1-1, 0-1 LSC In the Polls No. 20 AFCA

Game Center NEXT UP The Texans will compete in the Lone Star Conference Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium for the first time after last year’s initial event. Tarleton will take on No. 20 Abilene Christian in an All-LSC affair, with kick-off slated for 4 p.m. Entering the game, the Wildcats have the series lead over the Texans, 13-8. Last season, ACU defeated Tarleton on a last second play in Stephenville, a motivation factor for the Texans in 2012. LAST WEEK In the season opener for the 2012 season, Tarleton upset No. 4 Midwestern State in a game that shocked the Division II landscape. Last year’s No. 1 ranked offense and reigning Lone Star Conference Champions, MSU, was held to 319 total yards and just 17 points. In comparison, the Mustangs averaged almost 50 points and over 500 yards of offense each game in 2011. The Texans took an early lead thanks to a pair of LSC Offensive Player of the Week Jerome Regal touchdowns. Blake Barnes added two identical 25 yard field goals in the later stages of the game to overcome the fourth-ranked Mustangs. LSC Defensive Player of the Week Marquis Wadley recorded the game-clinching interception with 48 seconds to go in the contest.

Notebook HONORING A FALLEN BROTHER The Tarleton football team lost a fellow Texan in Zach Shaver in 2010. Shaver was a freshman defensive lineman for Tarleton who suffered a head trauma on a routine play in practice on March 27. He passed away two days later on March 29 in Fort Worth. Shaver was a spark plug for the Texan defense and was expected to fight for playing time in only his second year. No. 96 will always be a part of the Texan football program. In the second year of the honor, head coach Cary Fowler has chosen two players to wear the No. 96 jersey in memory of Shaver. These players represent everything a Tarleton football player should be. A good work ethic, integrity, spirit and teamwork are just a few of the ideals that Shaver represented to the Texans. This year, the Texan coaching staff chose a pair of juniors and friends of Shaver. Defensive tackle and high school teammate Cole Vitolo and defensive end Cory Jackson will share the No. 96 jersey in 2012. OFFENSIVE PROWESS Tarleton got off to a strong start offensively thanks to the consistent play of junior quarterback Aaron Doyle (Evant, TX) and the breakout performance of sophomore running back Jerome Regal (Garland, TX). Together, Doyle and Regal led the offense to a 354-total yard performance with 137 yards through the air and 232 yards on the ground. Regal alone had 152 yards and two scores on 33 carries, while Doyle went 18-for-26 with 137 yards and 10 rushes for 46 yards. Arthur Buckingham caught five passes for 32 yards while also returning punts and preseason All-American Clifton Rhodes III added 47 yards on four catches. Tarleton had six different receivers catch a pass and five different ball carriers in the contest. As mentioned in the season preview, the Texans return 4,000 yards of receiving to this year’s squad. With the air-raid attack put into place for the second year and new offensive coordinator Justin Carrigan implementing his own variations, the Texan offense will cause headaches for opposing defenses, such as it did for MSU. DEFENSIVE CLINIC Just one year after leading Division II in offense with 48.6 points per game and 531.9 total yards each contest, the Texans had their hands full going into Saturday’s meeting. Unlike the 2011 showdown, this year’s squad showed up to play and stifled the most dangerous offense in the conference. Tarleton held returning Harlon Hll Trophy nominee Brandon Kelsey to 173 passing yards and 71 rushing yards. Keidrick Jackson, a first-team all-conference player, was held to just 32 rushing yards as well. The Texans forced MSU into unfamiliar situations, thanks to the shutdown play of corners Dashaun Phillips and true freshman Jeremy Louis. Together, these two allowed the safeties to read the run and the linebackers to plug the gaps in the line. At the end of the day, Tarleton forced a fumble and picked off two passes, one of which sealed the game for the Texans.

HONORED BY THE LSC Tarleton vs. Abilene Christian After last week’s performance, two Tarleton players earned Lone Star Conference Player of the Week accolades. On the offensive side of the ball, Jerome Regal got vs. the nod for his 33-carry, 152-yard and two touchdown perfomance. Defensively, 13 Marquis Wadley showed why he was the leading tackler in the LSC in 2011. The Nov. 3, 1973 8Abilene Christian won, 49-7 Home junior from Mesquite had a game-high 12 tackles, seven of which were solo, and Nov. 9, 1974 Abilene Christian won, 56-14 Away Nov. 8, 1975 Abilene Christian won, 35-21 Home picked off Kelsey’s pass with 47 seconds to go on the game-tying drive attempt. Oct. 23, 1993 Abilene Christian won, 57-15 Home SPECIAL SPECIAL TEAMS In 2011, special teams problems plagued the Tarleton Texans and led to a few tough losses on the schedule. That was not the case this past Saturday though as Tarleton recorded a crucial blocked punt, that led to vital points. Jamal Mays had a big blocked punt in the third quarter, that he also recovered. That set up Regal’s go-ahead touchdown making it a 14-10 contest. On top of that, the return game was consistent and steady. Senior Arthur Buckingham, senior Cordell Valentine, and Regal all returned kicks and punts without turning the ball over. That set up good field position for the Texans as well.

2012 LSC STANDINGS

Abilene Christian THIS SEASON The Wildcats enter Saturday’s contest as the No. 20 team in the nation, after suffering a tough loss to No. 24 Texas A&M-Kingsville this past weekend. ACU’s offense was dominant in a 51-0 victory over McMurry the first game of the season, but managed just 13 points against the Javelinas in week two. At 1-1, the Wildcats will be looking to get back on the right path with a win at Cowboys Stadium. Tarleton on the other hand will be vying for their second straight win over a ranked opponent. As a team, ACU is averaging 32.0 points per game and holding opponents to 8.0 points each contest. Their 342.5 yards of total offense is outdone by the 360.5 yards per game they allow. The Wildcats are a veteran team with many dangerous weapons on both sides of the ball however. Tarleton can expect discipline and experience as strengths for the ACU squad this weekend.

Tarleton stuns No. 4 MSU in Memorial Stadium STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texans opened up their 2012 campaign against the No. 4 team in the nation, and ended it in dramatic fashion with a nail-biting 20-17 victory over Midwestern State Saturday night. Marquis Wadley picked off a Brandon Kelsey pass with 47 seconds remaining in the game as the Mustangs were marching down the field for either a game-tying field goal or the game-winning touchdown. The pick ended MSU’s chances as Tarleton escaped with a three-point victory over the No. 4 Mustangs. In the first game of the season, it was expected that both sides would be anxious, excited, and nervous to get the year underway. Midwestern started off with the ball, but a stout Tarleton defense held them to just 20 yards on five plays. Next up, the Texans marched down the field with a 13-play, 46 yard drive that took 5:39 off the clock. MSU held Tarleton to a field goal attempt, but Isaac Arellano’s 35-yard kick went wide left. The game was left scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. The second quarter began in the middle of a Tarleton possession that saw promise for the home team. Led by junior starting quarterback Aaron Doyle and sophomore running back Jerome Regal, the Texans fought their way through the Mustang defense down inside the red zone. That is when Regal really stepped up, carrying the ball three consecutive plays, the last of which was a threeyard touchdown up the middle. With 12:52 to go in the first half, the Texans took a lead on the reigning Lone Star Conference Champions MSU. Blake Barnes extra point went through the uprights for a 7-0 Tarleton lead. It would not be long before the visiting Mustangs answered though, as MSU drove down the field on a 13-play, 89-yard drive that ate up 5:35 of the game clock. The Mustangs were able to get on the board thanks to a Keidrick Jackson one-yard rush over a pile of linemen. Greg Saladino’s extra point tied the game up at 7-7. The score would remain that way as the teams headed into half time. Through 30 minutes of play, neither team was able to get a stronghold on the momentum of the game. As the third quarter got underway, the Mustangs took advantage on their first possession and got a field goal from Saladino at the 8:37 mark. That gave MSU a 10-7 lead over the Texans, their first of the game. Tarleton tried to put more points on the board in their next possession, but were forced to punt the ball away. Midwestern State’s Kendall Wrenn was back to the return the kick, but fumbled the ball into the diving Cameron Bridgewater from Tarleton. Instead of the Mustangs taking over possession, the Texans had the ball inside the 10-yard line. With such great field position, Regal had no trouble punching the ball in for his second touchdown of the game, and a 14-10 Tarleton lead. The Texan defense used the momentum from the offense and stuffed the Mustang defense on the next possession. Once again, special teams played a huge role in the game as Jamal Mays blocked MSU’s punt and recovered it at Midwestern’s 19-yard line. That resulted in a Blake Barnes field goal, giving the Texans a 17-10 advantage with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. Barnes went on to add another field goal in the beginning of the fourth with a 25-yarder, pushing Tarleton’s lead to 20-10. The Texans had complete control of the game at this point, but MSU was not going to give up without a fight. With 9:22 to go in the fourth, Kelsey led the Mustangs down the field with a mixture of quick passes to the flanks and rushes up the middle. After nine plays, 75-yards and 2:57, MSU scored on a Kelsey six-yard rush. The Saladino extra point made it 20-17 in favor of the Texans, but time was quickly becoming a factor. Both teams went back and forth over the next seven minutes, jockeying for position. It ended up being the Mustangs though with the last chance as they took over possession at their own 20-yard line with 1:28 on the clock. MSU’s drive looked promising and they managed to get to the 50-yard line before Wadley came up with the biggest play of the game. Last year’s LSC leading tackler read Kelsey’s eyes as he dropped back and jumped right in front of the route to pick off the ball. Wadley’s interception sealed the fate of the Mustangs as Tarleton upset No. 4 Midwestern St., 20-17, in Stephenville. The Texans overcame penalties, a potent MSU offense, and their own kicking woes to pull off one of their biggest wins in Memorial Stadium history. It also marked the first win for Tarleton over MSU since 2009.
