2 016 SEASON FOOTBALL OUACHITA vs. EAST CENTRAL: THE SERIES This series began in 1913 when Ouachita and Southeastern first encounter ended in a scoreless tie. Ouachita earned the first victory in the series the following year with a decisive 19-0 win. Southeastern’s first win came in October of 1952. The Tigers have a 30-18-4 advantage over the Storm. The two teams have one postseason meeting, with Ouachita winning the 1948 Texhoma Bowl by a final of 7-0. Since 1978, the Tigers are 11-4 at home versus Southeastern. The last time the Tigers lost to Southeastern at home was in October of 1999. Ouachita is 5-0 versus Southeastern since joining the GAC.

OUACHITA vs. HENDERSON: THE NUMBERS

At the team’s last meeting in Durant, senior running back Brandon Marks broke off a 14-yard TD run with 16 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 35-29 win. In last season’s meeting at Cliff Harris Stadium, the Tigers held off a 27-point comeback in the fourth quarter to win 42-40. Last week, Ke’Vontae Pope became the first player in GAC history to return a season-opening kickoff for touchdown. Pope’s 97 yard return was the longest of his career. In what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown for the Tigers, Pope returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of last season’s meeting. Kris Oliver led the GAC last week with 99 rushing yards and tied four other players with three touchdowns. Oliver now has 22 rushing touchdowns in 12 career games. He rushed for three TDs versus Southeastern in last year’s contest.

OUACHITA vs. EAST CENTRAL: 2015 RECAP The Ouachita Tigers improved to 2-0 in 2015, narrowly defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State 42-40. The Tigers withstood 20 straight points by the Storm in the fourth quarter and held on for their 12th straight conference win. Kris Oliver finished with three rushing touchdowns for the second straight game. Oliver got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a 43-yard scamper down the Storm sideline and gave Ouachita a 7-0 lead. Southeastern responded late in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown by Ronnie Green. A fumble on the hold led to a failed PAT attempt made the score 7-6 in favor of the Tigers. That special team’s mistake would prove crucial for the Storm late in the game. A three-yard touchdown run by Brandon Marks at the end of the first quarter gave the Tigers a 14-6 lead. Southeastern put together a 10 play, 73-yard touchdown drive to cut the Ouachita lead to one, 14-13. The Tigers answered with a 75-yard drive, highlighted by an 18-yard reception by tight end Johnathan Powell. The senior from Searcy, Ark. finished the night with a career-high four catches for 56 yards. Marks found the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the game. Leading 21-13 with just over two minutes left in the first half, Ouachita forced the Storm to turn over the ball on downs with back-to-back incompletions. With two minutes left in the half, a 22-yard run by quarterback Austin Warford put the Tigers on

the SE 49 yard line. Two plays later, Warford found an open Ke’Vontae Pope at the Storm one yard line for a first and goal. Kris Oliver ran it for his second touchdown of the half and the Tigers went to locker room with a 28-13 lead. The Tigers finished the first half with 233 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Warford had 133 yards on the ground, averaging 19 yards per carry. Oliver finished the half with 59 yards and Marks had 41. Southeastern started the third quarter with an 80-yard, 13 play drive. They moved all the way down to the Tigers one yard line, where the Tigers defensive line held strong on a fourth and goal, denying the scoring opportunity foe Southeastern. Both teams exchanged possessions in the quarter until 4:57 remained. The Tigers executed a 92-yard drive that was capped off by Oliver’s third touchdown run of the game. The Tigers now led 35-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Southeastern quarterback Ryan Polite went 4-4 for 42 yards on Southeastern’s second possession of the fourth quarter. His fourth completion found Kaymon Farmer in the end zone. Southeastern trailed 35-20 with 10:06 left to play in the game. The Tigers appeared to shut the door on a Storm comeback on the ensuing kickoff when Ke’Vontae Pope returned it for 90 yards up the middle for a score. Ouachita now led 42-20 and momentum seemed to be in their favor. A sack by Ouachita’s Tristan Bulice forced Southeastern into a three and out. Ouachita drove down to the Storm red zone once again, but this time, a sack and forced fumble was scooped up the Storm’s Thomas Curry and returned 75 yards for a touchdown. Trailing by 15, Southeastern recovered the onside kick attempt and moved through the air for 56 yards on two plays, finding the end zone on a 33-yard pass to Franky Okafor. Ouachita’s lead was cut to 42-34. Southeastern’s defense forced Ouachita into a three and out and moved the ball 84 yards on the ensuing drive for another touchdown, their fourth of the quarter. Down by two, the Storm’s two-point conversion attempt failed. Holding a 42-40 lead, the Tigers were unable to recover the onside kick attempt and Southeastern gained possession with 31 seconds left to play. After a 12-yard completion, defensive lineman John Rachal sacked Polite for a five yard loss. With the clock down to five seconds left in the game, Southeastern managed a nine yard completion in the middle of the field, but the receiver was immediately smothered by defensive back Alex Myres to end the game. Ouachita rushed for 309 yards in the game. Warford led the team with 135 yards. Oliver finished with 92 yards and three touchdowns. Marks had 73 yards and two touchdowns. Kendrick Henderson led all players 11.5 tackles and added two tackles for loss. Luke Holt finished 7.5 tackles and one tackle for loss.

TODD KNIGHT After 17 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 70 All-Great American Conference players in just five years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast eight consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in seven of eight of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 145 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections, 18 All-Conference selections and the Division II Special Teams Player of the Year. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
