TONY VITTORIO HEAD COACH /// 17th SEASON

2009 A-10 COACH OF THE YEAR Under head coach Tony Vittorio’s leadership, University of Dayton baseball has elevated into a program which consistently competes for conference titles and fields players whom represent Flyer baseball at the professional level. Since arriving in 2000, Vittorio oversaw the construction of the new Time Warner Cable Stadium, won the program’s first conference title, coached eight MLB Draft picks – including two major-league-level pitchers – and made seven conference postseason appearances. Vittorio was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding Dayton to the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a program-high 38 wins. Dayton’s last postseason was the Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance in 2014 following a 24-win season. The Flyers finished sixth in the conference and picked up a number of postseason individual awards. Coach Vittorio picked up his 400th career win at UD on April 13 with a 9-5 win over Rhode Island.

Vittorio surpassed the 500 career win mark during a historic 2009 campaign in which the team also broke a number of long-standing UD records including wins (38), batting average (.332), hits (665), runs scored (448) and home runs (77). His 500th career victory came on April 24, 2009 in a 5-3 come-from-behind win at Fordham. Despite the apparent evidence of recent success, Vittorio would give many reasons why those numbers represent a starting point rather than a destination for a program that had only one winning season in the decade prior to his arrival.

HONORARY FLYER CAMERON NEAL During the 2013 season, the Dayton Baseball program announced the addition of Cameron Neal to its family. Cameron was a local boy that battled a brain tumor. He was partnered up with the Flyers through the Friends of Jaclyn foundation. What started out as a young boy meeting with a few players has blossomed into a tight-knit relationship that not only benefitted Cameron, but the players as well. With his own locker and uniform, Cameron was seen at as many of the games as he could attend. He was not part of just a community service project, but truly a member of the Dayton Baseball team. Cameron lost his battle this past fall and is the inspiration behind the #Cam10 hashtag that the team is using as its motto this season. FLYERS ADD CYPRET TO STAFF The Dayton Baseball coaching staff added Ryan Cypret for the 2016 season. A native of Ohio and a graduate of Ohio State University, Cypret joined UD from Western Michigan, where he helped the Broncos post the second-highest fielding percentage in school history. While playing at OSU, Cypret was a two-time team captain and a threeyear starter.

FLYERS PICKED TO FINISH 11TH IN A-10 The Atlantic 10 released their 2016 preseason poll and picked Dayton to finish 11th in the conference this season. Saint Louis was tabbed to take home the regular season title with seven first-place votes, followed by VCU (four first-place votes), and Rhode Island (two first-place votes). The Flyers finished 12th last season.
