GLANCE: COACHING STAFF JASON REITMEIER HEAD COACH | 13TH SEASON AUGUSTANA, 1997
Jason Reitmeier has had at least one wrestler earn All-America honors in all 12 seasons as Augustana’s head wrestling coach and has tutored four individual national champions.
Reitmeier, now in his 13th season as the head wrestling coach at Augustana, enters the 2015-16 season with a career record of 135-63, including 48-24 in conference duals. His teams have logged 10 or more wins in each of the last six seasons and seven overall. The Vikings have gone 78-28 in dual competitions over the past five seasons.
Augustana has never finished lower than fourth in the final conference standings since he took over the program in 2003-04. Under Reitmeier, the Vikings have nine top-five region showings along with a third-place and two runner-up finishes at nationals.
Reitmeier once again led Augustana towards the top of the conference as it came down to the final dual of the season to decide the conference champion. The Vikings came up short in the conference title tilt but used the momentum to qualify three for the NCAA Championships. TJ North (125), Jayd Docken (197) and Michael Lowman (285) all qualified for the national tournament and for the second straight season North and Docken went on to earn All-America honors.
North made it all the way to the 125-pound national championship match for the second straight season and finished as the runner-up for the second straight year. Docken recorded a sixth-place finish to earn All-America honors for the second straight year. Docken went on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors before being named a second team Academic All-American.
Augustana went 12-6 in 2013-14 and sent two wrestlers to nationals, including Jayd Docken (197) and TJ North (125). North made it all the way to the 125-pound National Championship bout where he lost a 7-4 decision to Ben Sergent of Findlay to earn runner-up honors. North earned his first NCAA All-America honor and became the 111th Viking to earn All-America honors, and the 43rd to do so under Reitmeier. Augustana’s 2012-13 team went 10-6 in dual action, including a 5-3 NSIC mark. It was among Reitmeier’s youngest teams with just two seniors and 30 freshmen and sophomores.
Sophomore Jayd Docken (197 pounds) earned All-America status with a sixth-place finish at nationals. He and senior Nate Herda (149), a four-time national qualifier, were named to the all-conference team.
Individually, Docken was ranked fifth and Herda sixth in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association poll. Docken, Herda, and junior Sean Derry (184) wrestled to top four finishes in the Super Region Three meet. Derry qualified for nationals but was forced to withdraw due to injury. It was a season of close calls for the Vikings in 2012-13. Reitmeier’s crew lost to No. 1 Saint Cloud State, 19-12; No. 13 Minnesota State Mankato, 21-19; and No. 6 Upper Iowa, 21-15. Augustana placed third at the 2012 Super Regional Three competition and went on to claim a share of 10th place at nationals. Three Vikings competed with All-America distinction – Cody Lensing (125), Jason Jeremiason (133), and Chism Fink (141). In all, Reitmeier has coaches 43 All-America wrestlers.
Lensing capped an outstanding season in 2012 by winning the Elite 89 Award sponsored by the NCAA. The Elite 89 salutes a studentathlete with the highest cumulative grade-point-average participating in the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. In 2010-11, Reitmeier’s Vikings were runners-up at Super Regionals, qualified seven wrestlers for nationals, finished third in the team standings, and were fourth in the final Division II rankings.
Reitmeier’s team won the NSIC championship for the first time in 2010-11 with a perfect 7-0 dual record. Augustana came within two points of winning the league in 2009-10.
The 2004-05 season saw the Vikings win a school-record 14 dual matches and earn runner-up honors at the prestigious Cliff Keen National Duals. During the campaign the Vikings advanced to No. 1 in the nation, a historic first for the program. Augustana took first at the combined NCC/North Regional Tournament, securing the program’s first league championship since 1981. www.GoAugie.com | Page 4
