Softball State Championship – May 14th -17th

I.

GENERAL INFORMATION A. The District of Columbia State Athletic Association is the official governing body for the Softball tournament. B. Schools choosing to enter the tournament have the responsibility for reading and adhering to the rules and regulations stated within this Softball Bulletin. C. Eligibility rules for all participants can be found in DCMR Title 5; Chapter 27 on the DCSAA website (dcsaasports.org). D. As per NFHS rules, an optic yellow ball is required for all contests. E. All games are seven inning single elimination games. F. As allowed in NFHS Rule 4-2-3, by state adoption, a game called for any reason, where a winner cannot be determined, or any game called at any time for mechanical failure (artificial lights, water systems, etc.) will be treated as a suspended game. If the game is to be completed, it will be continued from the point of suspension, with the lineup and batting order of each team exactly the same as the lineup and batting order at the moment of suspension, subject to the rules of the game. G. Courtesy runners are permitted for injured players and catchers only. H. Ties will be broken as authorized by rule NFHS Rule 4-2-6. 1. Beginning with the eighth inning, each half inning will begin with the last completed turn at bat from the previous inning (or her legal substitute or courtesy runner) on second base. [Note: Enforcement of an “automatic out” as described in NFHS Rule 3-3-8b or 4-3-1g shall never be interpreted to create an out before the extra inning is begun.] After the leadoff batter has completed her turn at bat, any“ automatic out” in the batting order will be an automatic out as prescribed in NFHS Rule 7-4-1.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Quarterfinals – May 14th Rain Date – May 15th Semifinals – May 16th @ Nat’s Youth Baseball Academy 5:00pm and 7:00pm Championships– May 17th @ Catholic University @ 1:30 Rain Date- May 18th @ Catholic University NOTE: All games will be played at the higher seeds home field unless otherwise noted.

A. Playing Rules 1. The tournament will be conducted under National Federation rules. 2. SEEDING: Will be determined by Coaches Poll to be conducted on April 26th, May 2nd and the Final on May 9th. The Final Poll will be used to seed the teams, while the prior polls will be published for informational purposes. The number of points a team will receive per each vote will be as follows:  1st- 10 points  2nd- 8 points  3rd- 7 points  4th- 6 points  5th- 5 points  6th- 4 points  7th- 3 points  8th- 2 points The team with the highest number of 1st Place votes is the number 1 seed 3. BRACKETS: Quarterfinals- May 16th 1 vs. 8; 2 vs. 7; 3 vs. 6; 4 vs. 5; Semi finals-May 16th (winner 1/8 plays winner 4/5; 2/7 plays winner 3/6); 4. A game will be considered complete any time after 4-1/2 to 5 innings when a team is 10 runs behind and has completed its term at bat. 2

5. DCSAA certified officials will be assigned for each game. Two officials will be assigned for quarterfinal and semifinal games and three officials will be used for championship and consolation games. 6. Warm-up procedures a. Both teams will warm up on the entire field for 15 minutes each. b. The visiting team will warm up first unless extenuating circumstances cause a late arrival of the visiting team in which case the home team shall warm up first. 8. In case of inclement weather, athletic directors shall consult with the tournament director before finalizing arrangements. 9. Postponed/suspended games may be required to be made up as part of a double header. 10. All games must be played on a regulation softball field. The field must be skinned and cannot be a baseball field or one with a raised mound. Turf fields without mounds are permissible 11. Weekday games will be played at 5 p.m. 12. The home team will provide two optic yellow game balls.
