ORIENTATION INFORMATION PAMPHLET Welcome to DK Martial Arts! Congratulations on your decision to take the challenge towards personal excellence! The purpose of this is to make your start with our school easy and comfortable. Included will be class times, rules and structure of our school, curriculum requirements, and general information to help welcome you and your family.
Here at DK Martial Arts we have a variety of different programs available to students who have a variety of different interests. The information enclosed in this letter is general information and if you are not sure if something applies to yourself then please consult your program handbook or speak with one of the Instructors or Staff and they will be more than happy to help you. We hope you enjoy your training with us. To ensure that you achieve the outcomes you want, whether that is an improvement in your fitness and energy levels, gaining the skills and confidence to protect yourself or an avenue for stress release, it is really important to establish specific goals for yourself. We value a holistic approach, encompassing your health and all areas of your life, so if you want CLARITY with your goals, and GUIDANCE with the SPECIFIC STEPS to achieving what you really want then why not discuss this with our trained Success Coaches? You are entitled to train in all of the timetabled classes per week specific to the membership and level of program you have enrolled in. Timetables may be changed at the discretion of DK Martial Arts management. Ensure that you always take a copy of the updated timetables and events calendars available at reception. Our staff and instructors, along with their assistants are here to guide you toward greater selfconfidence and discipline as you improve your balance, coordination, flexibility and reactions. Our program gradually guides you to improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, increased confidence, mental discipline, self-defence capabilities and more. It is a fun way to get into shape and stay fit. At our school you will learn: Self-defence: You will learn effective and powerful self-defence skills as well as the fundamental attitudes appropriate to those skills. The basic attitudes of a successful martial artist (and of a successful person) are respect, discipline, goal setting and effective leadership. Respect: Through the martial arts philosophy and customs, students learn to build superior relationships based on respect and friendship. Discipline: Through martial arts training, students develop self-motivation and perseverance. Goal Setting: This is a necessary road map for a successful life. It was once said, “failing to plan is planning to fail”. On the road to Black Belt, students gain the experience and feeling of success by earning progressively higher belt ranks. Leadership: As you work with your fellow students you will develop communication skills. At the level of Brown Belt, students are eligible to take part in our Instructor Certification Program.
DK Martial Arts is a Black Belt school. Our goal for every student is to help him or her attain their Black Belt, not only in the martial arts but in life. By working towards this goal we create an environment in which the student develops confidence through accomplishing high, but realistic and attainable goals. At DK Martial Arts, we have developed all our programs to provide you with the following benefits: •
The program builds confidence and character by providing you with control over your body and ability to stand up to peer pressure and other intimidating situations.
•
Our program emphasises establishing discipline and courtesy. The structure of respect is built into Karate instruction.
•
The movements of the program develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility.
•
The awarding of higher levels gives you a sense of achievement and accomplishment. We keep this very much in mind. Training for these tests and passing them enhances your ability to concentrate, plan and triumph over learning hurdles. This is an excellent reinforcement of study techniques.
•
The foundation of our programs is its self-defence value. We are very careful to teach that what you learn in our programs is not to be used outside the Karate class in any manner other than in true self-defence. The result is a self-confident person who does not need to show off or bully in front of others.
•
And finally, Martial Arts is good, clean fun for all ages - a great way to burn off extra energy and to gain fitness.
If you have any questions, feel free to talk to any Instructor. We believe strongly in the value of our program for all ages, because our highest goal is for you to become a Black Belt/Black Singlet, not only in Martial Arts, but also in life.

Notifications of all holiday schedules are posted on the notice boards around the centre two weeks prior to the holiday. VACATIONS OR EXTENDED ABSENCES If you will be missing class for vacation or illness for a period of one month or more, please notify the school. Time you miss can then be added to the end of your program, or you may receive one make-up class for each week missed to catch you back up. You must notify us and have time added or make-ups scheduled before your current attendance card is replaced, when achieving a new belt UNIFORM - DRESS / PROGRAM HANDBOOK Each program has a set uniform and program handbook. Every student is required to make sure they are wearing that set uniform in ALL classes. Make sure you check with your instructor or the program handbook it you are not sure which uniform is for your program. The uniform should be kept clean and pressed at all times. Your Handbook provides you with a comprehensive guide to the philosophy, the history, pressure points, grading curriculum and all that you may need in your journey to Black Belt and beyond. This handbook must available for instructors to mark off in the lead up to grading, plus the book must be given to the grading panel on a grading day or grading won’t be completed. Good Luck. PATCHES As student progress through our programs, or receive special recognition for training or a role they are under taking, they may receive a patch to be placed on their uniform. These patches are BBC / MC and L’Ship patches which all go on the front right hand side of your chest. S.T.O.R.M, S.W.A.T patches and stars go on the right shoulder. Please see your instructor if you have any questions.
THE BELTS / SINGLETS Students of DK Martial Arts show their progress in the art by the colour of the belt/singlet they wear. Each colour belt/singlet is a step closer towards the goal of Black Belt/Singlet. The progression towards Black Belt/Singlet differs from program to program and you should check you program manual to see what applies to you. Students’ of DK Martial Arts can exam for their belts on an average of 12 weeks. To go from one belt level to the next in our Lil’ Dragon Classes students must earn 3 tips stars each belt. Kids and Teens & Adults must have 3 - 6 tips stars each belt to advance to the next level depending if at beginner, intermediate or advance level. THE CYCLE COULD YOU EXPLAIN? One of the biggest questions in the school is “How does the cycle work?” Well, we’re going to answer this best we can. The Black Belt Success Cycle is the way we know what we’re going to teach each week. A cycle can be Six to eight weeks long. Students will learn this cycle’s material (Kata or Techniques) for the weeks allowed and tip test on the final week. Each week of a cycle students will learn a portion of what they need to achieve their tip. This is why it’s very important to come to 2 – 3 classes per week, so you don’t miss any material. If you do miss a week, you should try to make it up with either a private class or come early to your class and ask for a little extra help. The reason we have a cycle is that it breaks down the material that you need to learn to achieve Black Belt, into a weekly training program. This way, the instructors know what to teach and when to teach it. Another reason for a cycle is that classes are taught in groups. If the whole group is working on the same thing it makes it easier for the instructor to get the subject across to everyone and everyone gets to feed off of each other’s motivation and knowledge of the subject. EXAMPLE: Let’s assume that you’ve just received your yellow belt. Yellow – Green belts train together and need to achieve a total of 6 tips to exam for Green belt/Brown bar (2 on yellow, 2 on green bar, 2 on green, 2 on brown bar). During a cycle you learn material for your 1st tip. After achieving that tip you will start to learn material for your 2 nd tip and test for your next belt. While you are learning material for you 1st and 2nd tips, other students are learning the same material for their tip and belts, which tips and belt color may differ from yours. The way that this works is that after you have learned 6 tips worth of material you will then test for your tan belt. It doesn’t matter in which order you learn your material. So, when you learn something for your very 1st tip on your yellow belt someone else is learning the same thing for their last tip on their brown belt. The material is new to both of you. Again, this way, in each class the instructors are teaching the same thing to all students of the class. PRINCIPLES OF BLACK BELT Self Control, Modesty, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Indomitable Spirit. In addition to teaching these basic principles, DK Martial Arts also introduces a new “lesson of the month” each month. Our goal is to teach students “life skills and benefits.” Students are expected to demonstrate, retain and apply this material to their everyday lives. BLACK BELT CLUB The Black Belt Club is a special membership for those students with long-term goals. Members receive special style classes 2 – 3 times per week on material (weapons / hyper / sparring) only found in BBC class, a 10% discount in our pro -shop, special extra-curricular events, upgraded custom uniform and a club patch. If you are dedicated to the martial arts and have a goal of Black Belt you should see your instructor to convert your membership to that of the Black Belt Club.
MASTER’S CLUB Master’s Club is the same as the Black Belt Club, but this club is for advance students only. S.W.A.T., S.T.O.R.M, Leadership, Mentor Training Program This program is available to all students who wish to learn Leadership Skills and work ethics. This program is free of charge. Students who show a positive attitude and set a good example in class will receive an invitation to join this program. SPARRING Sparring is non-contact and contact (contact made during sparring will be monitored and allow depending on the rank/experience of the students – child/adults) but for the added protection of your child, we insist that ALL students who attend sparring class MUST have hand, foot and head protective padding as well as groin cup and a mouth guard. The equipment is available through the School. Label all your gear with your name immediately after purchase. Remember all gear looks the same and it’s very easy to lose or misplace it. Without labeling it is difficult to retrieve it. In addition, we make sure all of our training with a practice partner is as safe as possible by using the latest in martial arts safety gear. This allows a student to practice the techniques with realistic speed and power while at the same time keeping the risk of injury to a minimum. This level of intensity while practicing is necessary in developing the greatest level of confidence and familiarity in the technique.
All students are allowed to start sparring as soon as they enroll in our Black Belt Program. When a student achieves Yellow Belt, sparring becomes mandatory to advance to each level above Yellow Belt. Due to mandatory insurance regulations, all students who attend sparring class must have head, rib, foot, and hand padding as well as a protective mouthpiece. (Males must wear cup and supporter.) All sparring gear must be XFC Martial Arts approved gear. This equipment is available at the ProShop. All equipment sold in our Pro-Shop meets all industry standards and is the best on the market. TOURNAMENT COMPETITION. Tournaments are an excellent way to put your hard earned skills to the test and to develop a sense of fair play in a controlled competitive situation. The School holds a tournament for DK Martial Art members, plus there are many other tournaments DK Martial Art students can compete in. Reception will have forms and information on upcoming tournaments. DK Martial Arts is very supportive of students that want to compete in competition, however we do leave it up to the individual to decide if they wish to take part.
