2A SUBSTATE BASKETBALL

Feb. 25, 2017 – 7:00 p.m., Independence H.S. (Independence, IA) TONIGHT’S GAME: Dike-New Hartford (21-3, 15-1) vs. Cascade (21-2, 16-1) IN A NUTSHELL: QUOTABLE: NUMBER OF THE NIGHT:

COVERAGE:

Cascade chases a fourth straight state tournament berth, while D-NH looks for its second in four years. The winner plays Monday or Tuesday at state in Des Moines (at Wells Fargo Arena). “They’ve got a couple of kids who shoot the ball pretty good percentage-wise. It’s about being able to stop that dribble penetration.” – Dike-New Hartford head coach Greg Moore 21-0 – Cascade/Camanche/Northeast’s record in River Valley out-of-division play.

Recent History:

Recent History:

Dike-New Hartford never got comfortable in its district final victory against Jesup on Tuesday night, but the Wolverines’ final push in the fourth quarter was plenty to send them to a win in their fifth straight district final appearance. The Wolverines were down 32-30 going to the fourth quarter and 37-36 with less than six minutes to go in the ballgame, but rolled up an 11-2 run over the next four minutes, pushing the lead to 47-39 with just 1:42 remaining. Three Wolverines finished the night in double figures, led by Connor Blough’s 14 points, while Ben Latusek led on the glass with seven boards. D-NH has counted its perimeter shooting and rebounding as strengths throughout the course of the season, but not on this night – D-NH shot just 3-of-15 from downtown and collected just five offensive boards. They did, however, hit their first 17 free throws (and 19-of-22 for the night).

Conditioning certainly won’t be a question mark with this Cascade team…at least, not after Tuesday night’s district final against Dyersville Beckman. After taking a 36-18 lead in the third quarter, and a 39-26 lead to the final period, the Blazers made a full-court defensive push to tie the game at 42 with 1:28 to go. After a pair of extra periods, Brock Simon drilled a three early in the third overtime that put the Cougars ahead 51-48, and ahead to stay. Cascade only played six players in the contest – junior Johnny Supple led the way with 21 points and an 8-of-14 night from the field, while junior Brock Simon followed up with 11 points and Haris Hoffman had a near-double-double (nine points, 10 boards). Almost all of the Cougars’ points came on the first try, though – only three of the team’s 32 rebounds came at the offensive end of the floor.

What to Watch For:

What to Watch For:

It’s the third time this Dike-New Hartford team has been in the substate round, but with a lot of experienced players exiting the program after last year, the returning six seniors from last year may have to guide their younger players through tonight’s game a bit. If the way the sophomores played in the fourth quarter against Jesup is any indication, though, even the younger set will keep D-NH in good hands – Cade Fuller stepped up to the line and knocked down five of his six fourth-quarter free throws. As the second post on the floor, tonight’s game will also be an important one for Colton Harberts – he’ll have the twin tasks of playing in his first substate game, and getting offensive boards against the Cougars.

Jacob Brindle’s team is one that will be a favorite to win the state title next year, and will already be a team to watch this year should they make it past D-NH and on to Des Moines. Cascade only plays seven players regularly, but four of them average in the 11to-12-point-per-game range, making it impossible for opposing teams to key on any one player. It’s not a group that has been all that dominant on the offensive glass, but their specialties are defense and disruption – the Cougars are extremely talented at taking opposing teams out of their strategy and what they want to do. It’s the seventh substate game in a row for the Cougars, with their last substate losses coming in 2012 and 2013.

Impact Player:

Impact Player:

Royce Weber will have some tall tasks of his own tonight – namely, guarding a smart group of Cascade guards and giving the Wolverines a needed presence on the perimeter.

Johnny Supple may be the player to watch for Cascade tonight, with his ability to get to the basket and battle inside – he’s certainly no slouch on the perimeter either, though.

Keys to the Game:

Keys to the Game:

With so much scoring out of the starting five, going on the attack and putting Cascade in foul trouble will be a solid strategy for the Wolverines in this one.

The Cougars will need to get a few extra touches inside – second chances haven’t been a strength for them this year, but they’ll need to be tonight.
