Guide to Reading Champions A National Literacy Trust membership resource
This resource uses peer influence to target reluctant readers and increase their enjoyment of reading, whilst impacting positively on the rest of the school.
What is Reading Champions? Reading Champions is not a ‘reading reward’ initiative for those who are already engaged with reading. Instead the scheme targets children who are not necessarily readers, but have a degree of status within the school. Chosen pupils become reading advocates and as a result develop their enthusiasm for reading. The Reading Champions framework can be implemented with both boys and girls, but we recommend that schools run the scheme for boys and girls separately.
The bronze, silver and gold framework The reading champions work towards three levels of achievement – bronze, silver and gold. These are based on fun activities to promote reading for enjoyment, the criteria for which are set by the children (with the help of staff). This simple and flexible framework gives the pupils ownership, and can be developed as they grow in confidence, with support and encouragement from staff as needed. There should be an increase in both effort and commitment as pupils work through the awards. Here is a suggestion for achievements at each award level:
Bronze reading champions - generating enthusiasm for reading through recommendations and promotions Silver reading champions – getting involved in schemes to encourage other pupils to read Gold reading champions - making an outstanding contribution to developing the school’s reading culture
Achievements will inevitably be dictated by pupils' ages, abilities, and how long the scheme is being run for. You can download certificates (bronze, silver and gold) from the Reading Champions resource page. Our Reading Champions toolkit, which includes suggestions for activities can be downloaded from the Reading Champions resource page. We would also encourage you and to add your own ideas and criteria to the supplementary resources section.
