February 14, 2018 Dear Friend & Supporter:        ________________

While winter brings most of us excitement about the holidays and the ski season, it’s important to remember that for some, the arrival of winter brings a struggle to survive.

There are more than 3,500* individuals experiencing homelesssness in Denver. Some of these individuals have family they will not see this holiday. Some will bounce from motel to shelter to, sadly, a sleeping bag on the street as they battle daily to find a place to rest and escape the freezing temperatures.

The Denver VOICE will provide an opportunity for nearly 100 homeless individuals to avoid the cold this winter. With an office that offers warmth, coffee, and companionship during the cold days, and the opportunity for our vendors to earn a vital income, the Denver VOICE provides a community and an income for individuals to break free of the cycle of poverty. Since 1996, the Denver VOICE has provided a voice for individuals experiencing homelessness. This year, we served more than 125 vendors, including Willie, who shared his thoughts about the VOICE on the back of this letter. This VOICE is more than a hand-up—it’s a community, a connection to society for people typically left on the fringes. THIS COMMUNITY AND WARMTH ARE ONLY PROVIDED WITH YOUR HELP. Your 2016 gift goes directly to the Denver VOICE programming. Our administrative costs are less than 1% of our budget, which means that your gift makes a direct impact on the lives of our vendors. Just $5 puts one homeless person to work at the VOICE. Imagine what more can do. THANK YOU, and Happy Holidays, from all of us at the VOICE. In  the  darkest  year  of  my  life  when  I  couldn’t  lead  the  pack  with  the  young  bulls,  falling   to  the  back  and  trailing  after  the  pack.  Having  to  be  on  my  guard  24/7,  and  never  getting   any  rest.  Constantly  tired.       The  one  positive  constant,  the  light  in  the  dark.  A  beacon  and  safe  haven.     An  oasis  and  safe  watering  hole—the  Denver  VOICE.       Where  warm  hellos  and  how  are  you  doings  bounce  off  my  chest  as  I  walk  through  the   door,  to  newly  found  friends  and  acquaintances,  surrounding  me  in  a  blanket  of  warmth   and  safety.       The  Denver  VOICE  is  my  home  to  rest,  to  let  my  guard  down  because  it  is  peaceful  and   so  very  tranquil.       I  am  reenergized  and  pumped  with  new  life  daily.  I  thank  God  for  the  Denver  VOICE  and   its  staff,  my  new  friends  and  companions.     No  frowns  or  fake  smiles  just  genuine  compassion  for  the  plight  that  I  endure  now  until  I   can  stand  on  my  own  two  feet  again.     If  not  for  my  job  with  the  Denver  VOICE  my  car  would  have  been  surrendered.     The  money  earned  from  vending  makes  it  easier  for  me  pay  my  car  insurance  and  helps   with  the  cost  of  a  $170  prescription,  one  of  the  five  medications  I  take.  On  the  occasion   that  a  reader  can  be  generous,  I  treat  myself  to  a  sit  down  meal.       I  especially  want  to  thank  the  readers  who  purchase  my  papers  faithfully,  with  warm   smiles,  handshakes,  sincere  thanks,  and  heartfelt  hugs.  These  are  the  people  that   actually  thank  me  for  being  there  to  sell  the  Denver  VOICE.  Thank  you  all  for  your   support.     Sincerely,     Willie  Smith
