2013 Year in review A Season to Remember: Under first-year Head Coach Jason Reed, the Greyhounds continued their recent excellence in the 2013 season, highlighted by a trip to the NCAAs and the program’s fourth-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship.

New Face, Old Place: The Greyhounds got a new head coach for the first time in 17 years when they named Jason Reed head man March 18, 2013, but the Hounds’ success remained constant. As the sixth coach in program history, Reed immediately made an impact with the Crimson and Grey.

UIndy went 25-10 overall (15-3 GLVC), earning the 6-seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament in Allendale, Mich. The Hounds dropped third-seeded Northwood 3-1 in the first round before their season ended in a 3-2 loss versus Ferris State.

His 25 wins are the most by a first-year Greyhound volleyball coach, and his team became UIndy’s fourth to win 15 GLVC matches. He also took the Hounds to their seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and eighth overall.

Prior to the NCAA Tournament, the squad swept through the competition in the GLVC Tournament in Romeoville, Ill., with wins over Missouri S&T (3-0), Rockhurst (3-1) and Truman State (3-1). It marked the fourth conference title for the program, and third in the last five seasons.

They’re Meant to be Broken: The 2013 season saw major rewriting of individual and team records in the UIndy annals. Binkerd’s 1,512 assists finished fifth in the single-season Greyhound rankings, and she’s now finished in the top 10 each of her first three seasons. Her 4,476 career assists is second all-time, and she needs just 392 assists to move into the top spot. She averaged 11.28 assists per set this season, ranking first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Awards Season: Several Greyhounds earned individual accolades throughout the season on the conference, regional and national level. Junior setter Meghan Binkerd found her name on multiple award lists as season’s end, including AVCA’s All-America second team and All-Region, Daktronics, Inc., Honorable Mention All-America and All-Midwest First Team, and All-GLVC First Team. She also earned three GLVC Baden Offensive Player of the Week honors and placement on the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover AllTournament Team.

Anglemyer finished her stellar Greyhound career second in the conference and 20th in the nation with a .358 hitting percentage. That mark is sixth in the UIndy annals for single-season hitting. She’s also second all-time in UIndy history at .330 career hitting. Brown’s 428 kills this year ranks ninth all-time for a single season, and her 401 digs place her in the top 20.

Senior middle blocker Brittany Anglemyer earned AVCA All-America third team honors, and joined Binkerd on the AVCA All-Region team. She was tabbed to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region and All-GLVC second teams. The Elkhart, Ind., native was also named GLVC Baden Offensive Player of the Week for week 10.

Bruggeman and junior Kimberly Trojan both moved up the defensive record book. Bruggeman is 14th in the career records with 989 digs, and this year finished 16th in single-season with 434. Trojan is 18th with 830 career digs, and 17th single-season with 431.

Fellow senior Kenzie Bruggeman earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honors in week 11, as well as second team All-GLVC. Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Brown joined Anglemyer and Bruggeman on the All-GLVC second team, and was also named Daktronics All-Midwest Region second team.

Freshman Becca Lira’s 109 block assists (11th) and 120 total blocks (20th) both found spots in the single-season record books. Junior Julia Watkins is fifth all-time with 291 block assists and 11th with 323 total blocks. As a team, the 2013 squad finished in the top 15 in kills (12th, 1,834) and kills per set (14th, 13.69) in program history. They also notched the eighth-most assists with 1,725. Defensively, they placed seventh in the UIndy annals with 2,351 digs and fifth with 17.54 digs per set. The Hounds’ 420 block assists were also seventh-most in school history.
