JOB DESCRIPTION: SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER (FULL-TIME PERMANENT) INTRODUCTION Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia, the largest theatre company in Victoria and one of the major performing arts companies in Australia. It is a semi-autonomous department of the University of Melbourne. Southbank Theatre, which was purpose-built for the MTC in the Southbank arts precinct, commenced operation in 2009. Southbank Theatre comprises the Sumner Theatre with 500 seats and the Lawler Studio (a rehearsal or a flexible performance space), state of the art back of house and front of house facilities, function spaces, a bar and café and other amenities. Southbank Theatre is available for hire by external organisations when it is not needed for MTC performances and events. The marketing team works in partnership with the PR and Communications team, headed by the PR and Communications Director. Marketing Assistant Senior Graphic Designer Graphic Designer – part time PR and Communications PR & Communications Director Publicist PR and Communications Assistant Publications Coordinator Receptionist WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The Senior Graphic Designer supervises the Graphic Designer (part-time) and works closely with the Marketing Manager and Marketing Coordinator. Key internal departmental relationships include with the Marketing, PR, Artistic and Development Departments. Key external relationships are with printers, photographers, advertising/branding agencies amongst others. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Senior Graphic Designer is responsible for overseeing the creative development of a wide range of design items to meet set briefs and achieve key marketing imperatives and artistic visions, including but not limited to: 

Create MTC campaign imagery (for shows, seasons and specific campaigns) from start to finish, including early conceptualization, art direction at photoshoots and detailed photoshopping to meet marketing and artistic objectives



Design, develop and provide final artwork for all MTC routine advertising and collateral, including programmes, signage, print advertisements, flyers, invitations, newsletters and digital assets



Supervise creation and delivery of annual season brochure, meeting the artistic and marketing vision and ensuring highest possible design standards



Service the design requirements of other internal MTC departments such as education, development and publicity to ensure quality, timely and on-brand outcomes



Liaise with external suppliers such as printers and media outlets, attending press checks where necessary, ensuring the timely quality delivery of material



Work closely and collaboratively with external stakeholders such as photographers, directors, actors, make-up artists and advertising/branding agencies, taking direction as required



Adhere to MTC brand guidelines, ensuring all materials reflect MTC brand and visual identity



Supervise the Graphic Designer, ensuring quality design outcomes for all MTC design work



Maintain and archive MTC photography and design files

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES 

Tertiary qualifications in graphic design



Over seven years professional senior level graphic design experience

Outstanding skills and significant experience in a fast paced environment using Adobe Suite software such as Indesign and Illustrator and Photoshop



Experience using range of different print and scanning technology



Strong skills in illustration and photography



Ability to think creatively and create concepts from scratch under tight time constraints, with flexibility to change direction nimbly and positively



Willingness to take direction, work within brand guidelines and a tightly specified design brief



Exemplary interpersonal, communication and team work skills



A calm temperament with a good sense of humour

SALARY AND CONDITIONS MTC is an equal opportunity, smoke-free, family friendly employer. The role is based at our Headquarters: 252 Sturt Street, Southbank. This position is a full-time permanent role and is expected to work a minimum of 37.5 hours per week but to manage their time in a life enhancing way. Ordinary hours of work are between Monday and Friday, 9am to 5pm. Conditions include four weeks annual leave loading per annum, an in-house subsidised canteen and complimentary theatre tickets.
