2014 Prep bowl Eden Prairie, Mankato West, Becker, Rochester Lourdes, Holdingford, Minneota, Grand Meadow Class 6A Eden Prairie 28, Totino-Grace 27 Head coach Mike Grant led the Eden Prairie Eagles to another state title in the large school division with an exciting, 28-27 victory over Totino Grace, coached by Jeff Ferguson. Eden Prairie fell behind in the game but staged a second half comeback led by a solid running game. Holding on to a 28-21 lead in the 4th quarter, Eden Prairie had to hold off a late charging Grace squad that mounted a last minute TD drive to cut the score to 28-27. Totino Grace coach Ferguson decided to go for the win rather than settle for overtime and attempted a two point conversion pass that fell incomplete, giving Eden Prairie their state title. Class 5A Mankato West 42, Simley 19 The 5A game swung on a big momentum switch in the 3rd quarter. Mankato West held a slim 21-19 lead over Simley, coached by Rex King, and then proceeded to outscore the Spartans, 21-0, to claim another state title. The Scarlets of West, coached by Mark Esch, capitalized on big offensive plays to mount their second domination, along with a defense that kept Simley off the scoreboard giving up an early 3rd quarter TD. Class 4A Becker 24, DeLaSalle 6 An athletic defense powered the Becker Bulldogs to a 24-6 victory over the DeLaSalle Islanders. The Bulldogs forced interceptions and made big plays throughout the game that saw Becker build a 24-0 lead by the midway point of the 3rd quarter. Dwight Lundeen’s team consistently kept the Islanders off balance and held a high powered DeLaSalle team, coach by Sean McMenomy, to no points until the fourth quarter. Class 3A Rocheser Lourdes 35, New London-Spicer 14 Rochester Lourdes topped New London-Spicer 35-14 as they consistently ground out yards and points in each of the game’s four quarters. Both teams have been regular participants in the playoffs as Lourdes has garnered several recent state titles and NLS has made it to the last two consecutive Prep Bowls. New London-Spicer, coached by Dan Essler, stayed with Lourdes in the first half, trailing only 21-14. But Lourdes,

coach by Mike Kesler, added two more TDs while keeping NLS off the scoreboard in the final two quarters. Class 2A Holdingford 20, BOLD 18 (2 OT) Probably the most exciting game of the Prep Bowl was the 20-18 double overtime victory of Holdingford, coached by Luke Mitchell, over BOLD, coached by Steve Solem. The game was a defensive battle for most of the game’s four quarters. The first TD wasn’t scored until only 3 minutes remained. But from that point on the points and big plays kept the fans for both teams on their feet. Holdingford scored with no time remaining on the clock to tie the game at 6-6. A failed extra point set the game into overtime. Extra point proved crucial in the outcome as only one team was able to convert a point after. The teams traded TD’s in the first OT but both missed extra point attempts. Holdingford then scored and converted to put the pressure on BOLD, who responded with a TD, but couldn’t convert the two point try. Class 1A Minneota 28, Dawson-Boyd 14 Minneota secured its fifth state title in football with a 2814 victory over familiar opponent Dawson-Boyd. The two teams play each on regular basis as they both belong to the Little Sioux conference. Minneota, coached by Chad Johnston, used a strong running game to score two early TD’s and run for close to 300 yards rushing. Dawson-Boyd, coached by Cory Larson, was able to mount a response but could overcome Minneota’s dominant line play. Class 9 Man Grand Meadow 48, Edgerton-Ellsworth 0 In the tournaments only real “blow out” score, 48-0, the Super larks of Grand Meadow, coached by Gary sloan, claimed their second consecutive state title. They defeated a Edgerton-Ellsworth team, coached by Andrew Fleischman, that had been averaging over 40 points per game. Turnovers played a key role in the game as the Grand Meadow defense was able to force four interceptions and one fumble. The Meadowlarks built a 33-0 halftime lead and cruised to the victory.
