2015 Quincy Bible Institute th th nd February 8 , 15 , and 22 / 4:00-6:00 PM St. James Lutheran Church
Guest Speaker: Tim Hetzner, Lutheran Church Charities Session 1: “Three Days Three Nights: How Can That Be?” (4:00-4:50)
If Jesus was crucified on Friday and the tomb was empty on Sunday, how could He have been in the heart of the earth for three days and nights? Tim will answer these “apparent” contradictions in Gospels and demonstrate how, with proper historical background, they disappear!

Session 2: “Sharing the Mercy and Compassion of Christ” (5:10-6:00)
“We are in hard economic times—times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us to share the mercy and compassion of Christ! The door is wide open for the Church to be what the Church can and should be. Jesus showed us by His life that we are to be the church that “does feet" (John 13). Some say they would gladly do compassion ministry if only there were enough funding, but it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example.
Carry-in to follow at 6:00pm… bring a dish to pass! Sectional Speaker: Pastor Mike Grieve
Sectional Speaker: Pastor Mike Fieberkorn
Sectional Speaker: Pastor Les Dumer
By definition, what is a sermon, and what does the word “preach” mean? What makes a sermon good, bad, or just downright ugly? What should you, the baptized, expect to hear in every sermon without exception…and what should you say to the pastor if you do not hear it? Come and hear the central doctrine that must, without exception, appear in every sermon, and why it must appear. Evaluate some sermon samples, and discern why they are good or bad. How to listen to a sermon will also be discussed.
When it comes to understanding God's work as Creator, the discussion is often reduced to a mere discussion of what happened "in the beginning." While important, this is only part of the story and overlooks a fuller discussion of God's ongoing care for us and all of creation. Divine providence (God's provision) is an often neglected topic. This session will take a look at God's providence from the beginning of time to eternal life, focusing especially on our own role in God's provision through our determination to be a people who pray and obey our Lord.
Walk with a parish pastor through Walther’s theses on “Church and Ministry.” Pastor Dumer studied these theses in the early 60’s during his time at Seminary. Recently LCMS President Matthew Harrison released a study edition of this work. Pastor Dumer will demonstrate how these theses are consistent with the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions and how they readily apply to our church life today. He will encourage all clergy and laity to become acquainted with them so they can guide ministry in the parish.
