2012 Workshop Offerings I Am Not My Hair: Embracing Your Natural Beauty Your hair is as beautifully unique as you are, and it comes in many colors, textures, and lengths. However, embracing one’s natural beauty is one of the greatest challenges that a young woman faces today. Using historical examples and fun activities, we will discuss the importance of self-acceptance and the joys of wearing our hair naturally.
Dangerous Curves Ahead: How Females Are Portrayed in Art How have women’s bodies and faces been captured in art throughout the ages? Come investigate artwork from various countries, time periods, and artists, and marvel at how women have been portrayed to represent power, intellect, motherhood, and beauty. Using artistic depictions of women from famous masterpieces, create your own collage to create a visual parody, or make an artistic statement of your own!
Balance Yourself Looking for a little balance in your life? Learn to balance both your mind and body using the principles of Pilates. Find how Pilates uses certain movements to help you become more flexible and strong. Some yoga and dance movements will be incorporated, as well. You will leave feeling re-energized as you combine physical movement with mindfulness techniques. 2012 Workshop Offerings The Lies My TV Told Me Did you know that the average American woman is 5'4" tall and weighs 140 pounds? However, did you know that the average American model is 5'11" tall and weighs 117 pounds? The media influences many of our daily thoughts and beliefs about ourselves: how we should look, what we should wear, and what we should buy. Come learn how to deconstruct media ads and messages in order to understand the lies media feeds us through magazines and television. Steppin’ Up and Steppin’ Out Members of an African-American sorority at a local university will inspire you to use your entire body as a percussive instrument. Come join the fun and learn how to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a variety of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps.
The Mosaic Me We are all made up of various cultures and traditions, but sometimes we struggle to balance those differences to find out who we really are. What part of our parents’ races, cultures, religions, and beliefs resonates with who we really are inside? Come explore the stories of women who have learned to accept all of the wonderful pieces of their backgrounds. Challenge yourself to explore your various “pieces,” put them back together to create you, and gain a greater appreciation of yourself. Workshop offerings are subject to change without notice.
