2005 Bluejays Bring Home First MVC Title In 2005, the Creighton baseball team took the next step. After a 2004 season that saw CU improve by 15 wins, the 2005 team won Creighton's first-ever Missouri Valley Conference regular season title. A 48-17 overall record helped propel Creighton to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in five years. Creighton’s regular season Valley title marked the first time a private school won an MVC baseball title since former MVC member Tulsa did it in 1974. Creighton's 48 wins were the second-most ever by a Bluejay team and the most since the 1991 College World Series team posted 51 victories. For its accomplishments, CU received a national ranking for the first time since 2000. For the second year in a row, Creighton's head coach Ed Servais was awarded the MVC Coach of the Year. It marks the first time a Valley coach has won the award in each of his first two seasons as a head coach of an MVC school. The Bluejays won both regular season games played at Rosenblatt Stadium against in-state rival and nationallyranked Nebraska. In game one, Matt Daeges notched a bottom of the ninth inning pinch-hit double to give the Jays a dramatic 4-3 victory. An announced crowd of 20,011 - the 10th largest regular season crowd in NCAA college baseball history - witnessed CU win the rubber match of the three-game season series with a 5-3 victory. During conference play, Creighton shot out of the gates by winning its first five and 10 of its first 11 league contests. The Bluejays swept three-game series against Illinois State, Missouri State and Bradley. The Bluejays advanced to the final day of the ConAgra Foods MVC Tournament. Having to beat host Wichita State twice in one day, Creighton received an eighth inning solo home run from Gabe Lapito to secure a 4-3 victory and force a winner take all elimination game. The Bluejays ran out of steam as the Shockers won the tournament title with a 10-3 victory. Despite not winning the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, Creighton was awarded an at-large berth into the Lincoln Regional. One of sixteen regionals in the NCAA Tournament, the Lincoln Regional included Nebraska, North Carolina State, Creighton and Illinois-Chicago. The four teams combined had the most wins and best winning percentage of any regional in the tournament. Creighton disposed of N.C. State on the first day of the NCAA Tournament, 8-3. The next day Nebraska dropped the Jays 10-8, sending CU into the elimination bracket. After beating and eliminating the Wolfpack, 11-9, Creighton had to turn around and face the Cornhuskers that same night. Nebraska got the best of Creighton in the first championship game, ending the Jays season with a 10-2 defeat. A senior-laden team, six of Creighton's regular offensive starters were seniors. Along with Matt Daeges, who started 18 games and saw action in 40, the Bluejay senior class supplied 65 percent of Creighton's offense. The eighth senior on the team was closer Brandon Bird who recorded 11 saves, the third-most ever by a Creighton player.
Bird and Scott Reese became the first relief pitcher tandem to earn first-team all-MVC accolades since 1995 when Wichita State’s Braden Looper and current Creighton pitching coach Travis Wyckoff were first team members. Reese finished the season 12-0 while making all 37 of his appearances out of the bullpen. His 12-0 record marked the first time a Creighton pitcher with 10 or more decisions has gone undefeated. Reese's 37 appearances also set a new single-season record, and the sophomore was named a third-team allAmerican by the National Collegiate Baseball Wr i t e r s Association. Creighton's bullpen finished the season with a 27-3 record and 3.72 ERA. After the first weekend of the season, Bluejay relievers posted a 26-1 record. As a team, Creighton was 330 when leading after seven innings. Tony Roth and Zach Daeges both brought impressive hitting streaks into the season and extended them to 28 and 18 games, respectively. Roth's 28-game mark set a new school record. Daeges led the team in five offensive categories. The junior also became Creighton's first Academic All-American since 2001 when he was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team as a designated hitter. Daeges, Roth and Lapito were also named academic all-district. Daeges and Roth joined Bird and Reese as first-team allMVC selections. Dan Norquist and Brad Dutton were honored on the second team at first base and shortstop, respectively. Dutton set a new school record for most assists in a single season with 234. A year after posting the second-best fielding percentage in NCAA history, Creighton's defense led the country in double plays with 85. CU was also in the top 20 in fielding percentage. The Jays ended the year ranked 28th by Collegiate Baseball and 31st by the NCBWA. Eric Wordekemper was drafted in the 46th round by the New York Yankees, and Roth signed with the Yankees as an undrafted free agent.
