TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

The 2013 Days Inn Tournament features four teams looking to kick off the second half of the schedule on a high note inside Bream Gym. All four teams hail from different conferences with Gettysburg competing in the Centennial Conference, Alvernia in the Commonwealth Conference, Gwynedd-Mercy in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, and Salisbury in the Capital Athletic Conference. This year’s tournament features three head coaches who are their program’s all-time wins leaders. Gettysburg’s Mike Kirkpatrick, Alvernia’s Kevin Calabria, and Gwynedd-Mercy’s Keith Mondillo have won a combined 1,086 games. The following are brief capsules on each team’s progress so far this season: GETTYSBURG COLLEGE Gettysburg is coming off a tough one-point loss to Swarthmore to end the opening semester. The Bullets took the lead late on a running lay-up by junior Cori Younghans with only 16 seconds left, but the Garnet cashed in with a pair of free throws to snatch the victory. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Orange and Blue. A pair of juniors and a freshman have paced the team in the early going. Caroline Murphy and Alyssa Isler have combined to lead the team in scoring in six of eight contests. Murphy leads the way with 11.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while Isler has put up a pair of 20-point efforts on the season as part of her 10.5 points per game average. First-year Jessica Porter has been a model of consistency for the team, netting at least eight points in each outing, including a career-high 17 last time out.

2012 Days Inn Tournament Game 1 Gettysburg 46, Scranton 41

ALVERNIA UNIVERSITY Alvernia fell to No. 13 Lebanon Valley 85-60 in its final game before the holidays. Sophomore Stevie Fortna and freshman Chelsea Ebersole each tossed in 14 points for Alvernia. Fortna and Ebersole lead a balanced attack with scoring averages of 13.7 and 13.3 points per game. The duo has combined for 41 three-pointers as well. Sophomore Kaitlyn Yoh is averaging 4.3 assists per game, while senior Kayla Long is averaging just under a double-double with 8.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Game 2 Messiah 73, Neumann 43

GWYNEDD-MERCY COLLEGE Gwynedd-Mercy saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt with a 72-56 loss to Richard Stockton before the break. Sophomore Shea Wassel posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Nicole Dougherty added 10 points. Wassel has turned in four 20-point efforts this season, including back-to-back 23-point outings against Juniata and King’s. She leads the team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Junior Lauren Smith has canned 21-of-49 (.429) attempts from beyond the arc this season.

Championship Messiah 67, Gettysburg 58

SALISBURY UNIVERSITY Salisbury ended 2012 with a 61-54 victory over Randolph. Sophomore Anna Hackett poured in a careerhigh 32 points and posted seven steals and six rebounds in the victory. Senior Katie McGahagan ripped down 10 rebounds and added seven points in the win. Hackett was tabbed Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time following the win over Randolph. The point guard has put up 20 or more points five times this season and she has logged two or more steals in her last six outings. Head Coach Kelly Lewandowski is in her second season with the Sea Gulls. Lewandowski spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Gettysburg, helping the Bullets to a 57-23 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The women’s basketball team would like to extend a special thanks to the Days Inn for their continuing support of the Gettysburg athletic program. We would also like to thank all the individuals responsible for making this event possible, including faculty, staff, coaches, and parents.
