The NASDA Foundation will work with state departments of agriculture to expand the participation of farmers in farm to school programs. We will partner with state staff to develop and expand training to increase farmers’ sales to local schools. We will develop staff exchange programs that help staff learn about successful farmer training programs taking place across the country.

WO M E N ’ S M A R K E T D E V E LO P M E N T M AST E R C L ASS We will empower women to scale up value-added businesses (businesses that process ag crops into other products such as craft beverages and lotions). The Master Class will provide rising female entrepreneurs with intensive market development training, one-on-one mentorship and participation in trade shows. Participants will learn how to access new regional, national and international markets. Training will explore selling to government agencies, online delivery services and regional supermarkets.

We will develop the Smart Farm Challenge, a national business competition for early stage ag tech businesses that solve supply chain challenges. Winners will receive startup funds, mentorship and national publicity. They will also receive training on taking on investors and applying for federal grants.

We will recruit staff members who shape agriculture policy, programs and research. Participants will engage in visits to working farms and learn first-hand from farmers and ranchers. Tours of 2– 3 days will explore emerging issues, including labor, precision agriculture and invasive pests.

We will partner with state departments of agriculture to develop nutrient management programs for farmers. Our first project will provide Midwestern states with funds and training to develop programs that include farmer-led tours, expert presentations and small group discussions. We will equip farmers with the knowledge and decision making skills to effectively implement nutrient management strategies on their farms..

I N VAS I V E P E ST R A P I D R E S P O N S E P R OJ E C T We will equip state departments of agriculture to better address invasive pests that attack crops. Our first project will focus on Northeastern states impacted by the Spotted Lanternfly, a pest threatening $18 billion in agriculture crops. We will develop a mini-grant program that provides states with funds to develop targeted outreach materials to help contain and eradicate the Spotted Lanternfly. We will also hold a grantee gathering that brings staff together to share best practices. Photo by: Erica Smyers, PhD student, Penn State Department of Entomology
