2 016 SEASON FOOTBALL OUACHITA vs. NWOSU: THE SERIES Saturday night’s game marks only the ninth meeting between these two teams. Ouachita holds a 5-3 advantage in the series, winning the last four. Ouachita’s 55-3 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in 2012 snapped a three-game Rangers’ win streak. Since joining the GAC, Ouachita has outscored Northwestern 196-47. Ouachita’s average margin of victory in the last four games has been just over 37 points per game. This will be the Tigers fourth trip to Alva, Okla. Ouachita’s 41-10 win in 2014 at Alva was the Tiger’s first victory on the road against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Their record in Alva is currently 1-2.
OUACHITA vs. NWOSU: THE NUMBERS Downright offensive – Ouachita ranks first in the GAC averaging 500.3 yards of total offense per game. The Tigers are second in the GAC in scoring offense, averaging 42.7 points per game. On the flip side, Northwestern Oklahoma State is last in the conference in total defense and scoring defense, allowing 567.3 yards and 50.3 points per game.
OUACHITA vs. NWOSU: 2015 RECAP ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tigers (3-1) opened Saturday night’s game at Cliff Harris Stadium with 21 straight points and closed the night by outscoring Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-3) 27-0 in the second half for a 55-13 final. Running back Kris Oliver scored three touchdowns for the third time this season and amassed 254 yards of total offense. Ouachita gained 566 yards of total offense against the Rangers defense, 356 of those coming on the ground. The Tigers averaged 6.7 per carry and scored five rushing touchdowns. Two of those came on carries by Oliver, with the remaining three scored by freshman Donelle Hoof. The Tiger defense held Northwestern to 291 yards of total offense. The Rangers mustered only 61 yards rushing yards on 30 attempts. Even more impressive, the Tigers defense held the Rangers to only five third down conversions on 15 tries. Northwestern running back Jarion Tudman broke free for 51 yards on the second play of the Rangers opening possession. They threw three incompletions from the Ouachita 16 yard line and then missed a 3-yard field goal attempt. Taking over on their own 20 yard line, the Tigers offense marched down the field in 11 plays with Kris Oliver scoring on the ground from five yards out, giving Ouachita a 7-0 lead.
Running wild – Quarterback Austin Warford currently leads the GAC in rushing. The junior form Malvern, Ark. has 396 yards on the ground and is averaging 132 yards per game. In the category of rushing yards by a quarterback across all NCAA divisions, Warford trails only Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.
On the next Tiger possession, Austin Warford hit Ryan Perkins for a 35-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline. After forcing the second-straight three and out by the Rangers, Ouachita pounded the ball on the ground for 83 yards on 11 plays. Oliver broke loose for a 56-yard scamper, the longest play of the drive. Donelle Hoof carried it into the end zone from two yards out and Ouachita led 21-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.
Air mail – Quarterback Austin Warford ranks third in passing completion (.736%) and is fourth in passing efficiency with a 204.1 rating among all Division II quarterbacks. His current 230 passing yards per game is a career high. His primary target has been senior wideout Ke’Vontae Pope. Pope is averaging just 87 receiving yards per game. Five Tigers are averaging more than 15 yards per catch.
Northwestern answered on the first play of their next drive, scoring on a 75 yard pass play. Trailing 21-7, the Ranger started the second quarter on their own 35 yard line. A pass interference call on the Tiger defense nullified an interception by Shaquille Hunter. The Rangers capitalized with their second touchdown of the game, but a failed PAT made it a 21-13 game.
Guaranteed ground delivery – Sophomore running back Kris Oliver leads the GAC with seven touchdowns through the first three games, all of those coming on the ground and all coming inside opponent’s 10 yard line. Through three games this year, Oliver is one touchdown ahead of last year’s pace when he set a Tiger freshman record with 19 rushing touchdowns. Pick ‘em - Senior safety Devin Price picked off two passes versus Southwestern Oklahoma State last week, giving him three this season. He’s tied for the conference lead in interceptions and his one interception per game average is second-best in Division II. His three picks are a career-high. Breaking up is hard to do – Seniors Jordan Jones and Devin Price are both ranked in the GAC’s top 10 fro pass break-ups. Jones has four through three games and is tied for third with a 1.33 average. Price is tied for eighth with three, averaging one per game.
Warford hit Oliver to give Ouachita in the flat on the right sideline for a 12yard touchdown, giving Ouachita a 28-13 lead at halftime. Ouachita dominated the third quarter, scoring on three of their four possessions. Hoof scored his second rushing touchdown of the game in the quarter and Oliver rumbled for a 59-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left in the quarter. Ouachita outscored the Rangers 17-0 in the third. They possessed the ball for 8:38, gaining seven first downs and going 3-5 on third down conversions. The Ouachita defense was stellar, holding Northwestern to 26 yards of offense and forcing the Ranger offense to 0-3 on third down conversions in the third. Cole Antley connected on his second field goal of the game to open the Tigers scoring in the fourth quarter. Northwestern’s defense held the Tigers on their next possession forcing them to punt from the Ouachita 44. A Ranger fumble was recovered by senior Justin Jones on the Northwestern 12 yard line. Hoof scored on the first play, rushing it in from 12 yards out. It was Hoof’s third rushing touchdown of the night. Freshman Parker Witt came up big with a sack on the Ranger’s final possession, forcing them to punt it away with 11 seconds remaining.

TODD KNIGHT After 17 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 70 All-Great American Conference players in just five years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast eight consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in seven of eight of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 145 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections, 18 All-Conference selections and the Division II Special Teams Player of the Year. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
