Backyard plant diversity can encourage a suite of beneficial insects. And the best news is that native plants are beautiful and well adapted to our environment. Activity: YardMaps and e-Bird
Self-Perpetuating Perennials: Some native plants that are beloved by pollinators are also helpful in populating your landscape with their offspring. Learn about easy to maintain plants that spread well on their own and can stand up to invasive plants in your yard. Activity: Citizen Science Pollinator sites Flower Power! Flower shape and color affect pollinator forage success. Learn what makes a great nectar source and who can feed from it. We’ll teach you to look at flowers like a pollinator! And after all variety is the spice of life!

Finding the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, Training and Operations Center Auditorium 112 Old Route 6, Carmel NY The Bureau of Emergency Services Auditorium is located on the Don B Smith government campus in Carmel near the Putnam Plaza shopping center. Cross streets: Old Route 6 and Route 6 Nearby landmarks: Flying Arrow Sports and United Martial Arts The building housing the auditorium is at the end of the campus farthest from old route 6. Once on the property, wind your way to the back left side of the campus (look for Spring Garden School signs) and park in the large lot. The Auditorium is in the newest building on the campus (skylight on top, stairs in front). What’s all the Buzz? Pollinators are in the news: honeybees are beleaguered, monarch butterfly habitat is threatened, and climate change is pushing our native pollinators out of their customary ranges. Join us for a day of learning about our troubled pollinators, creating biodiverse landscapes, and choosing beautiful native plants! Come learn how the choices you make can help your backyard buddies flourish. We’ll discuss the importance of plant diversity, flower shape, and providing nectar sources for natural predators and parasitoids. Ready to create a pollinator landscape with self-perpetuating native plants that help suppress invading weeds? Or maybe you want to build a monarch waystation? Your registration fee includes materials to build a backyard beneficial bug shelter. We’ll provide coffee, tea, and light snacks. Bring your own brown-bag lunch or visit a nearby restaurant. Register by March 28, please! Take home a packet of free milkweed seeds! Registration is only $25 per person & Includes materials fee
