MIZZOU BASEBALL 2004

BEACH BLAST -- FEB. 19-22 QUICK FACTS

A PERFECT START The Tigers are 3-0 for the first time since the 1999 season. MU picked up a win over Nevada and two wins over Portland last weekend in the season opening Oakland A’s Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. The 1999 team won its first four games before losing the fifth game of the year and finished 37-19 on the season. The last team to start was 5-0 was the 1987 team under Head Coach Gene McArtor. That team began the year with seven straight wins.

NO RUNS FO R YO U Mizzou’s shutout of Portland (13-0) last Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz. was the first shutout by a MU team since April 29, 2003 when the Tigers defeated St. Louis in the “Wood Bat Classic” by a score of 9-0. Junior RHP Erik Dessau and senior RHP Mark Alexander teamed up on the mound for the shutout of Portland. Dessau started on Saturday and pitched six inning, allowing seven hits to record the win. Alexander came on in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out five in three innings of work to record the save.

THE HITS KEEP O N COMING Two Tiger hitters have begun the season by recording hits in each of the first three games of the year. Senior 1B Cody Ehlers and sophomore SS Zane Taylor have put together three-game hitting streaks to begin the 2004 season.

OPENING ACT Missouri picked up its second straight win in season openers by defeating Nevada 8-7 last Friday in Phoenix, Ariz. Last year, the Tigers defeated UNCWilmington 12-1 to start the season. That win snapped a string of three straight season-opening defeats for Mizzou. MU Head Coach Tim Jamieson is now 6-31 at MU in season openers.

SENIORITY RULES After having just two seniors on the squad last season, Mizzou returns eight seniors in 2004. Two pitchers, Danny Hill and Mark Alexander, will return to the mound this season. Both are right-handers who saw significant playing time in 2003. Mizzou also returns its All-Big 12 second team catcher, Brad Flanders. The right side of the infield will consists of a pair of seniors as Cody Ehlers returns at first base and Jeremy Hernandez is back at second. Lee Laskowski, Ryan Rallo and Kyle Johnson will be back in the outfield for MU. Laskowski and Rallo will share time in left field and each will see time as the designated hitter when not in the outfield.

MIZZOU BASEBALL 2004

WHAT’S RETURNING...

THE LAST TIME...

Seven of Missouri’s nine position starters (including the DH) are returners from last year’s squad. Of the 2002 at-bats Mizzou had last season, 1574 (79%) came from players returning for the 2004 season. The returners also accounted for 73% of the runs scored last year, 75% of the hits, 85% of the home runs and 87% of the RBI. Five of the nine pitchers who started games for MU last year return this season. Junior Garrett Broshuis was second on the team in 2003 with 15 starts, while senior Danny Hill started seven games. All-Big 12 second team catcher Brad Flanders, along with Honorable Mention selections Cody Ehlers (1B), Ryan Rallo (OF) and Travis Wendte (RHP) are among those returning in 2004.

... AND WHAT’S NEW Missouri lost just two position starters from last year’s squad as CF Jayce Tingler used up his eligibility and SS Ian Kinsler was taken in the Major League Baseball draft. Replacing Tingler in centerfield may be the Tigers’ biggest challenge. A pair of sophomores, Tyler Williams and Josiah Holst are looking to step up to take that role. Sophomore Zane Taylor, the Tigers’ regular third baseman last year, will move to his left to fill the shortstop spot. Junior college transfer (Sante Fe CC) Cosme Caballero will take Taylor’s spot at third base. Among the new pitchers to the Missouri pitching staff who will likely see time on the mound include transfers Erik Dessau (Forest Park CC), Dustin Wernecke (Blinn College) and Dustin Braud (Boosier Parrish CC).

Texas was picked by the conference coaches to win the Big 12. Baylor was second followed by Nebraska. Six of the top seven teams in the preseason poll are from the Big 12 South, with Nebraska the only North team in the top half of the predictions.

BEACH BLAST -- FEB. 19-22 Last season, Jamieson led the Tigers back to NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1996 and for the 15th time in MU history. Success has not come easily, however. After struggling to a 19-34 record and a last-place finish in the Big Eight in 1995, Jamieson’s first season as the head coach, the 1996 Tigers rebounded with a remarkable 39-19 record (20-8 in the Big Eight) and a first-place regular season finish in the league’s final season. The Tigers placed third at the Big 12 Tournament by eliminating both Texas Tech and Texas. MU continued the streak of 30-win seasons with a 33-24 record and a 1-2 mark in the Big 12 Tournament in 2000. The 2001 season saw Missouri record another 30-win season with a 31-24-1 record and three members get drafted. The Tigers won back-to-back series against teams ranked in the nation’s top six on their way to a streak of winning 15 of 17 games. After missing the Big 12 Tournament in both 2001 and 2002, Jamieson retooled the Tigers last season, leading MU to a fourth place finish in the Big 12 and a bid to NCAA Regionals. The 2003 Tigers finished 36-22 on the year and at one point was ranked as high as No. 19 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Success was also part of Jamieson’s time away from Missouri. He was an assistant on the University of New Orleans coaching staff for six seasons and a standout catcher for the Privateers from 1978-81. Jamieson was named the team’s most valuable player as a senior as he hit .300 with eight home runs and 68 RBI and led the Privateers to the NCAA Midwest Regional. As an undergraduate, Jamieson was a member of three NCAA Tournament clubs and was selected to the 1980 AllNCAA South Regional team. During his coaching career at UNO, Jamieson was instrumental in guiding the Privateers to four NCAA Regional appearances (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988) and to a spot in the 1984 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from New Orleans. Jamieson’s MU roots run throughout his family. His father, Dick Jamieson, was a former offensive coordinator under Al Onofrio at Missouri and spent several years in the National Football League. His brother, Jeff, is a graduate of Missouri's School of Law and his sister, Judi, also attended MU. A graduate of Rock Bridge High (Columbia), Jamieson is married to the former Cindy Thornton of Columbia, Mo. They are the parents of two sons, Mickey ( 6) and Ty ( 5).
