Reynoso and safety Duke Williams ... Nevada returns 13 starters (6/6/1) from last year’s team that finished second in the WAC and went to the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl and 31 overall letterwinners. LAST TIME THEY MET This will be the first meeting between Nevada and South Florida. The Wolf Pack will return the trip of this two-game series on Oct. 3, 2015. LAST TIME OUT BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Stefphon Jefferson ran for 147 yards and scored his third touchdown with 36 seconds remaining as Nevada spoiled the reopening of Memorial Stadium by beating California 31-24 on Saturday. Cody Fajardo completed 25 of 32 passes for 230 yards and added 97 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Wolf Pack (1-0), who put a damper on what was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Golden Bears in their first on-campus game in 21 months. Fajardo engineered the winning drive by throwing a 14-yard pass to Zach Sudfeld on third-and-4 from the Cal 38 and a 19yarder to Brandon Wimberly that set up Jefferson's winning score. Quarterback Zach Maynard returned after being benched for the first three series as punishment for missing a tutoring session earlier this summer to throw two touchdown passes for Cal (0-1). But he also lost a fumble deep in Nevada territory in the fourth quarter as the Bears lost at home to Nevada for the second time in 25 tries and first since 1903. The Wolf Pack had beaten Cal just once before winning 52-31 two years ago at home behind star quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Fajardo was nearly as effective this game. Fajardo helped Nevada break out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and then led three second-half scoring drives to give the Wolf Pack the win. Cal appeared to seize the momentum in the third quarter when Keenan Allen answered Jefferson's second touchdown run with an elusive 39-yard score on a reverse. Khalid Wooten fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but Cal had to settle for a field goal by Vincenzo D'Amato that cut the lead to 21-17.

Maynard then fumbled at the Nevada 21 at the end of a scramble early in the fourth quarter. The Bears did tie the game later in the fourth on a 13-yard TD pass to Chris Harper but could never take the lead. The day got off to a festive start as Cal held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to reopen Memorial Stadium, which underwent a $321 million seismic retrofit and renovation. The Bears returned home after playing last season's games across the bay at the San Francisco Giants home of AT&T Park. Highlights of the facility include a new outdoor plaza, luxury suites and press box and a refurbished Romanesque facade from the original 1923 structure. Everything but the outer facade and the seating bowl on the east side of the stadium was rebuilt from the ground up to make the stadium, which rests on an earthquake fault running almost directly between the goal posts, safer and more modern. There wasn't much to celebrate early for the sellout crowd of 63,186 as the offense sputtered behind backup Allan Bridgford, who completed one of his seven passes and the defense once again struggled against Nevada's pistol offense. Fajardo converted on fourth-and-inches on Nevada's second drive to set up Jefferson's 2-yard TD run and then went 49 yards on a keeper on the final play of the first quarter to make it 14-0. Maynard led the Bears to a score on his third drive in the game, connecting on a 37-yard TD pass to freshman Bryce Treggs but D'Amato missed a 31-yard field goal wide left in final minute of half as Cal went to the half down 14-7. THREE-DOT REVIEW With the 31-24 win over Cal, Nevada opened the season with a win for the second time in three years … The win moved Nevada’s all-time record to 511-441-33 and Hall of Fame Coach Chris Ault saw his record move to 227-103-1 … Nevada is now 59-44-3 all-time in season openers and Ault is 17-11 … More importantly, Nevada broke a stretch of bad luck in season openers on the road. Going into the opener at Cal, Nevada was 0-for-13 in season openers on the road. The Pack’s last season-opening win on the road was 1987 when the Pack won at Eastern Washington, 40-26 … A number of players saw their first collegiate action for the Pack on Saturday, including: Markus Smith, Reggie

#BattleBorn In the midst of the Civil War, Nevada became the 36th state in the union, earning the state motto, “Battle Born.” Ten short years later in 1874, the University of Nevada was founded, becoming the state’s Land Grant institution. Shortly thereafter, in 1896, the University’s athletic program was established. While both our university and the Wolf Pack athletics program have grown dramatically, we’ve never lost sight of our roots here in Nevada. Battle Born is more than a motto – it’s really a mindset here in Northern Nevada that resonates with all

of us. There’s an independent and get-it-done type spirit about us that, in turn, leads us to take tremendous pride in our community, University and athletics program. Beginning with the start of the 2012-13 season, Wolf Pack fans will see the Battle Born mark appear as a sub-brand under the umbrella of Nevada athletics. The hashtag of #BattleBorn will be used extensively on Twitter (@NevadaWolfPack). The logo will appear on the playing fields and courts of our athletics teams and will also appear on the uniforms of a number of our teams. 3

PACK VERSUS THE BCS Nevada’s win at Cal in the season opener marked the Pack’s fifth win over a Bowl Championship Series school since the inception of the BCS in 1998 and third since the start of the 2010 season. The Wolf Pack beat Washington in 2003, Northwestern in 2006, Cal in 2010 and Boston College in 2010. Nevada will have another opportunity this week when South Florida of the Big East comes to Mackay Stadium. JEFFERSON IS NEVADA’S FIRST MOUNTAIN WEST POW Stefphon Jefferson (Nevada), Cory James (Colorado State) and Jared Roberts (Colorado State) are the Mountain West Players of the Week for games through Sept. 1. Jefferson earns Offensive Player of the Week honors, while James garners the Defensive Player award and Roberts receives Special Teams recognition. This marks the first career MW weekly accolade for all three players. Jefferson carried the ball 34 times for career-highs of 147 yards and three touchdowns in Nevada’s season-opening 31-24 road win at California. The running back from Visalia, Calif., accounted for three of the Wolf Pack’s four rushing touchdowns, scoring from two yards out on each TD. His final touchdown came with 36 seconds left and proved to be the game-winner. Jefferson was the only running back to carry the ball in the contest, and his 34 attempts were the most by a Pack player since Luke Lippincott had 36 against Utah State on 2007. MORE ON JEFFERSON Not only did Jefferson have more carries in a game than any other Nevada player since 2007, he never came out of the game. Nevada ran 89 offensive plays in the game against Cal and Jefferson was on the field for every single one of them. It was Jefferson’s third 100-yard game of his career and his first three-touchdown game. It was his first-multi-touchdown game since the New Mexico State game (Oct. 29) last season. TEN STRAIGHT OVER THE CENTURY MARK With Stefphon Jefferson’s 147-yard effort against Cal, Nevada ran its streak of consecutive games with at least one 100-yard rusher to 10 straight games. The streak began against UNLV on Oct. 8, 2011 when Jefferson had his first career 100-yard game. It’s continued into 2012 as four different Nevada players have been involved in extending the streak. The stretch includes one game – vs. Louisiana Tech in 2011 – in which two Nevada players topped the century mark in the same game. Here’s the breakdown: Player Carries-Yards Opponent (Date) Stefphon Jefferson 17-100 vs. UNLV (Oct. 8, 2011) Stefphon Jefferson 14-108 vs. New Mexico (Oct. 15, 2011) Mike Ball 26-198 vs. Fresno State (Oct. 22, 2011) Lampford Mark 8-185 at New Mexico State (Oct. 29, 2011) Lampford Mark 24-105 vs. Hawaii (Nov. 12, 2011) Cody Fajardo 22-110 vs. Louisiana Tech (Nov. 19, 2011) Lampford Mark 28-109 vs. Louisiana Tech (Nov. 19, 2011) Lampford Mark 22-111 at Utah State (Nov. 26, 2011) Lampford Mark 24-104 vs. Idaho (Dec. 3, 2011) Lampford Mark 29-183 vs. Southern Miss (Dec. 24, 2011) Stefphon Jefferson 34-147 at Cal (Sept. 1, 2012) CODY COMMANDS THE PISTOL If the season opener against Cal was any indication, sophomore quarterback Cody Fajardo is poised to put up some special numbers. 4

The following is a list of Nevada’s “Explosive Plays” – those good for 20 yards or longer – during the 2012 season. at Cal (Sept. 1, 2012) Cody Fajardo 49-yard run (TD) Aaron Bradley 23-yard pass from Fajardo.

Against the Bears, Fajardo was basically flawless, completing 25-of-32 for 230 yards while running for 97 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown run. Fajardo commanded the offense to the tune of 450 yards of total offense. Fajardo connected on his first seven attempts in the game for 51 yards. Fajardo his six different receivers during the game and each target had at least three catches. During the game-winning drive, Fajardo at the top of his game. He was 4-for-4 on the drive, including a 16-yard pass to Zach Sudfeld on third-and-4 and a 19-yard pass to Brandon Wimberly on third-and-9, a play that set up Stefphon Jefferson’s game-winning TD run. Fajardo’s completion percentage was at 78 percent for the game, 10 points higher than his 68.8 percent completion percentage in 2011, which was the best by a Nevada quarterback in the 21st century. WIM RETURNS Senior wide receiver Brandon Wimberly missed all of the 2011 season due to injury but his senior season got off to a solid start on Saturday. Wimberly led Nevada in receiving with 7 catches for 83 yards. Five of the catches went for first downs – including three first-down receptions that came on third-down plays. None was bigger than his last catch – a 19-yarder on third-and-9 that took Nevada to the 2-yard line, setting up Stefphon Jefferson’s game-winning score. Wimberly, the 2009 WAC Freshman of the Year and a 2010 All-WAC selection, at full strength in 2012 and will lead what is a very young receiving corps for the Wolf Pack. Entering this week, Wimberly has caught at least one pass in every collegiate game of his career, a streak of 28 games that started at Notre Dame to open the 2009 season. That streak ranks as the sixth-longest in the nation entering the 2012 season. Consecutive Games With At Least One Reception Player School Pos. Yr. After redshirting in 2007, he missed all of the 2008 season due to injury. He missed three games in 2009 and three more in 2010. Going into the 2011 season, Sudfeld was poised for a breakout season, only to see everything come to an end with a broken bone in his lower leg during the season opener at Oregon. His career was thought to be over but late in 2011, Sudfeld made up his mind to come back for one more year. It took some time to sway Chris Ault but the head coach eventually agreed and the NCAA later approved a sixth season for Sudfeld due to medical hardship. Sudfeld’s perseverance and leadership were rewarded in August when his teammates voted him as a team captain. Said Sudfeld of the honor: “This being my sixth year, I’ve seen five years’ worth of captains before me and knowing some of those guys and who they were, on and off the field, I am just so incredibly honored to be selected.” The senior came up big against Cal, with four catches for 41 yards. And it was the timing of the catches that showed Sudfeld is one of Nevada’s go-to players. His first two catches each came on third-down plays of drives that resulted in touchdowns. His third catch was good for nine yards to open what would prove to be Nevada’s game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. Later in the drive, with Nevada facing third-and-4 and outside of field-goal range at the Cal 38, Sudfeld leaped to haul in a 16-yard pass from Cody Fajardo to give Nevada a first down and keep the drive alive. Four plays later, Stefphon Jefferson scored the game-winning touchdown. 5

FRONT FOUR Virtually any preseason analysis of the Nevada football team going into the 2012 season pointed to the defensive line as the Wolf Pack’s biggest question mark this year. One game does not make a season, but the Wolf Pack’s front four began to answer any questions with its performance in the season opener against Cal. Nevada started a freshman (Lenny Jones), two sophomores (Jordan Hanson and Brock Hekking) and a junior (Jack Reynoso) on the front against Cal with all but Reynoso making their first collegiate start. The result? Nevada held the Bears to just 113 yards rushing on the day. That figure is 41 yards under Cal’s average from the 2011 season and 34 yards fewer than what the 2011 Nevada defense allowed on average. Additionally, Hekking registered one of Nevada’s two sacks on the day and the front four combined for 3.5 tackles for loss against the Bears. Hekking, who had four tackles on the day, was named Nevada’s Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win. Jones was impressive in his own right, tallying five tackles with a forced fumble and a pass-breakup in his first collegiate game. Jones notched the forced fumble from Zach Maynard when the quarterback was scrambling inside the Nevada 20yard line in the fourth quarter. Reynoso recovered to thwart a Cal scoring opportunity and Nevada scored a field goal with the ensuing possession. Prior to that series, Cal was driving again and Jones’s pass breakup helped stall the drive at the Nevada 40. His five tackles established a career high for the defensive end. LANE STARTS (AND FINISHES) With teammate Marlon Johnson unavailable in the first half against Cal, redshirt freshman Bryan Lane Jr. saw his first collegiate start in his first game for Nevada. The free safety was credited with three tackles on the day but it was his play near the end of the game that sealed Nevada’s 31-24 win. After Stefphon Jefferson scored the go-ahead touchdown with 36 second left, Cal was scrambling to try and tie the game. Near midfield, Cal quarterback Zach Maynard hity Chris Harper with a long pass inside Nevada’s 25-yard line, but Lane delivered a huge hit, jarring the ball free. Albert Rosette recovered the fumble to put the game on ice for Nevada. PBUs Last year, Nevada’s Isaiah Frey was second in the nation in pass breakups and led the nation in passes defended. Though Frey is off to the NFL (Chicago Bears), the Pack defense picked it up on Saturday against Cal, breaking up eight passes, including two each by DeAndre Boughton and Charles Garrett. In 2011, Nevada broke up 56 passes on the year, which was an average of 4.3 PBUs per game. Nevada held opposing passers to a completion rate of just 48.3 percent, which led the nation. DIRTY LAUNDRY One of the few blemishes of Nevada’s season-opening win at Cal was the number of penalties on the Wolf Pack. The zebras tossed 11 yellow flags on Nevada, resulting in 110 yards. Each of those figures were the most by a Nevada team since a win against UNLV in which Nevada was flagged 15 times for 169 yards. TEAM AWARDS The Wolf Pack has a number of awards within the team named on a weekly basis, usually following victories. The following is a list of team awards so far this season: Offensive Player of the Week vs. Cal: Cody Fajardo, sophomore quarterback. Defensive Player of the Week vs. Cal: Brock Hekking, sophomore defensive end. Basalite Big Blocker (O-Lineman who grades out the best) vs. Cal: Jeff Nady, senior tackle. Blackshirts (Top special teams performers) vs. Cal: Tyler Houk, Stephen Jeffers, Bryan Lane Jr., Jonathan McNeal, Chase Tenpenny. Offensive Scout Teamer of the Week vs. Cal: Hasaan Henderson, freshman quarterback. 6

Defensive Scout Teamer of the Week vs. Cal: Gabe Lee, sophomore defensive back. YOUNG PUPS Though Nevada does have last year’s WAC Freshman of the Year Cody Fajardo at the reigns of the Pistol offense, the Wolf Pack does not boast a lot of experience at the position. In fact, Fajardo is the only quarterback on the roster who has taken a snap at the FBS level. Sophomore Devin Combs played one season at the junior college level before coming to Nevada and redshirting last year. The other four quarterbacks are all freshmen: Tanner Roderick (redshirt), Hasaan Henderson, Tyler Stewart and Jacob Hollister. Nevada is one of just six schools in the country that does not have an upperclassman on its roster at the quarterback position. The others: Auburn, Indiana, Marshall, Oregon and Texas A&M. TEAM CAPTAINS In a vote by the players, four seniors were selected on Friday to serve as the captains for the Nevada football team during the 2012 season. From the offense, tackle Jeff Nady and tight end Zach Sudfeld were chosen. Linebackers DeAndre Boughton and Albert Rosette were selected from the defense. “I think the players did a great job with their selections this year,” head coach Chris Ault said. “What really impressed me was that they selected four guys who lead by the way that they play.” Sudfeld is a senior tight end who is returning for his sixth season of eligibility after missing nearly all of 2011 with a lower leg injury suffered in the season opener. Rosette started last season at defensive end and moved back home to the middle linebacker position this year. Boughton, an outside linebacker, is another Wolf Pack player coming off an injury as he missed all of 2011 due to a leg injury suffered in the weight room in the summer before the season. This year, Boughton was praised for his leadership in the voluntary summer workout program. Nady, a tackle from Minden, Nev., is a three-year starter who has developed into one of the best tackles in the Mountain West. BOWL STREAK With last year’s appearance in the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl, the Nevada football team extended its streak of consecutive seasons with a bowl game appearance to

NEVADA PICKED SECOND IN FIRST SEASON IN MOUNTAIN WEST The 2012 Mountain West Preseason Poll was announced in late July and Nevada was picked to finish second in its inaugural season in the conference. Nevada tallied 244 points in the poll, which was voted on by the league’s media members, and trailed only Boise State (296). Three different teams received first-place votes in the poll but Nevada was not one of them. Boise State had the lion’s share at 27 with third-place Fresno State receiving two and fifth-place San Diego State getting one. 2012 Mountain West Football Predicted Order of Finish Rk. prior to the season. Leading the way on offense were Nevada’s stellar guard-tackle duo of seniors Chris Barker and Jeff Nady. On defense, senior safety Duke Williams was selected along with junior defensive tackle Jack Reynoso. Boise State led the way with five selections and Nevada was second with four. The team was voted on by a poll of the league’s media members. COMEBACK WINS Nevada head coach Chris Ault has well over 200 wins in his Hall of Fame career three dozen of those victories have been comeback victories in the last 30 minutes of games. Ault entered this year with 34 come-from-behind wins and he moved that number to 36 with back-to-back comeback wins to wrap up play in October. On Oct. 22 against Fresno State, Nevada trailed 24-23 in the third quarterback when Fresno State scored on its opening drive of the half. Nevada took the lead for good when Bubba Boudreaux recovered a fumbled punt return in the end zone and the Pack never looked back en route to the 45-38 win. On Oct. 29 at New Mexico State, Nevada trailed going into the second half, 27-20. But the Wolf Pack scored the first three touchdowns of the second half to take control of the game as Nevada would go on to win 48-34. Ault, of course, was the first to engineer the greatest comeback in the history of the NCAA when he guided the Pack back from a 35-point deficit against Weber State in 1991. WOLF PACK RADIO COVERS THE SILVER STATE The Wolf Pack Radio Network has added additional affiliates throughout the state and expanded its football pre-game show to 90 minutes this season. The WPRN has also extended its football pre-game show to 90 minutes this year. The show will break down the day’s game, featuring interviews with Ault, Wolf Pack players and analysis of the Wolf Pack’s opponents. Nevada play-by-play voice Ryan Radtke will host the pre-game show and will be joined by analyst Chris Vargas and a newcomer to the network in former Wolf Pack quarterback Tyler Lantrip. Vargas, a standout quarterback for the Wolf Pack in the 1990s, is enshrined in the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame and his name can be found throughout the Wolf Pack records books. Lantrip was the starter at quarterback to open the 2011 season and brings a unique persepective with his knowledge of the Pistol offense. BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Stefphon Jefferson ran for 141 yards and scored his third touchdown with 36 seconds remaining as Nevada spoiled the reopening of Memorial Stadium by beating California 31-24 on Saturday. Cody Fajardo completed 25 of 32 passes for 230 yards and added 101 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Wolf Pack (1-0), who put a damper on what was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Golden Bears in their first on-campus game in 21 months. The Wolf Pack had beaten Cal just once before winning 52-
