2016 Big South Football TOPPING THE CHARTS Charleston Southern and Liberty sit atop the league standings at 2-0. CSU is 2-0 in Big South action for the second straight year and fourth time overall, while Liberty is 2-0 in conference for the first time since 2014 and eighth time during its Big South tenure. That season was the last time the Flames opened league play 3-0. CSU will look to start 3-0 for the third time in four years in Week 10. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN EXTENDS LEAGUE WIN STREAK TO 11 Charleston Southern has won 11 consecutive Big South games, tied for the second-longest conference win streak in league history. The record is 16, set by Liberty from 2006-09. The Bucs’ streak includes five straight home Big South wins, as well as six consecutive road conference victories -- the second-longest Big South road win streak in the league record book. FIRE BALL Liberty amassed 681 yards of offense this past Saturday in its 52-28 victory over Monmouth, the second-highest total in a Big South game and sixth-highest overall offensive output in Big South history. The Flames gained 331 yards on the ground, and 350 in the air to become just the third program in league annals with 300 rushing yards and 300 passing yards in the same game. MAXWELL HOUSE Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is 86 rushing yards away from becoming the Big South’s all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks. He is second with 1,700 and approaching the career record of 1,785 that is held by VMI’s TIM MAYPRAY. Meanwhile, Maxwell has tied the Big South record for most games with 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in the same game following his 202-passing, 122-rushing effort against Kennesaw State this past Saturday. Maxwell’s six career 100-yard rushing games are tied with Maypray for most all-time among Big South QBs, and Maxwell’s five career 100yard rush / 100-yard pass games are a Big South career mark as well. WHARTON SCHOOL OF TACKLING Monmouth LB BRENDON WHARTON recorded 21 tackles this past Saturday at Liberty (11 solo, 10 assisted), the Big South’s first 20-tackle game since 2014. He is the ninth different player with a 20-tackle effort, and his 21 stops were the second-most in a conference game. LLLLLOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGG PLAYS Charleston Southern QB ROBERT MITCHELL had a 78-yard rushing touchdown this past Saturday against Presbyterian, the second-longest rush from scrimmage by a QB in Big South history. Also on Saturday, Liberty RB TODD MACON scored on a 76-yard TD pass against Monmouth -- the thirdlongest pass reception by a RB in league annals. Lastly, Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL threw TD passes of 64 and 70 yards vs. Kennesaw State -- the second time this season he has completed two passes of at least 60 yards in the same game.

CHASING CHASTON Kennesaw State RB CHASTON BENNETT became just the second running back in Big South history with 100 receiving yards in a game this past Saturday with 110 at Gardner-Webb. Bennett has scored seven touchdowns in the last three games -- joining Charleston Southern’s MIKE HOLLOWAY as the only players this season with three consecutive multi-TD performances. AMBUSH MARKETING Monmouth WR DARREN AMBUSH became the first Big South player since 2014 with 200 receiving yards in a game, as he totaled 210 on seven receptions at Liberty this past Saturday. His total is tied for the sixth-highest single-game receiving output in league history, and it was his second game this season with more than 200 all-purpose yards. LIBERTY FIRST TEAM WITH 50 BIG SOUTH VICTORIES Liberty’s 36-21 win at Kennesaw State in Week 8 was the Flames’ 50th Big South victory, becoming the first program in the league’s 15-year history to win 50 conference games. Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern are for third with 32 league victories (former member Coastal Carolina is second at 44). Liberty is now 51-19 all-time in Big South contests ( =72.9 percent). BLOCK PARTY Monmouth leads the nation with eight blocked kicks this season, which ties the Big South single-season record that was first established by Presbyterian in 2009. The Hawks blocked a kick in five of six games from Week 2-7, including a Big South single-game record four at Delaware State in Week 2, with MIKE BASILE recording two of the deflections. The Hawks blocked two punts, one field goal and one PAT attempt to break the old league record of three set by VMI in 2004 and matched by Gardner-Webb in 2009. Basile was responsible for the FG and PAT blocks, and is the first Big South player with two blocked kicks in a game since Liberty’s FRANCIS BAH in 2012.

2016 Big South Football RANK AND FILE With Charleston Southern’s appearance in the national polls this week, the Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 73 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 season (Oct. 24). The Buccaneers are ranked No. 9 in the FCS Coaches poll, No. 9 in the STATS ranking, and No. 9 in the Hero Sports Media poll. CALLING IN THE CALVERY Liberty freshman QB STEPHEN CALVERT is the first freshman in Big South history with two 3-TD pass games in a season, as he threw three scores this past Saturday and 4 TDs in Week 5. He is 3-0 as the Flames’ starting quarterback and is 72-of-101 passing ( =71.3 percent) for 901 yards and eight TDs with a 168.40 passing efficiency in that span. Calvert is the second frosh with two 300-yard passing games in a season. GEE-WIZ Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER, who opened the 2016 season as one of 34 FCS players named to the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List, became the 14th player in Big South history with 300 career tackles as he eclipsed the milestone this past Saturday against Kennesaw State. He is the fifth linebacker on the list and stands at 312 -- one away from entering the league’s all-time Top 10. Geter has accumulated 182 solo tackles, which is 5th all-time in the Big South record book, and 18 away from becoming the third player with 200 career solo stops. Meanwhile, Geter is 10th in conference annals with 33.0 TFL, and needs 5.0 TFL to match the Big South career TFL record among linebackers (38.0 - MARTY PATTERSON, Gardner-Webb), and with 10.5 career sacks, needs 3.5 sacks to equal the linebacker sack record of 14.0, which is held by MAURICE SIMPKINS (Coastal Carolina, 2003-05). DANTE’S D Kennesaw State DB DANTE BLACKMON, who intercepted a pass in three consecutive games during Weeks 4-6, leads the Big South in interceptions (6) and 13 passes defended (13) -- totals he has recorded in the past five outings alone. His six passes defended in Week 4 at Duquesne (three interceptions and three break-ups) were the second-highest single-game total in Big South history, and he posted four in Week 5 at Furman with one INT and three deflections. BURKS BUSTS THROUGH FOR BIG SOUTH RECORD Kennesaw State QB CHANDLER BURKS became the first quarterback in Big South history to score three rushing touchdowns in consecutive games when he achieved the feat in Weeks 5 and 6. He rushed for a touchdown in five straight contests, and his nine rushing scores are tied for the secondmost in a season by a Big South quarterback. Burks, who shares the Big South record for most career 3-TD rushing games by a QB with teammate TREY WHITE with two, needs one rushing score to become just the second quarterback with 10 in a season.

In Week 4, Charleston Southern RB MIKE HOLLOWAY became the 20th player to reach the 2,000 career rushing yard benchmark during the Monmouth game. Holloway is the league’s active career leading rusher with 2,254, which ranks 14th in league annals and 89 away from 13th. Chaney is at 2,175 (18th all-time) and is the first Monmouth Hawk among the Big South’s 2,000-yard rushers. Presbyterian’s DARRELL BRIDGES (1,984) is 16 rushing yards away from the threshold. MOVING THE CHAINS Monmouth RB LAVON CHANEY is the Big South’s career leader for most receptions by a running back with 80, as he broke the old record of 77 that was held by DE’ANGELO HENDERSON during Week 6. Chaney’s 671 career receiving yards are second-most among Big South RBs, and 59 away from Henderson’s record of 731. Meanwhile, Chaney has thrown for three touchdowns during his time in the Big South, tied with former Liberty WR ADRIAN HALL for the most TD passes by a non-quarterback. REG-GIE, REG-GIE Monmouth WR REGGIE WHITE JR. leads the Big South with 46 receptions, 5.8 per game and 572 receiving yards through eight contests. Last season in 11 games, White had 35 receptions for 432 yards. He has posted two 10-reception games this season, the most by a Big South player since Liberty’s DARRIN PETERSON had three in 2014. EXCEPTIONAL ESTES Gardner-Webb TE MIKE ESTES is the Big South’s all-time leading receiver among tight ends. He joined the Big South’s 100-reception club this past Saturday against Monmouth, and is 114 yards away from 2,000. Shells would become the 13th player with both career milestones once he reaches the yardage benchmark. Earlier this season, Shells and Kennesaw State WR JUSTIN SUMPTER were the first players since Liberty’s DARRIN PETERSON in 2014 with touchdown receptions in four consecutive games. BLOCK-N-BASILE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE leads the nation with three blocked kicks, which is tied for second-most in a single-season in Big South history. The record is four, set by Presbyterian’s CHETYUANE REEDER in 2008 and tied by Coastal Carolina’s MARCUS WILLIAMSON last season. Basile has four career blocked kicks, which is tied for third all-time in league annals. He is one away from moving into a tie for second. Former PC defensive standout and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL is the Big South career leader with nine blocked kicks. THREE’S COMPANY Charleston Southern has three active players with 1,000 career rushing yards, as DARIUS HAMMOND eclipsed the milestone in Week 4. With 1,164 career rushing yards, Hammond joins MIKE HOLLOWAY (2,254) and BEN ROBINSON (1,331) in the club. The three players have rushed for a combined 4,749 yards and 48 touchdowns on 740 carries -- a combined average of 6.42 yards per carry. KICKING PROBE Liberty kicker ALEX PROBERT became the first kicker in Big South history to make three field goals from at least 45 yards in the same game in Week 7 at Kennesaw State. He was a perfect 3-of-3 for the day, hitting from 47, 50 and 47 yards in the Flames’ win over the Owls. Probert is the third kicker in league annals to convert three times from 40+ yards in a contest. Meanwhile, he has two 50-yard field goals to his credit, becoming the second Big South freshman to achieve this feat in a campaign. HAMMING IT UP Charleston Southern’s DARIUS HAMMOND is second in Big South history with 578 career punt return yards, and is 56 away from breaking the league’s all-time record of 633 currently held by Coastal Carolina’s NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO. Hammond is challenging the Big South’s all-time mark for combined kick return yards. He is currently fourth with 2,362 and is 363 yards away from breaking the record of 2,724 held by Gardner-Webb’s J.J. HUBBARD. Meanwhile, Hammond is 375 yards shy from becoming just the eighth player in conference annals with 4,000 career all-purpose yards. MAGIC MIKE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE has recorded at least 10 tackles in 13 of his last 20 appearances, and has 272 career stops through 30 career games. He is 28 hits away from becoming the 15th Big South player with 300 in a career. Basile owns 174 career solo hits, which is eighth in the conference record book. He is second in the Big South this season with 75 tackles and 9.4 per game, and is attempting to become just the third player in league annals to lead the conference in tackles in back-to-back years. In 2015, Basile became just the third defensive back to lead the Big South in total tackles and tackles per game as he finished with 119 and 10.8 per game, respectively. MAD MAX Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL’s 87-yard touchdown run against Presbyterian in Week 6 was the longest rush from scrimmage by a quarterback in Big South history, bettering the old record of 77 yards. Maxwell’s rush is the second-longest in league annals, but the longest against a Division I opponent. Meanwhile, Maxwell had a 74-yard completion for a TD to KYLE HORTON against the Blue Hose to become the first quarterback in the Big South record book with an 80-yard TD rush and 70-yard TD pass in the same game.

2016 Big South Football KHALIL’S GOT THE WILL Gardner-Webb RB KHALIL LEWIS leads the Big South with 817 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, and is second with 102.1 rushing yards per game. If he can maintain his current production, Lewis has a chance to become the first Runnin’ Bulldog EVER to lead the Big South in any of those three rushing categories. His 628 rushing yards through the first six games of the season were the most by a GWU rusher since the Big South began football in 2002, and the first to surpass 600 yards in the opening six games since JUANNE BLOUNT had 621 in 2013. Meanwhile, Lewis leads the nation with his 12 rushing scores, which is the most by a GWU player since PATRICK HALL had 12 in 2009. Lewis is on the cusp of becoming Gardner-Webb’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Blount in 2013 (1,040). BIRDS OF PREY Kennesaw State has gained more than 400 yards of offense in six consecutive games, tied for the fourth-longest streak in Big South history. The Owls, who are averaging 505.7 yards in that six-game span, are the lone Big South team to out-gain its opponent in each game this season. KSU owns a +830-yard differential over its opponents this season, an average of +118.6 yards per game. MAD MAX FURY ROAD Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is the leading rusher among FCS quarterbacks this season with 651 rushing yards on 111 carries (5.9 yards per rush), and is 49 away from becoming the first quarterback in Big South history with two 700-yard rushing seasons. His current total is seventh-most in a season by a conference QB, and based on his season average of 81.4 yards per game, is on pace to finish with 895 rushing yards -- which would be the third-highest single-season rushing total by a Big South quarterback. PUTTIN’ ON THE HICKS Liberty freshman FRANKIE HICKSON leads the Big South with a 32.3 kickoff return average, and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score in Week 7 at Kennesaw State. It is tied for the second-longest kickoff return TD in Big South history, and the longest return by a league freshman.

In addition, Liberty is the Big South’s record holder for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 73. Charleston Southern’s current streak of 44 conference games with a point scored is third-longest all-time, just ahead of PC’s active streak of 43 games. BIG SOUTH OFF TO ANOTHER SOLID START AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FCS FOES The Big South is 11-7 after 18 games against non-conference FCS opponents. Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the Big South is 63-29 ( =68.5 winning percentage) in regular-season competition and 68-34 ( =66.7) when including postseason games in that span. The Big South has posted at least a 60.0 winning clip in each of the previous three seasons. BUCS SET BIG SOUTH RECORD IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME CLASSIC Charleston Southern defeated former Big South member Coastal Carolina, 59-58 in double-overtime in Week 5, and the 117 combined points broke the conference single-game record. The previous mark was 107 points, which occurred three times. The Bucs’ win over the Chanticleers pushed the Big South to 12-13 all-time in games involving a ranked Big South team against a nationally-ranked non-conference opponent. CSU is now 3-1 against Coastal Carolina in such meetings. The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each honoree will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The Big South had its only finalist in 2013 when Coastal Carolina’s NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO was honored. LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW Charleston Southern RB MIKE HOLLOWAY became just the second Big South player in league history -and the first in a conference game -- to record a touchdown rush of at least 70 yards and TD reception of 60+ yards in the same game when he did so in Week 4 at Monmouth. He first scored on a 75-yard run, then added a 63-yard catch-and-run on a swing pass into the end zone. Gardner-Webb’s DAVID MONTGOMERY was the first to achieve this feat with his 74-yard TD run and 73-yard touchdown catch against Southern Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009.

Oct. 24 - Weekly Report 2016 Big South Football • 7

2016 Big South Football DAILY DOUBLE Charleston Southern has held its last two Big South opponents to less than 10 points (7 - Monmouth, 3 - Presbyterian). The feat is the seventh such occurrence in league history, and the fourth straight year it has been accomplished. The Bucs were the last Big South squad with this distinction, as CSU set the record of three consecutive games holding conference foes to under 10 points last season. BEWARE OF THE DOG In Weeks 5 and 6, Gardner-Webb became just the third team in Big South history to hold consecutive opponents to 3 points-or-less, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs blanked Benedict in Week 5 and held Presbyterian to a field goal in Week 6. GWU joined Coastal Carolina (three straight games in 2014) and Liberty (two in 2011) as the only teams to achieve this feat. MONMOUTH’S MIKE BASILE ADDED TO FCS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE was one of four midseason additions to the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Year Watch List on Oct. 4, and joins Charleston Southern’s ANTHONY ELLIS among the official Big South candidates for the 2016 award. It is the fourth consecutive year that the Big South has multiple candidates for the national defensive award, and fifth time overall. HAMMOND NAMED CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD For the sixth consecutive year, a Big South player opened the season as an official candidate for the FCS National Offensive Player of the Year Award, as Charleston Southern RB DARIUS HAMMOND is among the initial 22 candidates for the top individual award in FCS. He is the first Charleston Southern player to earn this distinction. BIG SOUTH POSTS UNDEFEATED NON-CONFERENCE WEEK FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR The Big South Conference went 5-0 during Week 5, the third consecutive year that the league did not lose a non-conference game in the same week, based on a minimum five games. Last season, the Big South posted a 7-0 record during Week 3, while the 2014 campaign saw the league go 6-0 against nonconference foes in Week 3 as well. CSU’S PUNT RETURN GAME SETS GOLD STANDARD Charleston Southern returned seven punts for a Big South single-game record 248 yards against Kentucky State on Sept. 3. The Bucs shattered the old mark of 159 punt return yards set by Coastal Carolina against CSU in 2010. In fact, Charleston Southern’s punt return yardage from that game would rank as the 17th-most IN A SEASON in league annals. CSU averaged a league-record 35.4 yards per punt return against Kentucky State, and became the first team in conference history to have TWO players with 100 punt return yards in the same game -- KELAN FRAISE (Big South-record 126 yards) and DARIUS HAMMOND (122). GOOD WORK YOUNG MAN The Big South Conference was once again represented among the national candidates for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Liberty’s DEXTER ROBBINS was among the 165 candidates from every subdivision and classification. Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER was a 2015 nominee. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010. BIG SOUTH AND ASUN CONFERENCE ESTABLISH FCS MEMBER PARTNERSHIP The Big South Conference and ASUN Conference (ASUN) announced on Sept. 13 a unique FCS member partnership that will strengthen both leagues and strategically reinforce the future of Big South football. The partnership, which takes effect immediately, guarantees a football “home” within the Big South Conference for ASUN members that play scholarship football. Under the arrangement, current or future ASUN Conference members that sponsor scholarship football will automatically be admitted as associate football members into the Big South Conference, so long as they are based in a predetermined geographical footprint that spans the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. INSTANT CLASSIC - CHARLESTON SOUTHERN’S MEMORABLE OPENER Big South preseason favorite Charleston Southern was the first league member to appear in the third edition of the national season-opening FCS Kickoff, and the Buccaneers did not disappoint in their 24-17 overtime loss at #1/1 North Dakota State. CSU held the Bison scoreless in the first quarter and led 3-0 until NDSU tied it with a field goal to end the opening half. The Bucs led twice in the game, and rallied to tie the game at 17-17 with a chance to win in regulation. It was the first overtime game in the history of the Fargodome, and marked Charleston Southern’s second consecutive game against the nation’s No. 1-ranked FCS program and third in a seven-week span (dating back to last year).
