2012 Season Outlook
R
eplacing seven starters from last year’s NCAA College Cup Semifinal team that posted a 21-2-1 overall record will provide quite the challenge for the 2012 Creighton men’s soccer squad, but don’t expect the perrennial powerhouse to lower its expectations. Secondyear head coach Elmar Bolowich brings in 15 new faces to combine with a talented core of returners who have the desire to make it back to the school’s fifth NCAA College Cup. With the loss of All-American’s Andrew Duran, Ethan Finlay, Brian Holt and Greg Jordan, the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year Bolowich turns to a core of returners to mesh the familiar with the fresh faces. “I expect a core of proven returning players to lead by example, as they understand our style of play,” said Bolowich when looking ahead to the fall. “Jose Gomez, Bruno Castro, Andrew Ribeiro and Eric Miller were solid starters on a team that went to the College Cup. I will lean on these student-athletes to guide the other players.” The midfield will provide the most depth for the Bluejays this season, as Gomez and Castro will be counted upon as the main playmakers. The pair of Second-Team All-MVC middles combined for 10 goals and 16 assists last season, Gomez starting 21 matches and Castro starting all 24. Adding depth in the midfield are returners Ribeiro and Jose Ribas. A senior in the fall, Ribeiro will be slated as an outside midfielder after starting all 24 matches last season, scoring four goals (all game-winners) and dishing off one assist. Ribas made 17 appearances in his rookie campaign last season, finishing with a goal and four assists while in the middle of the field. Other new options at midfield include redshirt freshman JP Pulverenti, Kansas City native Chris Tuso and Bryce Ciambella, a Florida native who just led his 18U Rush team to the National Championship. One of the biggest question marks on the Bluejay starting lineup will be at the attacking position, as Creighton tries to replace Finlay, who accounted for 14 of the team’s 40 goals in 2011. Not a single potential starter was on the Creighton roster a season ago. Three of the four incoming attackers do bring some sort of collegiate experience to Creighton, however. Sonny Makh, originally from England and formerly of Louisburg College in North Carolina, led his Hurricanes squad with 26 goals and 26 assists last season. Carlos McCrary was just named the National Premier Soccer League Player of the Year, scoring 17 goals this summer for the Madison 56ers. McCrary added three goals and one
assist last season with national champion North Carolina. Junior transfer Sung “Sean” Kim gained experience playing at both the Foothills College and De Anza College. Two true freshmen will also get a shot at a starting spot on the Bluejay front line. German native Timo Pitter and Myles Englis, a Darlington Academy product, both help add to the depth of the Bluejay attackers. The Bluejay backfield will be patrolled by Miller, who spent his summer playing with the United States U-20 National Team. A member of the 2011 MVC All-Freshman squad in his inaugural campaign, Miller was a key cog in the defense that held opponents to just five goals all season, a 0.21 goals against average, and posted 19 combined shutouts.
Jose Gomez was named Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference last year and will lead the Bluejay midfield in 2012.
A pair of senior defenders will vie for starting positions this fall, as Jake Brown and Brent Kallman bring full-speed game experience to the backline this season. After transferring into the Bluejay program prior to last season, Brown started 10 of the 20 matches he played in last season, providing depth to the record-setting 2011 squad. Kallman has now played in 55 matches over the last three seasons, playing in each of the NCAA Tournament matches at the end of last season. A trio of redshirt freshmen learned the Bluejay system in last year’s College Cup run, and will look for their turn to step on the field and make an impact on the Bluejay program. Sean Moyo, JT Seger and Christian Blandon will each look for playing time on a backline that has ranked
17
among the nation’s best the last six seasons. Bolowich and the Bluejay staff are excited for the incoming class of defenders, with six players adding depth. Junior college transfer Benito Amaral impressed the staff in the spring, as the outside defender learned the Creighton system in workouts prior to summer break. A quartet of true freshmen will all compete for a spot on the back line, with Benjamin Kucera (from the Chicago Fire), Brendan Hines-Ike and Eric DeJulio (Sporting KC) vying for a spot as a center back and Gabe Garbin (NFC) contending for the left back position. Rounding out the Bluejay defensive candidates will be a freshman from Germany, Vincent Keller; a junior transfer from SMU, Zach Barnes; and a true freshman from the Omaha Futbol Club, Hunter Gorby. Barnes and Gorby also have the athleticism to add depth in the midfield. Creighton will carry just three goalkeepers on the roster this year after traveling with five on the squad last season. While none of the three have significant experience, count on sophomore Alex Bolowich and freshmen Oshick Shams and Jeff Gal to replace the fouryear starter Brian Holt. Bolowich transferred to Omaha with his father, head caoch Elmar Bolowich, and had the benefit to learn from Holt last season. He and Gal, a redshirt freshman, saw first-hand what Holt did and will compete for the starting position in goal this fall. Shams joins the Bluejays for his rookie campaign after a stellar club career down in Texas. With a host of uncertainties, the former NSCAA National Coach of the Year Bolowich is excited to see how this squad will come together starting in August. “The recruiting class consists of a lot of talent and ability and some will challenge our returning players for starting positions and playing time. We are very deep and balanced in all positions, and I anticipate a healthy level of competition amongst the players for starting spots. “It will be exciting to see how this group will come together. We are ready to get started and look forward to an outstanding season.” The Bluejays again play a challenging nonconference schedule as they take aim at earning their 20th NCAA Tournament bid in the last 21 seasons. The Jays will look to defend their MVC regular-season crown, opening conference play Sept. 29 at Drake. Creighton’s 2012 schedule features eight teams that reached the 2011 NCAA Tournament, including home games with seven of them, highlighted by national power Akron.
