First Fire Boats San Francisco’s first two fire boats were built in 1909, after the great fire of 1906. One of the boats was named after David D. Scannell, who served as the third San Francisco Sheriff, and later served as the SF Fire Department Chief. The other boat was named after Dennis T. Sullivan, who served as Chief of the SF Fire Department when the great earthquake and fire of 1906 struck San Francisco. Photos provided courtesy of Guardians of the City, San Francisco.

First women SF Police Officers By the 1840s, police matrons worked in most large city police departments serving female and children inmates. It wasn’t until 1915 that San Francisco named Mrs. Blanche Payson (in the top right corner) as the first Special Policewoman to work the PanamaPacific International Exposition. At the end of 1915, the San Francisco Police Department hired Kathryn Sullivan to serve as the first policewoman. Mrs. Sullivan started many campaigns to aide women and troubled youth. History of Firefighter Helmets The San Francisco Fire Department firefighter helmets have stayed consistent to this day. They still wear the traditional leather style helmet which was created in the 1820’s. For a short amount of time in the 1980’s, the Department switched to a plastic helmet that wasn’t well received and soon switched back to the traditional leather helmet in the late 80’s. The different helmet colors indicate different fire positions within the company. Photo provided courtesy of Danielle Moreno, SFPCU.

First Mounted policemen In 1874, San Francisco’s first mounted policemen patrolled Golden Gate Park. The SFPD Park Station (photo on the bottom left) was the original headquarters for the mounted policemen. Later, in 1953 the horse stables located in the back of the station became San Francisco Police Credit Union’s headquarters. The photo above shows mounted policemen at the old Mission Station located on 17th Street near Treat Street. Photos provided courtesy of SF Police Credit Union, photo collection, SFPL’s San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Library.

History of ems The first nationally recognized curriculum for EMS–emergency medical technician–ambulance (EMT-A)–was published in 1969, soon after the first class of EMT’s began to develop. Graduates of the first paramedic class at Stanford University Medical Center are seen in the photo below on the left. The ambulance in the photo on the left is the Criterion model which was built in 1974 to meet the Federal DOT Criteria for modern ambulance design. Photos provided courtesy of Robert Shepard.

The Journey to motorized fire engines The Van Buren fire apparatus (lower left corner) was one of the first to be used to battle the great fire of 1849. It just so happened that when the fire occurred, it was waiting to be shipped to the gold mines and immediately took action to aid the city. That afternoon, a resolution was made to form San Francisco’s Fire Department. In 1863, the first steam fire engine was purchased but was far too heavy to be pulled by man and needed horsepower to operate it. Almost 50 years later, technology emerged with the first motorized fire engine (photo in the lower right corner) being tested in 1912.
