TRAINING FOR POWER Hold the bottom of a squat for a few seconds, then jump. Now repeat where you give yourself a counter-movement or even a running start into one fluid motion. What happens? You jump higher. This is because when you have a rapid lengthening of a muscle/tendon, it has elastic properties that react to the change in length and tension increasing the force of contraction. This utilizes stored elastic energy like a slingshot to produce a very rapid, powerful contraction. This stretch-contract phenomenon is called the stretch- shortening cycle (SSC).!
WHY IS TRAINING FOR POWER IMPORTANT?
Performance Enhancement Plyometric and ballistic training improves elasticity, reactive strength and ultimately power, resulting in increased performance. You must train explosively to be explosive.!
Injury Prevention – Many injuries are caused by an inability to absorb force, or a rapid overlengthening of a muscle (think of a hamstring pull sprinting, or an ACL tear cutting). Exercises such as plyometrics teach our body to handle that rapid lengthening. !!
