TCU AND TEXAS TECH RENEW OLD RIVALRY: With the Iron Skillet safely nestled back in its rightful spot in the TCU Heritage Center, the TCU Horned Frogs (2-0) turn their attention west. The Frogs prepare to go on the road for the first time in 2004 when they travel to Lubbock, Texas to renew an old Southwest Conference rivalry as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-1) on Saturday, September 18. The Fox Sports Net camera will be on hand for the 11:30 a.m. contest. The Frogs are off to a 2-0 start this season, defeating Northwestern, 48-45 in double overtime in the season opener in a nationally-televised ESPN2 game, before blanking SMU 44-0 last week in Fort Worth in the 85th renewal for the Iron Skillet. The Red Raiders are 1-1 in the early going, logging a 27-13 win at SMU before falling at New Mexico, 27-24 last Saturday on a lastsecond field goal. This is the final non-conference game of the 2004 season for the Frogs. TCU opens its final Conference USA slate next Saturday when they host USF. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Next season TCU will become the ninth member of the Mountain West Conference. A LITTLE HISTORY: The Frogs own an all-time record of 513-495-57. TCU has fielded a team every year since 1896, with the exception of the 1900 campaign. With a 39-12 record over the last four-plus seasons (2000-04), the Frogs have begun the 21st century in much better fashion than they began the 20th century, when they were 2-18-3 from 1900-1904. In fact, it took the Frogs 10 years (1896-1905) to record 11 victories – they logged 11 wins in 2003 alone! TCU-TEXAS TECH...THE SERIES: The TCU-Texas Tech rivalry dates back to 1926, a 28-16 TCU win, the first of five straight victories for the Horned Frogs. In fact, TCU controlled the series for many of the early years, posting an 18-11 record through 1972. Since then, the tide has swung to the Red Raiders, with Tech winning nine of the last 11 meetings and boasting a 16-4-3 record since 1973 to take a 27-22-3 all-time advantage. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1995. The teams are slated to meet in Fort Worth on September 16, 2006. EXPECT THE BALL TO BE IN THE AIR: It’s early in the season, but Texas Tech and TCU feature the top two passing offenses in the nation. Here’s how they break down in the passing game: Rank Team Att. Head Coach Gary Patterson Now in his fourth season guiding the TCU football program, Gary Patterson, one of the rising stars in the collegiate coaching fraternity, has posted a 29-11 record. Under his guidance, TCU has finished ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1950s. Patterson’s 29-11 record in 40 games as the Horned Frogs’ head coach represents the best record after 40 games of any TCU football coach since the legendary Dutch Meyer was 29-8-3 from 1934 to 1937. After just three-plus seasons, Patterson ranks sixth on TCU’s all-time wins list and is just four wins shy of moving into the top five. The 2003 season marked the Horned Frogs’ sixth consecutive bowl appearance, a school record, and Patterson has been part of all six. In addition, the Frogs have won three conference championships and recorded three bowl victories over the past six years. The Frogs have also notched three of the school’s seven 10-win seasons in the past four years. They had not recorded a 10-win season between 1938 and 2000. In 2003, Patterson led the Frogs to a 10-0 start and climbed to as high as sixth in the BCS rankings, the highest ranking ever for a non-BCS school. After opening the year ranked 25th in the Associated Press poll, the Frogs made a steady climb up the ladder, moving into the top 10 prior to their lone regular season loss at Southern Miss in week 11. The team, which featured first team All-American placekicker Nick Browne and second team All-American defensive end Bo Schobel. finished the season with an 11-2 record and ranked 24th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 25th by the Associated Press. Patterson was recognized for the Frogs’ achievements, as he was finalist for both the Eddie Robinson and Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year honors. He was also selected as an assistant coach for the 2004 Hula Bowl. Named the 30th head coach in TCU history on December 8, 2000, Patterson was one of 17 head coaches at Division I schools who took over a program in 2001 with no previous Division I head coaching experience. Only eight of those 17 coaches, including Patterson, were able to lead their teams to bowl appearances in their first season.

A TCU WIN TODAY WOULD... * Extend its regular season winning streak over non-conference foes to 10. Since losing to Northwestern State on Sept. 22, 2001, the Frogs have defeated SMU (three times), Northwestern (twice), North Texas, Navy, Vanderbilt and Arizona in regular season non-conference play. * Get the Frogs off to a 3-0 start for the second straight year and for just the third time in the last 13 seasons (also 2000). * Mark the Frogs first win over a Big 12 opponent since defeating Iowa State in the 1998 season opener. Since then, the Frogs have lost to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas A&M. FROGS DOMINATE SMU: TCU dominated all facets of the game in routing the SMU Mustangs 44-0 in Fort Worth last Saturday night. The Frogs rolled up 562 yards of offense (the seventh highest total in TCU history), including 397 through the air (the sixth highest total), while limiting the Mustangs to just 170 yards, including six net yards rushing. Brandon Hassell came off the bench to complete 17-of22 passes for 264 yards and two TDs. Wide receiver Reggie Harrell had a career night, logging 10 receptions for 172 yards and a score. The Frogs scored on six-of-seven possessions in the red zone, while SMU invaded the Frogs’ 20-yard line just once. TCU did not turn the ball over, while SMU committed three turnovers. The 44-0 victory, the largest shutout win in the 85-year history of the battle for the Iron Skillet, was TCU’s school record sixth consecutive win over SMU and gave TCU a 40-38-7 series lead. IMPROVING DEFENSE: Many coaches say teams improve the most from week one to week two. To say the TCU defense showed improvement from week one to week two would be a bit of an understatement. Here’s a look at how the Frogs defense fared against Northwestern in the opener and against SMU in game 2: CATEGORY NU SMU Points Allowed 45 0 First Downs Allowed 32 13 Rushing Yards Allowed 124 6 Passing Yards Allowed 513 164 Total Yards Allowed 637 170 Turnovers Forced 1 3 Opp. Time of Possession 34:35 25:15 THE GOOSE EGG: TCU pitched a shutout in the 44-0 blanking of SMU. It was the Frogs first shutout since whitewashing Army last season by a 27-0 count and their second shutout under head coach Gary Patterson. It was the 13th time TCU has blanked SMU in the 85-year series, but it marked the largest shutout victory, topping the 43-0 TCU win in the very first game played between the two schools, back in 1915. VICTORY MARGIN: TCU’s 44-point rout of the Mustangs was its largest victory margin over any opponent since a 62-7 drubbing of SMU on November 24, 2000.
OFFENSE CLICKS EARLY: The Frogs have scored both early and often this season. In each of their two games, TCU have received the opening kickoff and driven 80 yards for a touchdown, taking just six plays against Northwestern and 13 plays against SMU. TCU scored touchdowns on four of its first six possessions against Northwestern and four of its first five possessions against SMU to log 28 first half points in each contest. BIG POINTS: The Frogs have lit up the scoreboard with 92 points in their first two games to rank 10th in the nation in scoring offense at 46.0 points per game. The 92 points after two games is the second most in school history, topped only the 104 points scored to open the 1984 season, a 62-18 win at Utah State, followed by a 42-10 win over Kansas State. TURNING TURNOVERS INTO POINTS: The Frogs did not turn the ball over against SMU, and converted three Mustang turnovers into 20 points. For the season, the Frogs have made their opponents pay for their mistakes, turning all four turnovers into touchdowns. Here’s how the turnover battle shapes up: 2 TCU turnovers have led to 0 Opponent points 4 Opponent turnovers have led to 27 TCU points
NEW FACES: The Frogs have introduced several new faces to their starting lineup this season. Those making their first collegiate start against Northwestern included wide receiver Quentily Harmon, defensive tackles Terence James and Jared Kesler, safety Flander Malone, defensive end Jamison Newby, offensive guard Shane Sims and linebacker Andrew Ward. Linebacker David Hawthorne and cornerback Quincy Butler made their first career starts against SMU. GAME CAPTAINS: The Frogs chose captains for each game during the season. Northwestern: QB Tye Gunn, OT Anthony Alabi, LB Martin Patterson, WS Marvin Godbolt. SMU: OG Zach Bray, TB Lonta Hobbs, DE Ranorris Ray, CB Mark Walker. IN THE POLLS: TCU opened the season ranked 31st in the Associated Press poll and 33rd in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. The Frogs finished the 2003 campaign ranked 24th by the coaches and 25th by the AP. The Frogs have finished the year ranked in back-toback seasons for the first time since the 1950s and have finished ranked among the top 25 three times in the last four years. SMOKIN’ GUNN: Junior Tye Gunn has played well in the season’s first two games after missing much of last season with injury. He had a career game against Northwestern, setting personal single game highs in pass completions (20), attempts (38), yards (368) and touchdown passes (4) and also logged the longest pass of his career, an 82-yard TD strike to Michael DePriest. He followed that up by completing 8of-12 passes for 124 yards in limited time against SMU. For the season Gunn is 28-of-50 for 492 yards and four TDs with just one interception. He owns a 10-game winning streak as a starting quarterback, topped only by legends Sammy Baugh (12) and Davey O’Brien (11) in TCU history. NO HASSELL TO PLAY BRANDON: Senior quarterback Brandon Hassell came into Saturday’s game against SMU and picked up right where he left off a season ago. Hassell completed 17-of-22 passes on the night for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 77.3 percent completion rate tied for fourth on the TCU all-time single game list. Hobbs carried 23 times for 142 yards in the win over Northwestern and added 87 yards on 19 carries against SMU. He has moved into 10th place on the TCU all-time rushing list. SPREADING THE WEALTH: Tye Gunn completed 20 passes to nine different receivers against Northwestern – 15 to wide receivers, three to tailbacks and two to tight ends. Gunn, Brandon Hassell and Jeff Ballard combined to work eight different receivers into the mix against SMU, including the first career reception for Ryan Pearson. HYPING HARRELL: Senior wide receiver Reggie Harrell is off to a great start in quest of his own TCU record of 1,012 receiving yards in a season, set in 2003. After hauling in five passes for 95 yards and a pair of scores in the win over Northwestern, Harrell had the best game of his career when he snared 10 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown against SMU. The 172 receiving yards is the ninth highest single game total in school history. With 267 yards receiving this season, he has climbed to ninth on the TCU career charts with 1,484 receiving yards. Prior to that contest, Godbolt had logged interceptions in six straight contests over three years – Colorado State in 2002, Tulane, Navy, Vanderbilt and Arizona in an injury-shortened 2003 and Northwestern in 2004. He owns a team-leading eight career interceptions. PATTERSON THE PUNISHER: Senior linebacker Martin Patterson is a leader of the defense, both on and off the field. In addition to sharing the team lead with 26 career starts, Patterson leads the team in tackles again this season with 17, including 10 solo stops. He was tops on the squad last year with 103 tackles, including 17 behind the line of scrimmage. TALENT AND EXPERIENCE ON THE OLINE: The TCU offensive line is both talented and experienced. Left tackle Anthony Alabi (26), center Chase Johnson (25), right guard Zach Bray (15) and right tackle Herbert Taylor (15) have combined for 81 starts. Alabi and Johnson are pre-season first team all-conference picks, while Taylor was an all-freshman performer a year ago. Alabi (Lombardi) and Johnson (Lombardi and Rimington) are on preseason watch lists.

The coaches selected offensive tackle Anthony Alabi, center Chase Johnson, running back Robert Merrill, and defensive backs Marvin Godbolt and Mark Walker as first team candidates. In addition, Chase Johnson (Rimington and Lombardi), Anthony Alabi (Lombardi), Mark Walker (Thorpe), Lonta Hobbs (Doak Walker) and John Braziel (Ray Guy) represent TCU on national pre-season watch lists. FROGS POST 11-2 RECORD IN 2003: The TCU Horned Frogs captured the attention of the nation by reeling off 10 wins to open the 2003 season, climbing as high as sixth in the BCS Standings, the highest ranking ever for a nonBCS school. The Frogs won five games by three points and posted seven victories by seven points or less. The Frogs failed to capture the Conference USA title by dropping a 40-28 decision at Southern Miss, then lost a 34-31 decision to Boise State in the inaugural PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl to end the season with an 11-2 record and ranked 24th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 25th in the Associated Press Poll.

COVERING PRACTICE: The TCU Football team normally conducts workouts between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m. Practices are generally open, but media should contact Steve Fink to double check practice times. TV crews and photographers are permitted to shoot the individual drills during practice after receiving clearance from the Athletics Media Relations office. All Friday walk thru practices are closed.
TCU BOWLS INTO HISTORY: The Horned Frogs made their sixth straight bowl appearance following the 2003 season. TCU had never appeared in bowl games in three consecutive seasons prior to the current streak. TCU is one of just 16 Division I programs that has gone to a bowl game in each of the past six seasons. The list includes four teams from the SEC (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee); four from the ACC (Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech); three teams from the Big 12 (Kansas State, Nebraska and Texas); two from the Big Ten (Michigan and Purdue); one from the Pac-10 (Oregon) and CUSA rival Louisville. MEET YOU ANYTIME: After playing on every day of the week except Sunday and Tuesday last year, the Frogs have games scheduled for a Wednesday (Louisville), Thursday (Northwestern), Friday (UAB) and Saturday (seven games) this season. GROUND CONTROL: TCU and New Mexico were the only two schools to rush for more than 200 yards per game in 2003 while giving up less than 100 yards rushing per game. RE-ESTABLISHING THE TRADITION: The Frogs have posted a .500 or better record in six straight seasons. The last time TCU recorded as many as six consecutive winning seasons was during the 1950s when they recorded six straight .500 or better ledgers from 1955-60. TCU has had a winning campaign in eight of the last 10 years after logging just three winning seasons (1971, 1984 and 1991) in the previous 28 campaigns. This is the third stretch of tremendous success in TCU Football history, comparing favorably to the eras of the late 1930s and the late 1950s.
RETURN TO GLORY: After posting just three winning seasons in 13 years from 19851997, including a 1-10 campaign in 1997, the Frogs have turned the corner. TCU has posted a 54-21 record since the start of the 1998 season, including a 23-4 record over the last three years. They have won 23 of 26 games since losing the opener of the 2002 season at Cincinnati in overtime, and two of those three losses have been by just three points (31-28 at East Carolina and 34-31 to Boise State). They have recorded three conference championships and a trio of bowl victories over the last six years. 10-WIN SEASONS: The Frogs have posted back-to-back 10-win seasons and three 10-win campaigns in the last four years. They have recorded 10 or more wins in a season seven times in school history: 1935 (12), 1938 (11), 2003 (11), 1932 (10), 1933 (10), 2000 (10) and 2002 (10). To put that in perspective, the Frogs went from 1974-1980 winning just nine times combined! WINNING WAYS: The 2003 senior class at TCU was one of the most successful classes in school history. From 2000 to 2003, the Frogs recorded 37 wins. That tied for the fourth best four-year win total in school history and the best four-year total since the 1936 seniors won 39 times. The 2004 class currently has 29 victories under its belt.
