WASHINGTON vs. RUTGERS • HUSKY ST ADIUM • SEPT. 3, 2016 • 11:00 A.M. PT (PAC-12 NETWORK) 100 WINS: With the 2014 victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup, UW head coach Chris Petersen reached his 100th career victory. At the time, it put his record at 100-17, meaning that it took him 117 career games to reach his 100th victory. Only four coaches in major college history did it faster: Gil Dobie (North Dakota State, UW, Navy, Cornell): 108 games George Woodruff (Penn): 109 games Bud Wilkinson (Oklahoma): 111 games Fielding Yost (Neb., Kansas, Stanford, San Jose St., Michigan): 114 games Chris Petersen (Boise State, Washington): 117 games Knute Rockne (Notre Dame): 117 games Additionally, Petersen’s 117 games were fewer than any ACTIVE FBS coach required to make it to 100 victories. COACHING STAFF: In the first three years of the Chris Petersen Era at Washington, there are been just two changes to the Huskies’ full-time assistant coacing staff, both coming this past offseason. Seven of the nine assistants are in their third season at UW under Petersen (one of which was a holdover from the prior staff). Of the nine full-time coaches on the 2016 staff, six came to the UW from Boise State along with Petersen after 2013. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen’s staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordinator. Kwiatkowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 seasons prior to UW coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons at BSU. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersen’s Broncos staff during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. He coached running backs his last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State for Petersens’ last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana, he continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen’s DBs coach in Boise the last two years there, having spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Lake added co-defensive coordinator to his title this offseason. Tight ends coach Jordan Paopao is entering his fourth season in that role, having worked as a Husky GA the previous two. The two newcomers to the Washington staff are not entirely new. UW alum Ikaika Malloe, who lettered as a Husky from 1993 to 1996, once worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. He joined the staff after last season, coming to Seattle from Utah State. New wide receivers coach Bush Hamden was an offensive quality control assistant for the Huskies in 2015. A former Boise State quarterback, he worked at Davidson, Arkansas State, Florida, Sacramento State, Maryland and Colorado before moving to Montlake. Three of Washington’s four graduate assistant coaches are in their second season: former Boise State receiver Kirby Moore, former Stanford defensive back Terrence Brown and former Kansas State linebacker Hansen Sekona. The newcomer is former North Carolina offensive lineman Kyle Jolly. THE YOUNG AND THE OLD: Washington was one of the country’s youngest teams in 2015, as the UW roster included 52 freshman (both true and redshirt freshmen) and 24 sophomores, as compared to just 13 seniors. Not surprisingly, the Huskies returned a great deal of experience in 2016. In fact, not counting specialists (kickers, punters, long snappers, returners), a total of 33 different Huskies have started at least one game in a Washington uniform, 18 on offense and 15 on defense. However, the 2016 roster still includes just 13 seniors to go along with 41 freshmen and redshirt freshmen, as well as 28 sophomores. THE DEFENSE: Washington’s defense was the strongest it has been in years in 2015, leaving a standard for this season that will be a challenge to match. Last year, the Husky defense finished first in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, allowing just 247 points, or 18.8 per game, the best average by the UW since

TEAM NOTES 1996 (18.4 per game). The Huskies gave up 103 fewer points in 2015 than in 2014 (though, the UW played one more game in 2014). The Dawgs also led the conference in total defense (351.8 yards per game), opponent first downs (19.1 per game) and red-zone defense (79.5 percent). In the red zone, UW opponents managed just 17 touchdowns in 39 attempts (43.6 percent), best in the conference. THE OFFENSE: Washington’s offense finished last season on a high. Over the three-game win streak that wrapped up the 2015 campaign, the Huskies posted 52, 45 and 44 points, an average of 47.0 per game. Over the last four games of the season, the Huskies amassed 2,052 yards of total offense, or an average of 513.0 yards per game. Over the final three (Oregon State, Washington State, Southern Miss), the Huskies racked up 807 rushing yards (269.0 per game) and completed 55-of-75 passes (.733) for 698 yards, four touchdowns and just one interception. 1,000-YARDERS: Prior to the 2007 season, Washington running backs had compiled 11 1,000-yard seasons in the school’s long history. Since then, Washington has had a back reach 1,000 yards seven out of the last nine years. Here’s a look at those seven recent 1,000-yard seasons: 2007 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2015

HOME vs. NON CONFERENCE: Washington has been very tough to beat in home, non-conference games over the last several decades. Going back to (and including) the 1981 season, the Huskies have posted a 62-13 record against nonPac-10/Pac-12 foes in Husky Stadium. Those 13 losses have come to Nebraska (2010), LSU (2009), BYU (2008), Oklahoma (2008), Ohio State (2007), Notre Dame (2005), Fresno State (2004), Nevada (2003), Air Force (1999), Nebraska (1997), Notre Dame (1995), Colorado (1989) and Oklahoma State (1985). Notable wins wins during that stretch include victories over No. 19 Boise State last season, No. 22 Boise State in 2007, No. 11 Michigan in 2001, No. 4 Miami in 2000, and No. 12 Nebraska in 1992. Prior to the 2004 loss to Nevada, Washington hadn’t lost a home game to a non-league opponent since falling to Air Force, 31-21, on September 18, 1999. The Huskies had won 10 such games before that Nevada loss. The UW is 13-2 over its last 15 home, non-league games, with an 11-game winning streak. HUSKIES vs. THE BIG TEN: Washington holds a 46-44-2 record all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, a record that includes an 0-2 mark against Penn State (though the Nittany Lions were not members of the Big Ten at the time of their games against the UW) and 4-5-1 vs. Nebraska, also obviously not a Big Ten member at the time of any of those games. Washington has played all 12 Big Ten teams, other than Rutgers, but have faced an Big Ten opponent only four times since 2003 (the UW played Indiana in ‘03, Ohio State in ‘07, and Illinois in 2013-14). The Huskies have played Big Ten teams seven times in bowl games since 1990 (not counting Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl in 2010): Iowa in the 1990 Rose Bowl, Michigan in the 1992 and 1993 Rose Bowls, Page 4

Iowa in the 1995 Sun Bowl, Michigan State in the 1997 Aloha Bowl, Purdue in the 2001 Rose Bowl and Purdue in the 2002 Sun Bowl. The Huskies went 4-3 in those games. Here’s the UW’s all-time record vs. current Big Ten teams: 7-4 vs. Illinois, 1-2 vs. Indiana, 3-3 vs. Iowa, 1-0 vs. Maryland, 5-7 vs. Michigan, 2-1 vs. Michigan State, 7-10 vs. Minnesota, 4-5-1 vs. Nebraska, 3-0 vs. Northwestern, 3-8 vs. Ohio State, 0-2 vs. Penn State, 7-2-1 vs. Purdue, 4-0 vs. Wisconsin. HOME OPENERS: The Huskies are 91-28-5 in home openers (whether the first game of the season or not), a percentage of .754. (Washington did not play any home games in the 1890 or 1893 seasons.) That mark includes a 28game streak of home-opener wins that ran from 1908 to 1935. Before falling to Air Force in the 1999 home opener, Washington had won 13 straight such games since falling to Oklahoma State on Sept. 7, 1985. The Huskies have won their last six home openers in a row, dating back to a loss to No. 11 LSU in the 2009 home opener. THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. In 2013 and 14, the Huskies didn’t face Utah or USC. Last year and in 2016, neither UCLA nor Colorado are on the UW schedule. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 199-65-3 (.751) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were 5-4 in such games in 2015. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 100 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 83-16-1 (.835) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 58-13-1 (.813) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. UW is 15-7 at home since the re-opening of Husky Stadium. ALASKA AIRLINES FIELD AT HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2016 season marks the 96th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 371-176-21 (.672).
