THE HISTORY OF 435 BROOME STREET
Architect William Appleton Potter was commissioned by Owner Catherine Wilkins to design a store and loft building at the site of 435 Broome Street in 1873. Potter had recently completed Princeton University’s Chancellor Green Library in the newly popular Victorian Gothic Style. Previous cast iron building in the Soho area had mimicked shapes and styles of stone buildings; utilizing Corinthian columns and broad openings. Potter used the cast iron medium to set 435 Broome Street apart from its neighbors. He established thin columns and unusual capitals in addition to a decorative frieze featuring iron sunflowers and other shapes that were popular motifs at the time. In June of 1898 435 Broome Street was sold to William Waldorf Astor for $75,000 and, by 1906, he would own the two adjacent structures; 484 and 486 Broadway. Mr. Astor leased the retail space to a series of leather handbag and travel trunk companies. The Athenaeum in Pittsfield, MA (1876) by William Appleton Potter
For the first half of the 20th Century the building housed various industrial businesses and furniture manufacturers. The 1970’s brought a wave of change to Soho; transforming the neighborhood and building into epicenters for New York’s artist’s studios and galleries. Today, 435 Broome is available to potential buyers in a variety of capacities. The building retains much of its original architectural significance, with the only major alteration being the replacement of the small, ground-level windows with larger glass plates-more favorable to a retail tenant.
