4th July 2017 Winyates News The school has been a hive of activity and progress this year. The children really have done some amazing things and had so many learning adventures. Next academic year we will see some exciting changes in staffing. Miss Lomas will be moving across to St John’s where she will be taking over the Head of School’s role, she will be greatly missed by us all, especially the children who enjoy her chirpy enthusiasm on the door in a morning. Miss Lomas has been instrumental in helping to lead the school to the good school it is now. We will also be saying goodbye to Mrs Fowler, who is moving to The Beeches school to be their Early Years Leader. She is very excited about this new challenge and the chance to be back in Reception class. Mrs Fowler has for a long time been a driver for school improvement, she has always worked so hard to make learning focussed and enjoyable. Many of our families will be sad to say goodbye to Mr Dakin who has secured an excellent new job working closer to home in an Academy that specialises in working with children who have barriers to learning. He has made such a difference to so many children and families in his time with us and we wish him all the very best. As we say goodbye, we also welcome new staff. From September we will have a new Head of School –Miss Bowles, who has been the Deputy School Leader at St Johns. Miss Bowles is really excited to be working at Winyates and brings with her a depth of knowledge. She has been teaching for 18 years and has a
real passion for reading and writing! Also joining us will be Mrs Walton as the new Year 2 Teacher. Mrs Walton is an excellent teacher who has worked at Winyates before as a sports coach and is excited to come back to us. She is currently teaching in Year 2 so is really up to date with year 2 teaching and learning. Another new addition will be Miss Marriott, who will be joining us in Year 6. Miss Marriott is at the beginning of her teaching career and is full of enthusiasm and ambition. We look forward to working with her. We will be advertising for a new Year 3 Teacher in September but in the mean time we have secured an excellent Supply teacher who the children have worked with before. Next years classes will be as follows: Reception Year 1 Year 2

Year 1 The Squirrels We are getting very excited in Year 1 this week. We are soon going to start our end-of-term mini-topic on “Minions”, and we are really looking forward t our cinema visit next week! It’s going to be a fabulous treat for the children, who have worked so hard during Year 1 to become more mature and responsible –they have truly earned a day out. As part of our Minions topic, we will be doing lots of sorting and problem-solving, learning about other cultures and writing mini-stories using parts of the films as our stimulus material. It’s gong to be a great way to end the children’s time in Year 1, and, hopefully, will boost their confidence before going up to Year 2. Year 2 The Piglets In year 2 we are sharing and enjoying a book called Beautiful Birds by J Roussen and E Walker. The pictures in the book are really stunning and the children are fascinated by all the different birds. We have already begun finding out about birds we see in the UK by using www.rspb.org.uk looking at the kids pages. Over the next couple of weeks the children will be writing descriptive poems about birds, and writing facts files. Can I say thank you to those families who have completed creative homework about birds –they are lovely and on display in the classroom! In maths we have finished our shape unit of work, where the children have developed their reasoning skills and talked in detail
and using mathematical language when comparing and describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. The children have asked to return to calculation work and fraction work for the remaining time and will be solving problems and reasoning about number for the rest of the year. Well done to Emma who was our treasure seeker this week, for her fantastic attitude to her learning and always striving to be the best she can be! Sport News Last week we had an exceptional three teams in the County School Games Finals. All of the children played brilliantly and the way that they represented our school was outstanding. Reception The elephants This week the Elephants are reading the story ‘Smiley Shark’ and learning about creatures under the sea. All of the fish were scared of smiley shark because of his sharp teeth but he is actually a really friendly kind shark and helps them out of trouble. We are relating this to moving up to Year 1 and not needing to be scared as everything will be ok and we will have great fun!! We are excited about meeting our new teacher this week and can’t wait to find out things about Year 1. We have been thinking of things to share with the new children coming in to Reception in September to help them feel less scared too.
