POSITION DESCRIPTION LEAD GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Introduction
Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia, the largest theatre company in Victoria and one of the major performing arts companies in Australia. It is a semi-autonomous department of the University of Melbourne. Southbank Theatre, which was purpose-built for the MTC in the Southbank arts precinct, commenced operation in 2009. Southbank Theatre comprises the Sumner Theatre with 500 seats and the Lawler Studio (a rehearsal or a flexible performance space), state of the art back of house and front of house facilities, function spaces, a bar and café and other amenities. Southbank Theatre is available for hire by external organisations when it is not needed for MTC performances and events.

The Company usually presents 11 - 12 plays in a Melbourne subscription season, a season of plays in its Studio space as well as touring productions intra- and interstate. MTC also has an extensive Education program, and a program of commissioning and developing new Australian work.

The Company employs approx. 93 staff on an ongoing basis and up to 400 casual staff as actors, directors, designers and in other creative and production roles.
Purpose of the Position
The Lead Graphic Designer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of MTC’s visual identity, producing in-season marketing collateral and designing visual campaigns for key MTC initiatives.
Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
To lead the design team, to produce a range of high quality visual design work for the MTC, across both print and digital.
Provide a leadership role in the creative direction of MTC’s visual identity; including concepts, creative briefs and art direction of photoshoots for associated imagery, concept and design of marketing collateral.
Creative Direction of MTC campaign imagery including conceptualising and preparing briefs for photographers and art direction on photoshoots.
Collaborate with a team of photographers, directors, hair and make up artists, actors, retouchers to produce high quality photography for use in campaigns, whilst adhering to budgets.
Design, develop and provide final artwork for MTC season advertising and collateral, including programmes, signage, print advertisements, posters, invitations, magazines and digital assets.
Collaborate with external suppliers and creative agencies as and when required.
Liaise with external suppliers such as printers and media outlets, attending press checks where necessary, ensuring the timely quality delivery of material.
Work closely and collaboratively with internal stakeholders to ensure key objectives are met, including Marketing, PR and Management.
Present concepts, briefs and visual mockups to Marketing Director as well as Artistic Director and Executive Director when needed.
Oversee and manage the workflow and job allocation within the design team – working in consultation with the Marketing Director and with the Marketing Coordinator to ensure all deadlines are met.
Pre press and print preparation of artwork for a variety printed and digital collateral.
Adhere to MTC brand guidelines, ensuring all materials reflect MTC brand and visual identity Page 2 of 4
Skills & Attributes
Key Relationships
Service the design requirements of other internal MTC departments
Ensure that MTC photography and design files are maintained and archived.
Tertiary qualifications in graphic design
Over seven years professional senior level graphic design and or art director experience
Outstanding skills and significant experience in a fast paced environment using Adobe Suite software including Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat
Ability to think creatively and create concepts from scratch under tight time constraints, with flexibility to change direction nimbly and positively
Thorough knowledge of pre-press
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
The Lead Graphic Designer leads the graphic design team (inclusive of supervising the graphic designer and freelance designers) within the Marketing Department, reports to the Marketing Director. This role also works closely with the Marketing Manager and Marketing Coordinator. Key internal departmental relationships include with the Marketing, PR, Artistic and Development Departments. Key external relationships are with printers, photographers, advertising/branding agencies amongst others. The marketing team works in partnership with the PR and Communications team, headed by the PR and Communications Director. MTC is an equal opportunity, smoke-free, family friendly employer. This position is a full-time role. Ordinary hours of work are 37.5 per week, Monday to Friday. The position is a maternity leave contract offered for a fixed term of 10 months during March-December 2015. Conditions include 4 weeks annual leave loading pro rata, statutory superannuation, an in-house subsidised canteen and complimentary theatre tickets.
