Louis Levine, who led Rutgers gymnastics to the NCAA Regionals in 2014, is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights. The 2015 season will be his seventh overall in Piscataway as the program transitions to the Big Ten Conference. In guiding RU to a break-through season, Levine earned both East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Coach of the Year and the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Northeast Region Head Coach of the Year. Rutgers shattered nearly every record under Levine in 2014 including six of the top 10 scores in school history, with a program-high 196.225 on Senior Day. The season was highlighted by the team’s appearance at the NCAA Regionals in Athens, Ga., qualifying with a program-best RQS of 195.340. The trip marked the program’s first showing since 2007 and the first time under the new format. The Scarlet Knights broke two event records as well, recording program-bests on vault (49.200) and floor exercise (49.325). In correlation to the rising scores, Rutgers brought in seven weekly conference honors on the season, with at least two in each of the three categories. Six different gymnasts picked up 11 All-EAGL accolades and 12 earned All-Scholastic Team recognition. RU picked up a tie for third at EAGL Championships (195.275), the best placement and score in school history at the meet. Additionally, RU went 17-5 head-to-head in the regular season with three wins over ranked opponents. Under Levine’s leadership, Alexis Gunzelman finished her career by becoming the first all-arounder in school history to qualify for NCAA Nationals. She was first Scarlet Knight to reach the national level since Courtney Turner in 2002 (floor exercise). Gunzelman also earned her third Team MVP and first-team all-league five times for her performance as a senior. In 2013, Rutgers continued its growth, recording four of its top six scores at the time. The highlight of the 2013 season came on Senior Day when Rutgers notched the then-program-record 195.975 to win a quad meet. The mark shattered the previous high of 195.400 set back in 2000. Levine sent four individual competitors to the NCAA Regionals. Under Levine, Luisa Leal, who missed most to the 2012 season, was awarded EAGL Team MVP. The junior’s highlight of the season came in the March 8 meet at Towson where she broke her own school all-around record with a 39.500 to win EAGL Gymnast of the Week. Leal placed at least tied for first in every event, notching a career-high 9.950 score on the floor exercise. In his first season as head coach, Levine led the squad to a 13-11 record. The team had its best performance of the season at the EAGL Championships, notching a score of 193.850. Under Levine, Gunzelman qualified for NCAA Regionals as an individual. She also earned a First Team All-EAGL All-Around spot and a fifth-place finish at the EAGL Championships, the highest placing ever by a Scarlet Knight at that event at the time. With Levine’s guidance, Danielle D’Elia, Gunzelman and Jenna Zito picked up Second Team All-EAGL Floor honors, Gunzelman earned Second Team Bars and Alyssa Straub was recognized with Second Team All-Around accolades. Academically, 11 gymnasts earned Scholastic All-America awards from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). In his three prior seasons on the Rutgers staff under coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton, the Scarlet Knights achieved great success. The 2011 squad established a school-record for victories in a season with a 19-8 overall mark and enjoyed its then-highest-ever finish and score (fifth and 193.625) in the EAGL Championships. Three gymnasts -D’Elia, Zito and Leal - earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals, marking the program’s first representation in the regionals since 2007. Levine helped coach three gymnasts to All-EAGL honors, including Leal who was named the EAGL Rookie of the Year in her first season “On the Banks.” As a team, the Scarlet Knights improved their regional qualifying score to 194.740, improving from the previous year’s score of 194.350. Floor exercise proved to be the most successful event of the season, with RU posting a 49.005 RQS and breaking the then-school-record 49.250. The team also saw success on vault, posting a 49.100, which now stands as the second-best score in school history. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. Levine oversaw all aspects of Michigan’s recruiting operations and helped organize the program’s operating budget. Levine is no stranger to the Big Ten, as he competed on the vault during his time at Michigan where he helped guide the Wolverines to a pair of Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000 and the 1999 NCAA Championship. He was a two-time recipient of the Coaches Appreciation Award. Levine received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2002 and Master’s from the American InterContinental University Business School in 2006. A decorated gymnast, Levine attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J. He currently resides in nearby Springfield, N.J.

Rutgers Set for Home Opener RU enters the meet after posting its sixth-highest balance beam score in program history last Saturday at Illinois, totaling a 48.950 mark. Rutgers is tied for 15th nationally in beam with a 48.700 team average through two meets. Three Scarlet Knights totaled a 9.800 or higher in the event last week, led by a team-best 9.850 from junior Jenna Williams. Classmate Claudia Salinas posted a 9.825 and senior Anastasia Halbig added a 9.800 during the impressive rotation. Senior Luisa Leal and sophomore April Baker also performed well at Illinois, as Leal posted a 9.825 on vault while Baker contributed a 9.800 score on floor exercise. RU improved its team score to 192.775 Nebraska enters the meet after defeating Penn State, 197.125-196.025, last Saturday at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb. The team score is the highest posted by a Big Ten team through two weeks. Brockport recorded a 189.100 score en route to a victory against Springfield College, while Southern Connecticut posted a season-high mark of 189.850 during its home opener against Brown, Bridgeport and Rhode Island during weekend action. Louis Levine Q&A On team’s improvement at Illinois meet: “I thought vault was good for the second week in a row and we were really great on beam. We didn’t get what we wanted on floor exercise or bars, and that’s a work in progress, but overall there was a step forward from the season opener.” On what has made vault and beam RU’s top events early on: “There’s been a consistency in both events day-in and day-out. There’s been a lot of battle on the team to get into those events, and we have eight or nine girls that can execute a 9.800 or higher in those routines. When you have to fight for your spot every day, you get more consistent and you become more confident.” On competing at two Big Ten venues to start the season: “Going to those places is a new experience for our program, but in the end, the equipment is the same anywhere. I don’t think the programs we are competing against have anything to do with what’s going on out there to start the season. We’re going up against top-10 teams, and that’s just part of being in the Big Ten. We’re worried about stepping up our game and getting more consistent in all four of our events, especially bars and floor.” On returning home: “It’s always exciting for your first home meet. Being on the road, it’s just not your crowd. So we don’t get to feed off

the energy of the fans on the road. The team is looking forward to it. And with classes beginning, it’s nice that you get to stay home and not worry about the travel as the semester starts. We’re excited and it will be a fun time with a huge crowd.” On starting well in the classroom: “It’s really important. We talk about our academics a lot and the expectations are high for the whole team to exceed not just in the gym, but in the classroom as well. It’s also nice to get back into a routine. Winter break can throw things off a bit, but now they can get back in their routine with classes and everything else.” Rutgers Tallies 192.775 at No. 9 Illinois Securing the sixth-best team balance beam score in program history with a 48.950, Rutgers gymnastics concluded its season-opening road trip with a 192.775 score Saturday inside Huff Hall on the campus of Illinois. The ninth-ranked Fighting Illini took first in the meet with a 196.175. “We showed a lot of improvement today, but have to keep working to get better each time out,” head coach Louis Levine said. “The performances on vault and beam were what we were looking for early in the season. Those events are carrying us now, as we have to catch up on the other two.” RU performed best in the fourth rotation on balance beam, with three Scarlet Knights scoring a 9.800 or higher in the event. Rutgers was led by a team-best 9.850 from junior Jenna Williams, while classmate Claudia Salinas anchored with a 9.825. Senior Anastasia Halbig produced a 9.800, senior Luisa Leal added a 9.775 and freshman Elizabeth Groden landed a career-best 9.700 score. “It was an outstanding beam lineup today,” Levine said. “It was great to see us finish the meet strong.” Williams also led Rutgers in its opening rotation on uneven bars with a 9.775. Halbig produced a 9.725 and senior Emma Hoffman scored a 9.700. RU landed all six routines in the event to finish with a 47.925 total. Rutgers recorded a 48.775 on vault, with Leal producing the team’s highest individual total of 9.825 during the second rotation. Junior Nicolette Wilson and freshman Sahara Gipson each contributed a 9.775, with sophomore April Baker adding a 9.725 in the event. Baker continued her strong night for Rutgers in its third event on floor exercise, posting a 9.800. Sophomore Charly Santagado also landed a 9.750 to help the Scarlet Knights secure a 47.125 in the event.
