Illinois. Indiana State hosts South Dakota State in its bye week. Salukis vs. Nationally-Ranked Opponents SIU squares off against its third Top-25 opponent when Creighton comes to town this weekend. The Dawgs have played six games on the road against Top-25 opponents this year, and are 4-2 in those contests. SIU opened up its 2006 season with a series win at then-No. 20 Florida Atlantic. The Dawgs’ other series win versus a ranked team came at then-No. 11 Wichita State to start Valley play. CU is ranked 22nd and 27th by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, respectively. The Bluejays are also getting votes in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and USA Today Top-25 Coaches Polls. Six of Seven SIU has posted series wins against six of its last seven Missouri Valley Conference opponents. The Salukis recently saw a streak of six-straight MVC series wins come to an end when they dropped two of three against Bradley on Mar. 31-Apr. 2 in Carbondale. Interestingly enough, the Braves also beat the Salukis in Peoria (Apr. 8-10, 2005) before that stretch began.

2006 SALUKI BASEBALL NOTES ..........................................................PAGE 2
Errors Hurting Dawgs in 2006 SIU has committed a league-high 85 errors in 36 games this season, and ranks last in the MVC with a .940 fielding percentage. The Salukis have been charged with 48 errors on the left side of the infield alone. SIU pitchers have also had a rough time fielding their position, and as a result, committed 11 errors on the year. The next closest Valley team to SIU in errors is Indiana State, who has 63 in 30 games.
While on the Topic SIU has gone nine-straight games and 13 of its last 15 with at least one error at shortstop or third base. The last time the Salukis went without an error at either of those positions was against Tennessee-Martin on Mar. 29. Lairson Misses North Dakota State Series Sophomore Tyler Lairson, who has made 24 starts at shortstop this season, did not play in last weekend’s series against North Dakota State. Lairson, who sat the weekend out with a sore shoulder, had an MRI earlier in the week. His return is undetermined at this time. Defensive Alignment Freshman Scott Elmendorf moved from his traditional spot at third base to make his first career start at shortstop Tuesday against SE Missouri State. Elmendorf, who played shortstop in one other game against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 10, went errorless with two putouts and three assists. He also had a hand in each of the Salukis’ two double plays. Elmendorf (3B, SS), along with Matt Brewer (3B), Tyler Lairson (SS) and Nathan Emrick (SS/3B), have seen time on the left side of the Dawgs’ infield, where each has committed 10 or more errors. Simply Infuego Freshman Scott Elmendorf, who leads the Salukis in hitting and ties for second in the MVC with a .413 average, enters the weekend on a six-game hitting streak. A native of Newburgh, Ind., Elmendorf hit .619 (13-for-21) with 12 runs scored three doubles, seven walks, a stolen base and five RBI during that stretch. Four of his last six outings have also consisted of mutiple-hits, including a career-high 4-for-4 effort against North Dakota State on Apr. 7. In addition, Elmendorf ranked 35th in the nation in batting average in the first set of NCAA Division I statistics released this week. The Pen Does it Again The Saluki bullpen moved to 12-2 on the year after picking up all four wins last week. No Saluki starter made it past 5.2 innings, and as a result, SIU was once again forced to piece things together. Cody Adams, Dusty Baker, Shane Garner and Adam Snyder accounted for the wins, as neither one of the four worked more than two innings. Adams, Baker and Garner combined for six shutout innings en route to their respective wins against North Dakota State, while Snyder allowed one run in three frames to get his fourth win against SE Missouri State. SIU vs. Creighton SIU leads the all-time series against Creighton, 51-43. The Salukis and Bluejays have met 43 times in Carbondale, with SIU holding a 29-14 advantage in those games. The Dawgs, who
dropped a three-game series against the Jays in Omaha a year ago, have won eight of the last 12 meetings. SIU has swept CU just twice (1984, 1998) at Abe Martin Field since 1984. The Dawgs have never been swept by the Jays on their home diamond. Saluki head coach Dan Callahan is 23-18 all-time against the Jays.
Gerrard Faring Well Against the Jays SIU’s top power threat, Grant Gerrard, is hitting .429 (3-for-7) with three runs scored, one double, three walks and one RBI lifetime against Creighton. Gerrard started last year’s series strong by hitting a RBI-double as part of a three-run first inning for the Dawgs. However, shortly after crossing the plate, he re-aggravated an ankle injury on CU’s astroturf and was forced to leave the game. Despite the injury, Gerrard returned to the lineup as designated hitter for the remainder of the series. The very next week following last year’s series against CU, it was announced Gerrard would miss the remainder of the 2005 season due to a broken wrist in a shocking turn of events. Did You Know? Matt Brewer is the only Saluki on this year’s team to have hit a home run against the Bluejays? Brewer has hit two homers vs. CU. Also, Ryan Welch is the only Saluki pitcher to have beaten the Jays on this year’s squad. Welch started against CU on Mar. 30, 2002, and at the time, moved to 2-1, after striking out two and giving up four hits in six innings. Norrick Gets the Ball Saturday Senior Tyler Norrick made his first series-opening start since Feb. 23 last Friday against North Dakota State, but that outing was limited to four innings after the game was suspended due to rain and thunderstorms in the area. Norrick will get the ball in game two of this weekend’s series against Creighton. By design, the power left-hander pitched one inning started against SE Missouri State Tuesday, but only pitched one inning, where did not allow a run, posted a strikeout and walked one. Norrick is 0-1 with two saves in five appearances against CU. His only career start against the Jays came in Omaha on Apr. 1, 2005. He struck out six, issued two walks, scattered eight hits and allowed five runs in 5.1 innings en route to his first loss of the 2005 campaign. At the time, that start was Norrick’s fourth-straight as SIU’s Friday starter. Key to the Offense SIU is 15-4 when getting 10 or more hits and 13-3 when outhitting its opponents. The Salukis started the season by collecting 10 or more hits in nine of their first 10 games, and hit .341 after that surge. Since then, SIU’s batting average has steadily declined to .292 in the last 26 games, where the Salukis had under 10 hits on 14 occasions. Stealing the Show Grant Gerrard tops the Dawgs in stolen bases, as he is a near-perfect 14-of-15 on the year. No Saluki has had more than 20 stolen bases in a season since Joe Schley had 23 in 1999. Gerrard Named to College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll In addition to being named MVC Player-of-theWeek on Mar. 27, Grant Gerrard was also named to the College Baseball Foundation’s National Honor Roll, which honors the top performances around the country on a weekly basis.

Dawgs Jumping on Opponents Early The Salukis are 11-2 when scoring in the first inning. SIU also holds a 63-42 advantage over its opponents in the first two innings.
SIU Named Team-of-the-Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com SIU was named Team-of-the-Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com on Mar. 29. SIU made history last weekend with its first-ever series road win at Wichita State. SIU posted a 3-1 record in games played from Mar. 20-26. The Salukis began the week by defeating Murray State, 8-4, on Mar. 22. Two days later, SIU opened its series against No. 11 WSU with 4-2 and 5-1 wins. The Salukis then dropped Sunday’s finale, 4-3. SIU handed the Shockers their first home losses of the season. Previous CollegeBaseballInsider.com Teams-of-theWeek include San Diego (Feb. 7), Gonzaga (Feb. 14), Pepperdine (Feb. 21), Wake Forest (Feb. 28), UCLA (Mar. 7) and Virginia (Mar. 21). Head Coach Dan Callahan Dan Callahan (311-334-1, 151-185-1 MVC) is in his 12th year at the helm of one of collegiate baseball’s most storied programs. Since taking over at SIU in 1995, Callahan has recorded a total of 311 wins, the second-most of any head coach in Saluki baseball history. Callahan earned his 300th career victory with a 6-2 win over South Dakota State March 10. Callahan and Richard “Itch” Jones (738) are SIU’s only head coaches with 300 or more victories. In 2006, Callahan looks to guide the Dawgs to their fourth 30-win season in five years. Last season, SIU finished 38-21 overall, as its 38 wins marked the most in a season under Callahan. Callahan has helped produce 19 Major League draft pickes and 12 first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference selections. Four of his student-athletes have even gone on to win either the league’s “Player,” “Freshman” or “Newcomer-of-the-Year” award. The 2005 Salukis were led by P.J. Finigan, who became the first MVC Player-of-the-Year under Callahan. Before that, Callahan guided the Dawgs to backto-back 30-win campaigns in 2002 (32) and 2003 (30). He also led SIU to the MVC Tournament Championship in 2003 and 2004, where it fell one win shy of securing the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. SIU’s 10-1 start this season was the best under Callahan and SIU’s best since 1970. Callahan recently became the first head coach in Saluki baseball history to record back-to-back regular-season series wins against Wichita State.
CU’s starters hit over .300, with Zach Daeges paving the way with a .413 clip. Daeges tops the Jays in runs scored (40), hits (43) and walks (31), as well. John Nowaczyk, who is hitting .327, was named this week’s MVC Player-of-the-Week for CU. He scored nine runs on eight hits and had a double, two triples and five RBI last week. Pitching wise, right-hander Adam Schaecher is the ace of this year’s staff, holding a team-best 4-1 record and 1.48 ERA in nine starts. Schaecher, who will start Friday’s series-opener, also ranks 18th in the nation in ERA. Left-hander Scott Reese, a preseason NCBWA first-team All-American and Collegiate Baseball second-team pick entering 2006, leads the Bluejays with four saves. Another key part of CU’s staff is sophomore reliever Pat Venditte. Venditte is the nation’s only returning ambidextrous pitcher, who is 2-0 with one save and a 2.27 ERA on the year. He has also recorded a team-high 32 strikeouts to just eight walks in 35.2 innings.
All-Tournament Honors Senior Erik Alvarez, along with juniors Kevin Koski and Jordan Powell, were named to the 2006 Irish Classic all-tournament team on Mar. 18 in San Antonio, Texas. Alvarez hit a team-leading .400 (4-for-10) with two runs scored and a RBI, while Koski followed hitting .353 (6-for-17) with two runs, a double and two stolen bases. Meanwhile, Powell struck out four and did not allow a run in seven innings of a no-decision against Iowa on Mar. 15.

Salukis Get Preseason Attention SIU was among vote-getters in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Fab-40 Preseason Poll. Baseball America also predicted the Dawgs as one of 39 teams to join its preseason top-25 at the 2006 NCAA Tournament. In Baseball America’s 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Preview, SIU was picked second behind Wichita State. Seniors Tyler Norrick and Grant Gerrard were picked fifth and 17th, respectively, among Baseball America’s Fab-50 College Seniors. Norrick was also projected as the 2006 MVC Pitcher-of-the-Year. SIU Second in 2006 MVC Preseason Coaches Poll SIU was also tabbed second behind Wichita State in the 2006 MVC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Shockers garnered six first-place votes, while the Salukis (1) and Indiana State (2) earned the other tallies. Senior Tyler Norrick and junior Kevin Koski earned preseason all-conference honors for the first time in their Saluki careers. Koski was first-team allMVC and Norrick was second-team in 2005.

Roster Maintenance SIU has a severe case of senioritis in 2006, as 13 seniors return to a team that went 38-21 and finished third in the MVC last season. The Salukis return eight position starters, one starting pitcher and 16 lettermen this year.
Koski Named MVC Player-of-the-Week Kevin Koski garnered the first MVC Playerof-the-Week honor of his career on Feb. 27 after hitting .556 (10-for-18) with seven runs, two doubles, six RBI and two walks to lead SIU to a four-game sweep of Central Michigan (Feb. 23-26). He made the College Baseball 2006 MVC Preseason Foundation’s National Honor Roll a day Coaches Poll later. About the Bluejays Creighton is 20-9 overall and currently third in the MVC with a 5-4 mark. The Bluejays were ranked as high as 22nd in Baseball America’s Top-25 Poll this week. CU is the top hitting team in the Valley with a .305 average, and ranks second in both pitching (3.46 ERA) and fielding (.970). The Jays have committed a league low 34 errors on the year. Six of
