2016 SEASON IN REVIEW 3-9 overall, 2-7 Big Ten (6th – West Division) • Final Drive: The Fighting Illini got wins over Murray State, Rutgers and Michigan State in Lovie Smith’s first season as head coach, but dropped five of their last six games to finish 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten West to miss out on a bowl game for the second straight season. • Phillips Breaks Out: Senior DE Carroll Phillips had a monster year, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors after posting 20.0 TFLs and 9.0 sacks on the season, tied for the fifth and seventh-best totals in program history, respectively. He ranked second in the Big Ten sixth in the nation in TFLs per game (1.7), and fourth in the Big Ten and 24th in FBS in sacks per game (0.75).

• Fourth Down ‘D’: A stop on fourth-and-3 in the final seconds sealed the win over Michigan State. That’s something the Illini defense excelled at all season, as opponents converted just five of 16 fourth-down attempts (.313), best in the Big Ten and 10th-best in FBS.

• Elementary, Watson: During conference play, sophomore LB Tré Watson averaged 10.3 tackles per game to rank second in the B1G. In the last four games, he made 48 stops (12.0 tpg), including 16 vs. Michigan State and 15 vs. Iowa. For the season, Watson was second on the team and fifth in the Big Ten with 102 stops (8.5 tpg), and tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles. • Tackling Machine: Graduate transfer LB Hardy Nickerson averaged 8.9 tackles/game to rank fourth in the Big Ten. He had 353 career tackles (246 at Cal, 107 at Illinois), sixth-most among active FBS players. • Smoot Point: Senior DE Dawuane Smoot came on strong in conference play, averaging 1.44 TFLs per game to rank third in the Big Ten during league play. He finished his UI career ranked sixth in Illinois history with 36.5 career TFLs. • Jaylen Island: Junior CB Jaylen Dunlap had four PBUs in the win over Michigan State, tied for the fifth-most in a game in program history and the most by an Illini since 2002. He had nine PBUs in the last five games of 2016, 10 during Big Ten play (4th-most in the B1G) and 11 for the season (tied for 10th-most in a season in UI history). • Big Play Run Game: Illinois had five runs of 50+ yards this season, tied for 18th-most in the nation. Kendrick Foster had a pair of 56-yard TD runs against Murray State and added a 64-yard TD run against Michigan State, Ke’Shawn Vaughn had a 65-yard TD scamper vs. UNC and Reggie Corbin busted a 53-yard run at Rutgers. • Dual Threat: Junior RB Kendrick Foster (720 rush, 554 KOR) is one of only four players in the nation with at least 700 rushing yards and 500 kick return yards (Cal’s Khalfani Muhammad, SDSU’s Rashaad Penny & South Alabama’s Xavier Johnson). • Fresh Start: Illinois had 28 first-time starters during the 2016 season, the most in the nation, just ahead of Missouri (27). Included in that number were 13 freshmen (four true-freshmen and nine redshirt-freshmen). • Declining Penalties: The Illini cut down on penalties during the second half of the season, an issue that plagued the team early-on Through six games, Illinois averaged 8.7 penalties/game and 72.5 penalty yards/game, ranking last in the Big Ten in both categories. In the last six games, they averaged just 3.8 penalties/game and 34.0 penalty yards/game. • Hard Knox: Assistant Director of Athletics and Director of Football Operations Tim Knox was named 2016 Operations Director of the Year by Football Scoop, which is selected by prior winners of the award. His broad range of responsibilities includes the overall management of the football budget, team travel, and bowl game coordination. SIX ILLINI GARNER ALL-BIG TEN ACCOLADES Senior defensive end Carroll Phillips earned first-team All-Big Ten accolades from the media, the first Illini firstteamer since Whitney Mercilus and A.J. Jenkins in 2011. Phillip was an honorable mention honoree by the coaches. In addition, senior DE Dawuane Smoot earned third team honor from both voting groups, while four more Illini earned honorable mentioin recognition – senior LB Hardy Nickerson, senior C Joe Spencer, junior WR Malik Turner, and sophomore LB Tré Watson. Spencer also picked up his first Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honor.

2016 YEAR IN REVIEW FOUR ILLINI PARTICIPATE IN POST-SEASON ALL-STAR GAMES Four Illinois football players participated in senior all-star games – two to the Reese’s Senior Bowl, one to the East West Shrine Game and one to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl – in late January. The games, and workouts leading up to them, are used as a scouting tool for NFL teams and other professional football leagues.

ILLINI BOAST RECORD NUMBER OF ACADEMIC BIG TEN HONOREES...AGAIN • The Illinois football team set a program record for Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the fifth straight season, as 35 student-athletes were honored by the conference in 2016, the most in the Big Ten just ahead of Northwestern (34). A full list of all 35 Illini honorees can be found on page three. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. • In addition, eight Fighting Illini – Rob Bain, Zach Grant, Wes Lunt, Michael Martin, David Reisner, Joe Spencer, Mike Svetina and Tyler White – were named to the 2017 Hampshire Honor Society for achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study. Illinois’ eight honorees was the most in the Big Ten in 2017 and the fifth most among all FBS programs.

WALK-ONS EARN THEIR $$$ • Senior walk-on LS Michael Martin was surprised with a scholarship for his final season on Aug. 28. Martin, a Champaign, Illinois, native, earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in Dec. 2015 and is pursuing a master’s degree in the same field during his final year of football eligibility. • In all, three players on the current roster went from walk-on status to scholarship student-athlete – RB Nathan Echard, WR Zach Grant, and LS Michael Martin. LOVIE’S ILLINI • Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman named longtime NFL coach Lovie Smith as head football coach on March 7, 2016. Smith is the 25th head football coach at Illinois and is the first African-American head football coach in program history. • The season-opening victory over Murray State was the first college win as head coach for Smith, who is back in college football for the first time since the 1996 Florida Citrus Bowl, when he was an assistant at Ohio State. Smith is coming off 19 years in the NFL, including the last 11 as head coach of the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He picked up his first Big Ten victory on Oct. 15 at Rutgers, 24-7 and his first Big Ten home victory on Nov. 5 vs. Michigan State, 31-27. • Smith led the Chicago Bears for nine seasons from 2004-12 and was 81-63 (.563), including three division titles, two NFC Championship Game appearances (2006 and 2010) and a berth in Super Bowl XLI. • The AP Coach of the Year in 2005, Smith’s 81 wins with Chicago are the third-most in Bears history. • Smith spent the past two years as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where the Bucs improved from two victories in 2014 to six wins in 2015. THE LOVIE EFFECT • Arrow Pointing Up: In seven home games, the Illini averaged 45,644 fans per game, an increase of 10.4 percent over 2015. Last season, Illinois averaged 41,342 fans with a high of 51,515 (vs. Ohio State 11/14/15). • Selling Out: Illinois welcomed a sellout crowd of 60,670 against North Carolina on Sept. 10, marking the first sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium since hosting Michigan on Nov. 12, 2011. It was the first non-conference sellout since hosting Arizona State on Sept. 12, 1987 (Capacity at the time was 70,060). • Big Opener: The crowd of 48,644 for the 2016 season-opener against Murray State marked Illinois’ best non-conference attendance since Sept. 17, 2011 against Arizona State (50,669) and was Illinois’ best home-opener attendance since Sept. 11, 2010 against Southern Illinois (52,217).

• The Illini had a season-low three penalties against Minnesota. • Illinois held Minnesota to a season-low 112 passing yards, also good for the Illini’s fewest passing yards allowed this season. • Redshirt-freshman PK Chase McLaughlin kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal. The field goal is tied for the fourth-longest in school history and the longest since Taylor Zalewski kicked a 54-yard score against Purdue on Nov. 17, 2012. • Freshman DB Stanley Green led the team with nine tackles. Green is the first true freshman to lead the Illini in tackles since Mike Svetina had 9.5 tackles against Northwestern on Nov. 24, 2012. • Junior DB Jaylen Dunlap had a career-high three pass breakups. Dunlap is the first player since Eaton Spence had three PBUs in a game on Nov. 15, 2014 vs. Iowa.

The four PBUs in a game is the most by an Illini since Alan Ball on Oct. 14, 2002 against Indiana. • Sophomore DB Tre Watson had a career-high 16 tackles. Watson’s previous careerhigh was 13 tackles against Purdue on Oct. 8. The 16 total tackles is tied for the most by an Illini this season. • Junior RB Kendrick Foster ran for a career-long 64-yard touchdown. The run was the second-longest of the season for the Illini behind Vaughn’s 65-yard run against North Carolina. • Foster ran for a career-high 146 rushing yards. He is the Ilini’s first 100-yard rusher against Michigan State since 2006. • With 2.5 TFLs, senior DL Duwaune Smoot moved into No. 8 in the Illini record book with 35.0 career TFLs.
