. Drake’s 67 points were the most by a CU opponent this season.

Brooks McKowen had a career-high 24 points, including 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range, to lead Northern Iowa past #24 Creighton, 82-73. The win snapped Creighton’s longest winning streak since 1975 and left St. Joseph’s, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Stanford as the nation’s only remaining unbeaten teams. Creighton shot 80 percent in the second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit, rallying to defeat Illinois State 72-63. The game was played in front of 14,313 fans, the largest crowd for a regular-season conference game (among the current league members) in league history and CU’s second-largest home crowd ever. Illinois State led for all but two minutes of the first half and was up 30-27 at the break. CU scored eight straight to open the second half and used a different 8-0 streak to go ahead 45-39. CU would score on eight straight possessions to go ahead 60-48 with five minutes left. Kellen Miliner and Nate Funk each scored 15 points for CU, which shot 59.6 percent in the second half. ISU was led by 16 points off the bench from Trey Guidry.

Brody Deren had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Creighton past Indiana State, 61-44 in Terre Haute. CU outrebounded the Sycamores 39-17 on the glass, including 14 on the offensive end. The Bluejays broke open a close game midway through the first half, using a 12-1 run to take a 28-15 lead. CU was able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way. In addition to 15 from Deren, Nate Funk and Kellen Miliner each scored 11 points. ISU was led by 11 points off the bench from Catrel Green. ISU’s top scorer, David Moss, was held to nine points.

Creighton guards Nate Funk and Kellen Miliner had career highs with 21 and 20 points, respectively, to pace the Bluejays past Evansville, 74-70. The win improved CU to 16-2 for the second straight year. The game featured four ties and seven lead changes in the opening 11 minutes before a Joe Dabbert jumper put the Jays ahead for good, 20-19. With Creighton clinging to a 24-23 lead with 6:00 left in the first half, the Jays unleashed a 16-2 run to close the first half, including three trifectas from Miliner. A Funk threepointer with 49.6 seconds left gave the Jays a 71-65 lead, only to see Evansville come down and get a three-pointer by Lucious Wagner to make it 71-68. After Miliner split two free throws, UE's Burton sank two from the line to cut it to 72-70 with 9.1 seconds left. UE immediately fouled CU point guard Johnny Mathies, and Mathies drained two free throws with 7.2 seconds to play. A desperation three-pointer at the buzzer by Wagner was off the mark as time expired.

Fifth-year seniors Michael Lindeman and Joe Dabbert each scored 12 points to lead Creighton to a 58-47 victory over Northern Iowa. After a 26-26 score that saw UNI own the boards 19-11 at the half, Creighton played more aggressively in the second half. Lindeman and Dabbert scored 10 of CU’s points during a 13-2 run to go ahead 43-33. The Panthers would get no closer than three the rest of the way. Brody Deren added 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals for the victors. UNI was paced by 14 points from Ben Jacobson, while Brooks McKowen was held scoreless.

Darren Brooks had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Southern Illinois past Creighton, 61-60, in front of a national audience on ESPN2. SIU’s victory snapped Creighton’s streak of 28 straight home wins, the nation’s third-longest active streak. Neither team would ever lead by more than five points as the game featured nine ties and 15 lead changes. SIU took the lead for good on a three-point play by Brad Korn with 7:04 left. Down by four with 30 seconds left, Creighton guard Johnny Mathies hit three free throws to make it a one-point game. After Brooks missed a free throw with 15 seconds left, CU brought it up court but Mathies had it knocked away, forcing a timeout with 1.5 seconds left. CU’s alley-oop pass to Nate Funk ended up out-of-bounds as SIU held on for the dramatic win.

Kellen Miliner had a career-high 22 points off the bench to lead Creighton past Bradley, 74-56. For the second time in as many meetings this season against the Braves, Creighton never trailed. CU took a 35-27 lead into intermission but the Braves closed to within 44-42 with 13 minutes left. With CU leading by four with 9:37 to play, the Jays went on a 13-2 spurt while holding BU without a field goal for nearly eight minutes. In addition to 22 from Miliner, Brody Deren added 16 points. BU was led by 12 points from James Gillingham.

Darren Brooks had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals as #16 Southern Illinois won its 15th straight game with a 68-60 win over visiting Creighton. Trailing 8-7 early, SIU used an 11-1 run to take the lead for good. SIU led by as much as 16 in the first half and were up 40-25 at the break. SIU took its largest lead at 42-25 on a jumper by Brooks before CU mounted a rally. The Jays went on a 19-5 run to get within four, but could get no closer than three the rest of the way. Nate Funk had 15 points for Creighton, while Brody Deren had 13 points and 13 rebounds for CU.

SMS jumped to a 13-2 lead and never trailed in a 7046 win over Creighton. The loss was CU’s worst in MVC action since 1995. SMS held CU to 1-for-10 shooting while forcing four turnovers to build that 13-2 advantage. CU would draw within 13-10, but that’d be as close as they’d get all afternoon. SMS led 34-24 at the half thanks to a 16-2 edge in points in the paint. The Jays then scored just two field goals in the first 11:25 of the second half, as SMS used a 22-2 run to go ahead 58-30 with 8:35 to play. Johnny Mathies led CU with 14 points, while SMS freshmen Blake Ahearn (15 points) and Nathan Bilyeu had a dozen for the victors. The loss was CU’s largest since Dec. 19, 2001 and snapped a streak of 83 straight games in which CU owned a lead in.

Creighton’s nation-best quartet of fifth-year seniors combined for 50 points, 28 rebounds, 10 assists and five blocked shots in a 75-61 win over Wichita State on Senior Night in Omaha. The win gave CU 20 wins for an MVC-record-tying sixth straight season. CU’s seniors scored all but three of its first 24 points as the Jays would build a 35-29 halftime lead. In the second half, sophomore guard Nate Funk drained three treys to help bury the Shockers. Mike Grimes had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Creighton, while Michael Lindeman had 15 points, five boards and five assists. Wichita State was led by 18 points in 26 foul-plagued minutes from Jamar Howard.

Southwest Missouri State used a 17-1 run early in the second half to overcome a 32-29 halftime deficit and eliminate Creighton, 84-75, in quarterfinal round action at the MVC Tournament. Nate Funk drained a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give the Bluejays a 32-29 halftime lead. CU led by as much as 38-33 early in the second half before the Bears unleashed their 17-1 spurt, which was keyed by a dunk from Merrill Andrews and later a three-point play from Andrews. Creighton would not get closer than five points the rest of the way. Joe Dabbert and Funk each scored 17 points to lead Creighton, while Andrews and Anthony Shavies each scored 19 points.

Nate Johnson hit a driving lay-up with 12 seconds left to lift Nebraska past Creighton, 71-70, in opening round action of the NIT. The Cornhuskers’ win snapped Creighton’s five-game winning streak in the series. NU closed the first half with a 10-1 spurt and led 36-29 at the break thanks to a 22-9 rebounding edge. Creighton went ahead 51-49 with 11:21 left on a three-pointer by Nate Funk. The Jays remained in the lead, going up by as much as 65-56 with 6:26 left on a three-pointer by Kellen Miliner.
