LOCAL LEADERS KICK OFF SCHOOL WELLNESS EFFORT TO BOOST STUDENT PERFORMANCE TILLAMOOK, ORE. – Community leaders are beginning a county-wide effort to improve school wellness, based on the premise that healthy kids are better learners. The initiative begins with the Learning Connection Town Hall on May 28, from 10 to 1 p.m. at Tillamook Bay Community College.

Research shows that student academic performance is not just about the quality of what is taught in the classroom, but also the quality of the student’s food choices and movement throughout the day. Good nutrition and regular physical activity can have a powerful impact on brain development and function, attention, attendance, and overall academic performance. “This town hall event will provide a valuable opportunity for the community to consider how its students can be put in a better position to succeed,” said Nancy Kershaw, with Oregon State University Extension Service. “I expect a fruitful discussion about how healthy habits impact student success, and actionable follow up to get people involved and make a difference.”

Presentations and discussion topics will cover relevant research, success stories, identified needs within Tillamook County, and best practices for school wellness, nutrition and physical activity. Participants will be asked to join the effort by committing to school wellness with time and resources in the next school year and beyond.

Attendance is open to all interested parties, though space is limited. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required by May 22 via [email protected]. A showcase school lunch will be provided, courtesy of Sodexo.

The Learning Connection Town Hall is supported by organizations including: Oregon State University Extension Service, Tillamook County; Tillamook School District #9, Sodexo Nutrition Services -Tillamook SD#9, Food Roots, Oregon Dairy Council, Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs and Oregon Public Health Division.
