Hawai`i (3-14-3, 1-5-2 WAC) The University of Hawai‘i women’s soccer team entered the 2010 season with an array of new faces and question marks as to who would provide the scoring punch. Things looked good early on as UH bagged a 4-0 win with four different players scoring. UH scored three goals in its second win of the season vs. San Francisco on Sept. 3. But soon after the Rainbow Wahine had difficulty finding the back of the net going scoreless in six consecutive matches fueling an eight-match winless streak. The Rainbow Wahine further suffered a serious blow at the beginning of league play when cocaptain Mari Punzal was lost for the season after incurring a knee injury late in UH’s loss to Idaho on Oct. 3. Punzal was leading the team with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists). UH’s steadiest player, she was recognized in all four preseason tournaments, including MVP of the OHANA Hotels Shootout UH rallied in the absence of its senior cocaptain. The team finally snapped its eight-match winless streak its very next match with a 1-1 tie against San Jose State on Oct. 8. The Rainbow Wahine then followed that up with its first and only WAC win of the year as Skye Shimabukuro’s goal lifted UH to a 1-0 win over Fresno State. UH was unable to record any more wins in its remaining five matches but remained extremely competitive with three matches decided in doubleovertime. The Rainbow Wahine concluded the year with a 4-0 loss at Utah State. The loss put an end to a disappointing season for the Rainbow Wahine, who showed signs of hope during league play, but ultimately tied the 1996 squad for most losses in a season. UH finished eighth in the league standings and missed the WAC Tournament for the second straight year. Following the conclusion of the season, head coach Pinsoom Tenzing retired after a career in which he led the team to three WAC championships and served as the only coach in the program’s 17-year history.
