CALLING ALL MILK CARTON BOATERS: RACE RETURNS JUNE 7 Free registration opens for popular Rose Festival competition PORTLAND, ORE. – Mark your calendar, and drink your milk! After taking a year off for park renovations around the historic Westmoreland Park Casting Pond, the Milk Carton Boat Race is back by popular demand this June as a 2015 Rose Festival sanctioned event. The race supports Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger. A unique Portland tradition dating back to 1973, the race features hand-made, human powered boats that float entirely by means of recycled milk cartons and jugs. Racers young and old will compete with their creatively constructed watercraft in seven classes ranging from sleek and slim boats built for speed to the whimsical showboat class. There is even a corporate category for businesses. All compete for the coveted Best in Show milk can trophy. Online registration opened this week at www.dairyfarmersor.com, and there is no cost to enter the race. Registration will remain open until June 1 or the race is filled, whichever comes first. Before building a boat, participants are strongly encouraged to read the rules to ensure they will pass inspection on race day. The race will take place at the Westmoreland Park Casting Pond in the Sellwood Neighborhood of southeast Portland on June 7 at 11 a.m. It is free to attend; and with great food, giveaways and entertainment, it promises to be a fun event for all ages. The Royal Rosarians and Oregon Dairy Princess-Ambassadors will be on hand, and the Oregon Food Bank will accept donations of cash and canned food to support the Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger campaign. Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger is a campaign in Oregon and Washington during the month of June to raise funds, food and awareness for the increased need for food and donations during the summer, when children have less access to school breakfast and lunch programs. Donations of cash or food at the event will support the food bank and provide meals for families in need. ###
