Build your own simple planters in your outdoor area so that you can start to enjoy growing fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers.
Tip: When planting, place planks of wood onto the soil to step onto. This will avoid trampling down your soil as it needs to stay aerated.
Resources
• Suitable space
• Trenching shovel & hoe
• 4 planks of wood about 30cm wide. 2 planks long and 2 shorter.
• Saw
• Nails
• Hammer
• Good quality compost
• Gardening fork & rake
Method
• Mark out your planter area in a suitable space and saw your planks to the desired length if necessary.
• Using your trenching shovel & hoe, dig out a trench in your desired planter size, about 15cm deep (or about half of your planks’ width).
• Place your planks into the channel and nail together with a hammer and nails.
• Dig the soil over in your planter with a fork, remove any weeds and add a good quality compost to give your plants a good start. Rake over to aerate the soil.
