Form A – Interview and Field Grid Map  This is your initial visit with the operator and must be completed before any field work.  Form A data collection may begin immediately following the workshop for ALL samples.  Explain the survey purpose and obtain permission to lay out sample.  Verify acres of wheat intended to be harvested for grain.  Draw wheat fields and complete Table A.  If you are unable to make contact with the operator before the first field work period (begins April 25), keep trying!

Form A – Multiple Samples  Complete the field grid map and inside of Form A ONCE with the operator. Later, transfer the data to the remaining Form A’s for that operator.  Sample numbers and Selected Acres will be listed for each multiple in Table B in all the Form A’s.  Once you have selected the Sample Fields, complete the back of Form A for each sample with the operator.

Form A – No Wheat for Grain Harvest  If the operator has no wheat intended for grain harvest on the ENTIRE operation, make detailed notes and return the entire Sample Kit Envelope to Austin.  Examples:  All wheat will be cut for hay.  All wheat was abandoned or plowed under.  Was not wheat, it was actually a wheat/rye mix for grazing.  All wheat will be grazed out completely.  How could this happen?  The wheat harvested question on March Ag was reported or recorded incorrectly.

 Operator changed their intentions due to weather/prices/etc.

Paces Selection and Laying Out the Sample Unit

 The paces selection is based solely on the acreage of the sample field.  Example – if sample field is 25 acres:  Unit 1 – 12 paces along edge, 167 paces into field.  Unit 2 – 42 paces along edge, 197 paces into field. Starting from last pace required for Unit 1, Unit 2 is 30 more paces along edge and 30 more paces into field.

Laying Out the Sample Units  Mark your stakes before you go into the field.  Sample # (on buffer zone stake)  U1-R1, U1-R2, etc.  U1-Clip 1, U1-Clip 2, etc.

 Use plenty of flagging ribbon.  Mark your starting corner.  Mark Unit 1 at start of buffer zone.  Mark Unit 2 at start of buffer zone.  Use ribbon to separate and identify the stalks that are inside/outside of the unit.

Laying Out the Sample Units 1. Determine the starting corner. 2. Walk the paces. 3. Lay out the 5 foot Buffer Zone.

4. Lay out the Count Area. 5. Lay out the Clip Areas. 6. Walk the additional 30/30 paces to Unit 2.

7. Repeat steps 3-5 for Unit 2.

 The first corner of the field reached when approaching the field.

 As long as it will allow the sample units equal chance of falling anywhere in the field.

2. Walk the paces.  Start 1.5 feet outside the plowed edge.  Walk parallel to the longer side of the field the required number of paces along edge of field.  Turn at a right angle and walk into the field the required number of paces.

2. Walk the paces.  At the last pace, place yardstick so that it touches the toe of your shoe and crosses three drill rows, (either to the left of your toe or beyond your toe, depending on the direction of the drill rows).

Laying Out the Sample Units 3. Lay out the 5 foot Buffer Zone.  Always to the right of the yardstick.

 Insert a red stake (Sample #) into the ground.  Using the anchor pin and measuring tape, measure exactly 5 feet and place a red stake (U1-R1) at the base of the plants.  Reposition the yardstick within the 5 foot buffer so that it touches the U1-R1 stake and crosses three drill rows.

Laying Out the Sample Units 4. Lay out the Count Area.  Working to the right, carefully slip the wheat frame into Row 1 through the base of the plants, with the inside corner of the left tine touching the U1-R1 stake.  The tines of the frame may divide a plant with many stalks – do not move stalks in and out of the frame.  Place a red stake in the inside corner of the right tine to finish marking Row 1.

 Carefully lift and move the frame to measure and mark the second and third rows, using your marked red stakes.

Laying Out the Sample Units 5. Lay out the Clip Areas.  Move to the right of the Count Area and re-insert the wheat frame with the left tine just inside the Count Area, touching the red stake.

 Place a blue stake inside the right tine to mark Row 1 of Clip Area A. Lift and move the frame to measure and mark the second and third rows, using blue stakes.  Repeat to lay out Clip Area B immediately to the right of the first clip area, again using blue stakes.

Laying Out the Sample Units  Unit 2  Starting from the last required pace for Unit 1 (at start of Buffer Zone), walk 30 paces parallel with the longer side of the field and in the same direction you were traveling for Unit 1.  Turn at a right angle and walk 30 paces into the field.

Laying Out the Sample Units – Special Cases  Blank Areas  IM page 411  Units fall in the field where the paces take you, good spot or bad.  Exception: if a blank area was accounted for in Table A (deducted), you stop counting paces as you cross that blank area.  Such as an old fence line through middle of field that was not seeded.  End of field is reached with paces still left to take  IM page 411  The “bounce back” – turn around and continue the paces back in the direction you came from.  Always lay sample out to the right.

 If the Unit is a Code 6/7 (hard dough/ripe), you only need to lay out the Buffer Zone and Count Area.  Then make your counts and clips in the Count Area.  No need to lay out the Clip Areas.  Field is broadcast or no drill rows can be distinguished  IM page 409-410  Use your wheat frame, tape measure, and lots of flagging ribbon to make a 21.6” by 21.6” square (measures 30.5” on the diagonal)  Field is a center-pivot field  IM page 413 and 416

Form B – Counts and Completing the Form

Form B – Counts and Form Completion  PURPOSE – the counts and clips will develop a yield indication which is used to set the monthly wheat yield forecast.  Each monthly visit:

EVEN-numbered samples should be worked as first priority during the first field work period (April 25-May 1). ODD-numbered samples ONLY IF the farmer will harvest in 2-3 days. Otherwise work these samples prior to harvest or during the next survey period (beginning May 25). ALL samples will be visited in the second month and beyond until harvest.

FORM B: ITEM 1 – PESTICIDES If “Yes”….. Mark “YES”, then write down application date and the name of pesticide. Then proceed to item 2. Example 1: 4/6/2017

If “No”….. Mark “NO” and proceed to item 2.

FORM B: ITEM 1 – PESTICIDES cont’d If pesticides are used:  Know where the pesticide info is posted.  Field re-entry is no less than 3 days (72 hours).  Wear long-sleeve shirt/pants and head covering.  Launder clothes promptly.

 Thoroughly wash all exposed skin areas.  Refer to pages 107 - 108 in your Interviewer’s Manual.  Refer to documents on the NASDA-NASS website, under Personnel Resources and Safety Library * If operator does not know if/when they will apply pesticides, then note this on the kit envelope and ask them again before entering the field in future.

FORM B: ITEM 2 and 3 - UNIT LOCATION The number of paces along the edge and into the field is referenced from the front of the Sample Kit Envelope. The additional 30 paces is used to locate where Unit 2 will be.

Measured in feet and tenths of feet. Initial visit only in most cases. Measure from the center of plants in Row #1 to the center of the plants in Row #5.

FORM B: ITEM 6 – STAGES OF MATURITY  Correctly determining the stage of maturity is extremely important. The maturity stage dictates:  Which counts will be completed.  Which clips will be completed.

 Be sure to assign stage of maturity that represents the MAJORITY of the plants.  Assign stage for each unit. The maturity of Unit 1 determines which Counts and Clips are done.

 Squeeze the head (if necessary, outside the unit) to determine the level of maturity.  When in doubt, always classify in the LOWER stage of maturity.

Stages of Maturity  Very Important!  Take extra care when determining the Stage of Maturity between a Code 5 (soft dough) and a Code 6 (hard dough). If any doubt, choose LOWER stage.  Code 5 clips are done in the Clip Area.  Code 6 clips are done in the Count Area.

 Once the Count Area is clipped, there is no going back.

Form B Counts  Maturity Codes 1 and 2 – start counts at Item 7.  Item 7 - Stalks  Count all wheat stalks with at least one leaf.  Include stalks in the associated middle of each row.  Do not count stems from other small grains or weeds.  Item 8 - Heads in Late Boot  Count the number of heads in late boot.  At this stage of maturity, probably few to none.  Item 9 – Emerged Heads  Count when spikelets are seen through the split in the sheath leaf or beyond.  At this stage of maturity, probably none.

 Mark the half-way point of that row with a blue stake. Half the wheat frame or 10.8 inches. You may have marked when you laid out the sample.

Form B Clips – Code 3, 4, or 5  Beginning from the end of the row farthest from the count area:  Mow each stalk until 5 emerged heads are obtained (or until one-half of the row is completely mowed).  Clip stalk of emerged head ½ inch below the head.  Place the 5 emerged heads in a small bag. Record count on Yellow ID Tag.

Form B Clips – Code 3, 4, or 5  Mow remaining stalks up to the half-way mark.  Clip and count any heads in late boot.  Clip at base of top foliage leaf.  Place in a medium bag; record count on Yellow ID Tag.  Clip and count remaining emerged heads.  Clip 1/2 inch below head.  Place in a large bag; record count on Yellow ID Tag.

 Repeat for Unit 2 using same bags and same Yellow ID Tag as Unit 1.

 Maturity Code 6 or 7 – final pre-harvest sample with Pink ID Tag.  The final pre-harvest clips include mowing the Count Area.  Use a separate large bag and a separate Pink ID Tag for each unit.

Shipping UPS  Forms A and B should be returned to the Southern Plains Regional Field Office in Austin, TX.  You have 8 Next Day Air Return Service to Austin.  About 2 per month, send promptly.  Lab samples must be shipped within 24 hours to the OY National Lab in St. Louis, MO.

 You have 4 Two-Day Air Return Service to St. Louis for each sample.  You have 1 Overnight Air Return Service to St. Louis for each sample.  Do NOT hold completed lab samples.

 Form E should be shipped with the Gleaning Lab Sample to the National Lab in St. Louis.

Form E – Post Harvest Gleaning

Laying Out the Gleaning Unit  Locate the gleaning unit.  Add 5 paces to the number of paces used when sample was first laid out.  Use same starting corner, same direction of travel.  Unit layout.

 5 foot buffer zone.  Gleaning area:  One wheat frame wide.

 3 rows (and middles) deep.  Up to the fourth row.

Form E - Gleaning  Collect all stalks with heads, detached heads, and loose kernels within the gleaning area.  Include stalks with heads and detached heads crossing the boundaries adjacent to the starting corner.  Exclude the material crossing the other two boundaries.  Include gleaning from both units in the same paper bag.

Form E - Gleaning  Complete the Form E and ONE Pink ID Tag for the gleaning sample (both units).  Secure Pink ID Tag with a rubber band around the paper bag; place in Tyvek envelope with the completed Form E.  Ship to the National Lab in St. Louis, MO.
